5 out of 5 stars Escape from Huang Shi   July 5, 2009

A little known aspect of the conflict between China and Japan. Very moving and very well acted.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning!   November 10, 2009
Grace Poole (Manchester, UK)
I really enjoyed this film and think it is seriously underrated. It has stunning scenery and great atmosphere. I personally think it is one of JRM's best performances in a film as he seems so relaxed and totally absorbs the character of George Hogg. It is a true story from the 1930's and gets under your skin (well it did mine anyway). If you like gung ho shoot out films with blood, gore and swearing - then this is not for you! But if you enjoy beautiful cinematography, great acting and an amazing story of human determination with a sprinkling of humour, then you will really enjoy this film. At the end, some of the children that Hogg saved (now elderly) give their own tributes to George Hogg - very touching!

4 out of 5 stars A very good film that just falls short of greatness.   September 4, 2009

I cannot put my finger on what was lacking in the film, maybe it was the writing or perhaps the lead performance, I am not certain at all. br /Johnathon Rhys Meyers is solid if not spectacular in the lead role, and the supporting cast all do a solid job, even the chinese child actors. The story is set to the backdrop of undeclared war in china. It is a warzone and the main cast are just trying to survive and excape the conflict. br / Inspired by true events, I do not know how acurate it is but what research I have done since suggests the events to be accurate if not all the characters. What George hogg does is amazing and deserves the recognition this film gives, however in someways I wonder if the film could have spent more time dealing with the 3 month trek with the children, it is a little rushed in the movie, you may believe it is just a few days until someone actually says it has been three months. I also think the ending seemed a little rushed, that said the running time would have just gone on and on. br /Well worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars An epic melodrama in the Dr Zhivago mould   August 24, 2009
Peter M (London United Kingdom)
This was not the film I expected, but in spite of that was very watchable and enjoyable. It is an epic and noble adventure story about a real-life Englishman (George Hogg), with a cast of hundreds, possibly thousands, unfolding at a traumatic time during the Japanese invasion of China in the late 1930's. In plot terms, parallels with the Dr. Zhivago story are obvious...a small number of people whose lives keep intersecting against a massive backdrop of momentous events, who somehow survive battles, bombs, firing squads etc.....there is a brave and honourable man as hero.....a love triangle....enough action to captivate most viewers' attention.... and maybe even the quality to stir the soul. But there the similarities end. The plotlines seem at times contrived, with Chow Yun Fat as a Chinese Communist patriot and Radha Mitchell as an untrained nurse seemingly invented to furnish the story with a love triangle in the same vein as Dr Zhivago (this view being supported by the historical facts about the man, George Hogg, and the people from his life!!). And whilst the mix of real and imagined events heightens the drama, it is at least to some degree at the expense of character and believability. So that it is, for example, difficult to fathom out any of Radha Mitchell's character or motivation, or for that matter why Chow Yun Fat's character joins the orphanage's epic march; Johnathan Rhys Meyer Hogg also seems quite under-written and as a result never bestrides the screen as you might expect. But these are not fatal criticisms. The film deserves to be watched, and even if it is not a five star movie, it can stand comparison with the very best.
