Amazon.co.uk Review
It was a long time coming, but finally the crew of the iRed Dwarf/i were reunited for what could be the last time with iBack To Earth/i. And it proved to be a bit of a mixed blessing, with the three parts of show--all of which are brought together on this DVD--throwing up moments of absolute genius, alongside parts where you couldnrsquo;t help believing that its best days are far behind it. p The idea behind the show is quite ingenious. iBack To Earth/i takes place after the supposed season ten of IRed Dwarf/I, and the crew find themselves thrown through a portal, whereupon they realise that theyrsquo;re all just characters from a TV show. Furthermore, theyrsquo;re characters from a TV show who are going to all buy it in the final episode. The only solution? To track down both the actors that play them (including a trip to the iCoronation Street/i set!), and the creators of iRed Dwarf/i itself. p This opens the door for plenty of postmodern gags and situations, but arguably itrsquo;s only when things get back onto a more comfortable iRed Dwarf/i plain do things start to gel a little more. And when it works, you canrsquo;t help but enjoy the fact that the crew are back together. p Will this be the last voyage for iRed Dwarf/i? Quite possibly, and therersquo;s little doubt that itrsquo;s far from the showrsquo;s peak. But itrsquo;s still a fun send-off for the crew, and while a little patchy, it still manages to be both funny and entertaining. Itrsquo;s also, thanks to the DVD, far better to watch it all in one advert-free block.--iJon Foster/i

5 out of 5 stars I was worried...but...   April 14, 2009

I started watching Red Dwarf when I was 9 years old, way back in 1993, and have always loved it. I was more than a little dissappointed when the show disappeared after series 8 and always hoped it would return one day. br / br /So I, like many Red Dwarf fans, worried that after 10 years the show wouldn't be able to live up to the expectations of so many over enthusiastic fans. I therefore made a point of watching Back to Earth with an open mind, trying to ignore my bias as best as I could. At first, I was worried, especially when they actually went back to earth and attempted to break down the fourth wall, but the twist and turns in the final episode made it completely worth it and harked back to the same plot devices that made series 5,6 and 7 so successful. Sure, it's different to the original 8 series (after 10 years what do you expect?) but Back to Earth showed that the boys from the Dwarf and the sparkle that made me love the show is still there. br /Some will be disappointed, but this is mainly because their expectations got carried away. Watch it with an open mind and you are sure to be pleasantly surprised. I thought it was a great comeback and I will be happy to put this addition to the series with the rest of my treasured collection. br / br /The DVD is sure to help these episodes (no ad breaks will certainly help keep the pace of the plot)and there are bound to be plenty of extras.

I for one thought that we'd seen the last episode of one on the best comedy/SF ever made. "But wait there's more!" Enjoy it for what it is. Excellent.

The day has finally arrived. The long awaited final episode of Red Dwarf has landed and every one of us who watched it did so with a rather unique trepidation. What of the verdict? Many were disappointed, it didn't live up to expectations, it was not pure comical genius through-and-through, they visited Coronation Street for Chrissakes, etc... br / br /I wish to thank all the naysayers for lowering my expectations of this tremendous episode and therefore making it such a blast when it turned out to be awesome. br / br /Where to start? The first part, indeed, is a rather poor introduction that slowly but surely puts us back in the Red Dwarf mood, that shows how the Dwarfers got into this "visiting the real world" mess. There are no particularly memorable moments in this episode, it will make you smile a couple of times, which in itself is still worth the whie, but that's about it. br / br /But from the second episode on, it's lighthearted-yet-oh-so-subtly-deformed cliche after another. The Dwarfers' trip to the "real world" is perfectly paced, the twists keep coming up, and the ridiculous exaggerations kitch shots never let down. It never fails to delight. br / br /What of the story? What of the final twist? From my perspective, it was dumb, it was bold, it was fitting, it was ambitious, and it was delightful. Indeed, as the end credits rolled, I found myself clapping. What more can you say? br / br /Just buy it and enjoy the ride. The good-old typical Dwarf humour may be gone, but there are more than enough references to the old series, and enough new-yet-oh-so-dwarfish turns to make it more than worth your while. br / br /A word of warning : if you have not seen or do not like Blade Runner, forget Back to Earth altogether.

5 out of 5 stars REFLECT !!!   April 13, 2009

As a dyslexic Dwarfer I am mildly peeved at some of the negative response to this production! br / br /I remember my first Red Dwarf experience; 1988, Ascot, my sister was baby sitting me and we stayed up later than usual, Stasis Leak! I was hooked! Red Dwarf was the first TV series I bought on VHS and I have read all the books. NOW, I think this is where we need some retrospective. br / br /Dwarf has evolved and changed much over its run; series 3 (Kryten permanent addition, Starbug, the look), series 5 (dark edged, monster of the week), series 6 (starbug), series 7 (one camera, no studio audience), series 8 (back to roots with a twist). THUS, the show is not static, change has been an essential ingredient! br / br /TODAY, back to earth was an odd mini-series, I kept an open mind through-out and maintained patience till the end to formulate an opinion. I immensely enjoyed the show - people it is ONLY a show - and felt the twist was great fun! Back to Earth is definitely in the vein of the novels - sci-fi intellect - and I loved the atmospheric near cinematic ambience at times; Cats entrance from above, the memorial garden look, the diving belt scene, the Blade Runner homage and the well crafted empathy us the audience have towards Lister and his realisation he is ready to mature further as a human, that he can challenge himself. br / br /SO, in short, a great effort, entertaining, well performed by all the boys, looked brilliant and highly promising to what can be achieved with a continuation of the series. Continuity errors aside - Red Dwarf is riddled with them, purposely I am sure to play on the hardcore Sci-Fi community - and as back to earth was an oddity for numerous reasons, I do not miss the audience feed play with the cast, BUT they should be returned for as much as possible IF a new series is commissioned, that is my only advice to Doug! br / br /Well done boyz!, and OH, Danny, loved your diving outfit with the Calypso finish, Aaawwww, yeeaahhh!!! " How am I looking?!... Dangerous!"

Loved it,Loved it, Loved it!! br /I cant believe all the Negative comments!! Back to Earth really doesn't deserve half of them. And the comment on Craig Charles not being a good serious actor.....well..... br /Anyhoo I loved this mini series, yes it had moments of the past in it and it doesn't start off telling what happened after series 8 BUT so WHAT! Its funny! br /If they were to do a new full series (and god please do!!) then I would expect them to take it up from series 8. It is dissapointing, (but not disastrous!), that the live audience is missing. The jokes are just hilarious and Craig reading the book to the memorial, was touching. (did you notice Mel Bibby next to Kochanski??) br /Oh yeah.....OMG Danny John Jules in the pink/purple skin suit, the man has no shame!!!! (joke!) br /My 10yr old son now wants a carbug! br /Thanks Guys for bringing this back. And thanks to Dave for showing it when the BBC wouldn't. Now.... Series 9 please??!!!!
