5 out of 5 stars Defying the odds   July 9, 2009

Defiance [Blu-ray] [2008] br /First of all, Amazon service, shipping etc., is excellent. Even the SA Post Office did their job well as I received this package in excellent condition in a maximum of 10 days. This was really great! br / br /I saw defiance on the Art Circuit in South Africa and thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, it is depressing at times, but also humorous at others. What makes it quite extraordinary is the passion with which Daniel Craig portrays the role of Tuvia. All the other actors are also playing with a similar passion and I suppose this comes from inside of each actor but also the guidance given by the director, Edward Zwick. br / br /I will most likely never understand (humanly) why the 2nd World War had the atrocities it did, as I would not understand current day atrocities in central and other parts of Africa, Middle East, etc. Movies such as Defiance though, tend to remind us that human nature can easily fall into total disarray and people can easily become as animals or barbarians. br / br /This is a must see for everyone interested in World War 2, Holocaust or Jewish History. I addition it is also excellent viewing just for the sake of an action, thriller drama with a bit of romance weaved through it. br / br /Highly recommended! br /

4 out of 5 stars A true story   September 10, 2009

A 'true story' of the Bielski brothers , group of Jewish survivors from the Nazi invasion who decided to take a chance and live in the forest. br / br /The movie skips a few unpleasant episodes of the story that perhaps were not very suitable for the main audience but success in presenting the gruelling conditions of the life in the forest in the middle of a bitter winter with hardly any supplies and surrounded by enemies. br / br /The Bielki brothers are portraited as flawed heroes, which is what makes them so real and so fascinating and adds realism to the story. br / br /The production values are excellent and the direction lets the movie down a bit but Craig , Schreiber and Jamie Bell balance that with good acting and a few good lines. br / br /4 stars

4 out of 5 stars VERY DIFFERENT BUT IT WORKS!!   October 11, 2009
Jason Thorne (England / Oxford)
I have to say I enjoyed this a great deal with a very very good performance from Daniel Craig which was so different to his Bond role. The whole film worked for me with some brillant explosive action and a very heart warmimg story which added up to 2 hours good viewing which kept me watching to the end. It is one of those films I wouldn't watch again but it is one of the better films I have watched recently. On the blu ray side of things a nice crisp picture with the scenery of the dense woods and snow looking amazing as for sound again good. This is a worthy purchase on blu ray if you are expecting a Saving Private Ryan or Black Hawk Down type war film look else where, but if you want a film with powerful performances and courage this is for you overall a impressive film.

4 out of 5 stars Beiliski Otriad   October 26, 2009

The Beiliski Brothers in this movie are Russian Jews situated in the Byelorussian forest, based on a true account set in Poland,a part that had been absorbed into Russia. They resist the Nazis who are rounding up and massacreing Jews.Running alongside them are Russian Partisans who are rivals to the same resources that the Beiliski Brothers are after, raiding partisan farms for food, demanding milk and eggs from the milkman. The Russian Partisans ask Tuvia and Zus to join up,send their best men along. The brothers lose their parents and their partners and children to the Nazis and Defiance is about the resistance movement the brothers create in a primitive battle to survive and avenge the deaths of their loved ones.Zus(Shreiber) wants revenge against the collaborators of the Germans and after a fight with his brother about their lack of mobility and inability to take on all the women and elderly men who are fleeing the ghettoes,he leaves with a band to join the partisans.Tuvia(Craig) kills Bernicki, the police captain and his two grown up sons due to their collaboration and he prefers to construct camps in the forest which have to move as the enemies close in.In the camps the men sometimes take on `forest wives'.The 3 main actors,Craig,Schreiber and Bell are very good if you forget the accents all being out of sync, that is they express the emotions of anger,fear,heart-ache,courage and passion very well. The shifting camp has more hope than food as they find out about the death of relatives from new arrivals in the bitter winter.A horse is killed and later a wolf to provide sustenance.Tuvia battles typhus and a challenge to his leadership. An elder is fond of quoting the Talmud-"If you save a life you must take responsibility for it",he also plays chess and the violin and debates philosophy with fellow intellectuals.Everybody brings whatever skills they can and pools their wealth into the community. They are pushed and harried by German bombers, troops and later tank squadrons, moving into open marshland and water up to their waist. The cinemaphotography gives a real sense of subdued light or breaking sunshine, the harsh conditions and the beauties of woodland. The film gives an opposing view of Jews that don't fight or are resigned to their fate, showing courage, resilience and an ability to stick together that is remarkable. Craigh has shown a penchant for making films with a Jewish theme,Fateless,Munich, and now Defiance br /bringing a sturdy, stoic quality and real acting skills lacking in James Bond. br / br /
