A visual and emotional masterpiece August 14, 2009 J. Young (LDN) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As someone who works in a rental store I am regularly subjected to people's opinions of films, and recently this one has been the top whinging point. The general complaints are that it's slow and hard to get through, and that the story line is confusing and cluttered.
br /I however disagree enormously! It's true that the first half of this film is structured in such a way that it does make it a little difficult to follow and figure out, however do you really think this is an accident? It's built like this to keep you hooked and guessing and when the point comes in the film where everything clicks it's exciting!
br /The story follows a troubled man, Ben Thomas (Played by Will Smith in possibly his greatest role yet) an IRS officer. From the beginning of this film you are left guessing what kind of a person he is, it starts with him abusing a bling man over the phone, but then being aparently disgusted by his behaviour. We then follow him as he does huge favours for aparently random people in need.
br /As the story evolves we come to realise, through flashbacks, that Ben was involved in a car accident and feels responsible for the seven deaths it resulted in, and you twig pretty soon that this is why he feels the need to better seven strangers' lives.
br /Complicating his plans however, Ben falls in love with one of the strangers, Emily (Played by Rosario Dawson) a young woman with a heart condition that without a transplant doesn't give her long to live.
br /He's left with the decision to stay and love her, but change his plans, or help her an alter their future together hugely.
br /This is a beautiful but heartbreaking film, which has stayed with me for days.
Don't ask... Just watch... May 27, 2009 Lizi 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
Every now and then a film comes along that just needs to be watched. Press reviews, details and synopses do not add to the experience. They can, in fact, take away from it. Seven Pounds is one such film.
br /
br /I watched this with as little prior knowledge as possible. When I first heard of it, I got the sense that it was the sort of film that would work best if one just lets the story unfold. So I went out of my way to avoid finding out any more.
br /
br /I bought the DVD and I just watched. The story gradually emerges - you have to give it time - it moves backwards and forwards and you just have to just let the pieces fall into place. The film itself is not just an intriguing story. It is also beautifully constructed.
br /
br /I won't talk of the plot, but I will say this. There is sadness in this film. And darkness. Do not watch this and expect no emotional response. It may be a difficult journey. But it is worth it. I can't guarantee how you'll feel at the end, but it will have had a real impact. And there is light as well as dark - you just have to know where to find look - and you may not see it straight away.
br /
br /If you are intrigued enough to be looking into purchasing this, then stop searching for answers and just take the plunge and watch it. I really was glad not to have found out too much about the film prior to watching - I feel I got so much more from the experience as a result.

Absolutely amazing May 4, 2009 Abby 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Seven Pounds is a brilliant film. The cinematography was breathtaking and the acting was flawless. I cried, lots.

br /I left the cinema feeling like I wanted to be a better person - which can only be a good thing.
br /
br /I highly, highly recommend this film. A DEFINITE must-see movie.
A beautiful movie misguidedly dogged by negative reviews May 17, 2009 Winston (UK) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I will keep this brief as the only reason I am writing this review is to challenge the negative reviews posted against Seven Pounds! I can see why people have slated this film as it makes you feel emotionally drained afterwards. I notice that it has been described as morally bankrupt for glamorising the ultimate sacrifice. I feel this is unfounded and wonder if peoples opinion would be the same if this were released as a novel. Also i find myself suspicious that some peoples reviews are result of emotional backlash and not of a more genuine critisism.
br /
br /In conclusion this is a staggeringly beautiful and compassionate tale rendered tastefully and in my opinion without Hollywood glamourisation.
br /
br /Miss it - miss out!

Another brilliant Will Smith movie .. June 16, 2009 Sarah Nagy (West Sussex, England) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I missed this film in the cinema but my friend told me it was a must see. I have always been a massive Will Smith fan and have loved all his movies, and this is no different. A little confusing to start with, but its one of those films where you're like 'oh yeahh' at the end!! Made me cry at the end so be ready with the tissues!
