4 out of 5 stars Brain Dead meets Flight of the Conchords   May 27, 2009

What a great movie! I really am surprised at how much I enjoyed this. It took twenty minutes or so for me to settle into its style and humour - if you've seen New Zealand films before then you know what to expect - but once it gets going it is very funny and full of zombie slaying gore. The cast are magnificent as laid back survivors of the zombie armageddon. br / br /This film is worth watching simly because it features one of the best zombie attack moves ever: the Berserker - I hope Max Brooks is watching, as it is needs to be added as an essential technique to an updated Zombie Survival Guide. br / br /Although a low budget movie it never feels that way or suffers for it as the acting, script and effects are all superb. This is New Zealand's Shaun of the Dead.

4 out of 5 stars Innovative, Low Budget Gem   July 8, 2009

New Zealand has a fine tradition of quirky horror comedies that sarted with Peter Jackson's Bad Taste and Braindead. br / br /I saw Last of the Living at it's Day of the Undead UK premier held at Leicesters Phoenix Arts cinema. I enjoyed it then and the DVD release proves it has rewatch value. br / br /The plot centres on three guys in New Zealand surviving the zombie apocalypse by pretending everything is ok - watching DVDs, talking about girls and occasionally stepping out for supplies. Fate springs the responsibility of saving the world upon then when they meet a scientist working on a cure. br / br /This film is less about plot and more about the characters. The kiwi attitude and humour shines through and the zombie effects, whilst minimal, are well done. There are plenty of undead in-jokes to satisfy genre fans too. My only minor complaint is that the DVD lacks special features but at this price it's essential - buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Will appeal to hard core zombi fans   October 9, 2009

This is the worst sort of joke shop special effects and fans of bigger budget productions like Shane of The Dead or even B Movie productions which where all about the action gore like Evil Dead could well be disappointed. A lot of the zombis are "off set" or "elsewhere" while the tension, if you can call it that, is provided by skulking and running around avoiding them, when they make appearences its generally for slap stick, comedic value. This is why I said it would appeal to hardcore fans. However, if you can suspend disbelief long enough you could really enjoy this feature. br / br /What makes the movie great are the set pieces of interaction between the survivors, how they came together, what they think about their predicament and their personalities. There is the dumb jock who has a mad exaggerated sense of self and optimism, the "sensitive man" former accountant who is really having a good time by comparison with his former life, the mad martial arts obsessed unsigned rockstar (oh yes!!) and the scientist chick they finally meet up with (who provides a contrast in so far as she is more normal and intelligent than the band of joe averages). br / br /The movie is full of fantastic comic asides, like observations that "at least we have lived longer than anyone else" or that they have spent their time "just going from mansion to mansion, watching movies, playing games" or the more imaginative but none the less logical explanation as to why there arent any firearms around (which I stronly suspect is more to do with the movie's budget). Comparisons have been made with Flight Of The Concords and that's probably fair, thematically its pretty much about friendship, fool hardy good times, making do and working through with a laugh and I cant find fault with that. br / br /Watch out for the awesome spinning closeline "hurricane", a move that "when done properly, cant be defended against", it featured in a lot of old arcade classics in the ninties like Final Fight and Street Fighter 2, I never thought it would or could feature on screen and its done to full on comic effect.

4 out of 5 stars Good Clean Fun   July 27, 2009
Chinatown Blue (S-O-T, UK)
I'm a big fan of zombie movies so this one was an obvious winner with me from the start. Funny, gory, and extremely satisfying, this New Zealand addition to the genre is perhaps not quite as good as Shaun of the Dead, but certainly has a good stab at it. Worth a watch even if you are not a fan of the shambling dead.

1 out of 5 stars Low budget and low quality   August 11, 2009

This film is boring and not well acted. br /Zombie action is almost absent. The actors constantly run around in empty streets - no living but no zombies either. Only in some well-defined buildings and areas do they find zombies. Totally unrealistic, after a zombie apocalypse a city should be full of zombies. br /And the zombie action - well, it looks like karate exercises with golf sticks. Cheap production - in all meanings of the word. br /
