Not infinite... but just right! June 29, 2009 L. Felthouse (Derbyshire, UK) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this film. It's not quite a chick-flick, and yet it doesn't really fall into the American Pie/Superbad field of comedy, either.

br /Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is about a group of young people who have a crazy night out. Nick (played by Superbad and Juno star Michael Cera) and his band are playing a gig at a club, but Nick is distraught when he sees his ex-girlfriend in the crowd. The ex-girlfriend who recently dumped him, has completely ignored him ever since and is also there with a new guy. However, things may be looking up for Nick as he catches the eye of another girl who's in the audience, checking him out. Later, in an attempt to save face in front of her bitchy classmate, the girl, Norah (Kat Dennings, of The 40 Year Old Virgin and The House Bunny), asks Nick to pretend to be her boyfriend for five minutes, and kisses him. Trouble is, the bitchy classmate is Tris, Nick's ex. Tris' nose is immediately put out of joint because although she's finished with Nick, she doesn't want anyone else, much less her rival Norah, to have him.

br /The evening slowly descends into madness as Norah's best friend, Caroline, goes missing. Nick, Norah and Nick's gay bandmates all set out to find her, whilst at the same time seeking information on a secret gig which is taking place. The hottest band ever is playing a gig on the night in question, but they won't say where. Thrown together by circumstances, Nick and Norah discover a love for the same music and try to ignore the growing attraction between them. Eventually, it becomes impossible to ignore. But as Tris is on the rampage and Norah's ex won't leave her alone, things are complicated. The young couple must make some tough decisions, and soon.

br /Overall, I really enjoyed this film. It really does defy classification. It's funny, and has an underlying love story, but I wouldn't say its overly soppy. It's fun, crazy and easy to watch. I found myself really liking the characters and rooting for them. The perfect film for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Based on the novel of the same name by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, this film tells the story of one night in New York's indie music scene as Nick and Nora meet by chance while hunting for a mysterious secret gig.
br /
br /It's difficult to categorize this film as it doesn't really fit into any of the pre-defined conventions. It's part love story and part adventure with some comedy thrown in. This all adds up to a very enjoyable film to watch that will stay with you for quite some time aftwewards.
"...Friends With Benefits..." October 10, 2009 Mark Barry at Revival Records, West End (London, UK) All cool movies have a secret weapon - and in "Nick Norah's Infinite Playlist" - it's KAT DENNINGS.
br /
br /Not since Emily Blunt in "The Jane Austen Book Club" have I seen an actress so utterly gobsmacking in every way - a young woman who is just going to be the hugest star.
br /
br /Possessed of a main of flowing red hair, Dennings is extraordinarily voluptuous - her chest is likely to make most men take a dip in the Volga to cool down - and even that won't work - her lips are so succulent that it may be detrimental to your heart rhythms to write about them let alone actually experience them - and don't get me started on her eyes - as vast and as deep and as beautiful as Natasha McElhone - one of the classiest actresses in the entire world.
br /
br /But none of this would matter if there wasn't that 'X' factor about Dennings that so many of the other wannabes don't have - Kat is the kind of actress the camera adores. And on top of this, she engenders genuine affection in her audience - men will fall hopelessly in love with her, while women will want to be her best buddy and pal. It's very, very rare - it really is - and this young Canadian has it all in spades.

br /"Nick Norah's Infinite Playlist" is a 2009 teen romcom adapted by LORENE SCAFARIA from the hip novel by RACHEL COHN and is directed by PETER SOLLETT who had an Indie hit a few years back with "Raising Victor Vargas".
br /
br /Another breakthrough performance is that of Norah's permanently inebriated girlfriend Caroline brilliantly played by ARI GRAYNOR - she's a blast as the ditzy blonde - very funny and very likeable (there's a scene in a toilet involving puke, a mobile phone and chewing gum that will test your wince factor to the max and make you laugh out loud).
br /
br /The fantastically evocative early hours New York locations are peppered with the usual Indie soundtrack (the camerawork shines here) - while Noah's three friends are an assortment of varying nutjobs in a gay band called "The Jerkoffs". They drive around in their van all night arguing about their name and will abandon anyone and anything to find out the venue for a secret gig by 'the' band of the moment who are called "Where's Fluff?" (there 's rabbit logos all through the credits and movie).
br /
br /MICHAEL CERA plays Nick (he seems to have cornered the market in dweeb guys), who is broken-hearted about his break-up with the feckless Tris (ALEXIS DZIENA) until he chances on Norah in a nightclub (KAT DENNINGS). His performance is essentially the same as Juno, and while he's very good at it, it does stretch credibility a tad that babes like Norah and Tris would fancy him at all, let alone sleep with him. That aside - there is a genuine, lovely and undeniable chemistry between Cera and Dennings that carries the whole movie and keeps you watching and hoping to the end that they'll make it... (no prizes for guessing what happens there).
br /
br /"Nick Norah's Infinite Playlist" is young, alive, hopeful and warm - and in a way that so many gross-out comedies fail to be nowadays. It'll wheedle its way into your heart, it really will.
br /
br /I liked it a lot...and if you're looking for a nice night in - then look no further.

Dissapointing August 29, 2009 Mr. Martyn R. Yates (Wales, UK) This film doesn't really go anywhere and it's just about a bunch of friends going around New york at night. Michael Cera was great as always but this was his weakest film to date imo. There were some amusing bits, ranging from mostly quite funny and only one being really funny. I found the whole love interest thing boring and not convincing [apart from Cera who is convincing but the girl he falls in love with isn't convincing]. I just felt like i was watching another film as michael's in it and it's really like going around a round-about, it's distinctly average.
br /
br /Overall: 3 stars [5/10]
br /Nothing amazing or memborable. Juno and Superbad are a lot better than this put together. Average movie overall.
