Amazon.co.uk Review
When a dog wriggles his adorable rear end into a human's life, the human will never be the same. And both Marley, the dog, and iMarley Me/i, the movie, manage to endear themselves deeply despite a few wee flaws. Readers of the John Grogan bestseller already know the raffish charm of the incorrigible yellow lab puppy, Marley, adopted by Grogan and his wife because she's "never seen anything more adorable in my life." But Grogan's simple tale of love, in all its forms, shines on the big screen, thanks to deft comic turns by Jennifer Aniston--in top form here--and Owen Wilson. Their chemistry is utterly natural and believable as Marley's owners, as is their interaction with the very naughty but ultimately irresistible Marley. As Marley grows up, the film follows his escapades--flunking out, spectacularly, from puppy training at the hands of a wickedly funny Kathleen Turner. And as Marley grows up, John and Jenny build their life together and weather some tough emotional blows. Like iMy Dog Skip/i, which it resembles in its affection for its subject, iMarley Me/i is a tear-jerker, but in the sweetest, most lovely way--because it, and its four-legged star, have wriggled into our hearts. Good boy. i--A.T. 5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming but sad...   March 14, 2009

The first time i saw the advert for 'Marley And Me' was in the previews of another film - and it didn't show much about it at all. br /I entered unsure but i am so glad i saw it. This probably sounds soppy, but i don't think i have ever cried so much in a cinema before. br / br /The story of John Grogan, his wife Jenny and their dog Marley is heartwarming, sweet and will really get the tears flowing. They experience the ways of life, ups and downs, plus 3 kids along the way. Marley is incredibly micheavous and crazy, he doesn't listen to anybody and does not pay attention, but that is how you end up loving so much. br /It has quite a few funny moments, but still a mixture of drama, comedy and tragedy. br / br /Don't let the other reviews be put off by this movie - Its a real family film and trust when i say every man, woman and child will have a tear their eye by the end. br / br /A word of advice - get the tissues ready :)

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, but also poignant.   June 20, 2009

I purposely didn't go to see this at the cinema, because having read the book, I knew I'd cry like a baby. And I was right. Don't get me wrong, most of the way through Marley and Me I was giggling like a lunatic, but the ending is really sad. br / br /The story begins with newlyweds John and Jenny. Wanting to start a family, but worried how they'll cope, John takes Jenny on a surprise trip... to buy a puppy. The pair adopt Marley, a cute labrador pup. They clearly have no idea how much energy these kinds of dogs have - and it appears Marley has more than most. Soon, Marley has chewed tables, sofas, dry wall and much more, and even been thrown out of obedience school. John and Jenny have the world's worst dog on their hands. br / br /Despite being naughty, Marley is also very lovable and protective of his family, which also extends to the children when they come along. He is firmly a part of the family and sees them through good times and bad. The film is basically the story of his life. br / br /The DVD also includes some great special features, including; a feature where the producers find and train the dogs used in the film, information on adopting dogs (actually a great idea for children, as it emphasises how important it is to do some research before getting a pet), deleted scenes and a gag reel. br / br /Overall this film is mainly hilarious with some poignant and sad parts. Basically, if you love animals, and in particular dogs, you will enjoy this film.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it   March 18, 2009

I saw this a few months ago, and have been itching to review it ever since as it was so lovely. br / br /It tells the story of columnist John Grogan (played by Owen Wilson) and his wife Jenny, played by Jennifer Aniston. Marley is the darling wee labrador puppy Jenny is given for her birthday during the first year of their marriage. However it's John that really bonds with the dog. br / br /From day one, Marley is a nightmare in the most magical and wonderful of ways... and I think you need to be a dog-lover to appreciate this film fully. If you've ever owned a dog with some of the same characteristics as Marley, it'll touch you all the more. br / br /You wouldn't think a film about a man and his dog would be terribly interesting. There are no car/bus/plane chases, or cunning twists, nor gory deaths or CGI monsters - and movies without at least 2 of those features don't often get made these days. But we spend 15 years with this family; careers develop, they move home and state, they have Grogan-babies and go through marriage difficulties and the anchor the entire way through is lovely, chaotic Marley. br / br /It's inconceivable to me that this could be given one star... surely that ought to be reserved for the very most inexcusable of filmic detritus? But I suppose if we all liked the same stuff the world would be a dreadfully dull place to be. I thought Marley and Me was warm, gentle, wonderfully acted, beautifully filmed and emotionally engaging. And a single scene with Kathleen Turner made me laugh perhaps harder than I ever have in my entire life... I actually saw stars. If for no other reason, it's worth a watch simply for that one *perfectly* timed moment. br / br /Loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Comedy?   April 13, 2009

br /I saw this movie with a friend of mine (girl's night out which consists of romantic comedies and pizza) thinking we were going to see a comedy. I really liked the movie but I didn't expect it to be like this. All previews about this movie pointed towards a very funny movie. I don't think it was the case. I mean, there are very funny moments involving marley and I did laugh quite a lot but... I cried too. br / br /I would not recommend this movie for little children. I think it would result a little hard on them. br / br /If you're looking for a romantic comedy... you will get the romance and you will get comedy but you'll also get sadness...lots of it! Buyers be aware :) br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Love and life with the world's worst dog...   April 9, 2009

MARLEY AND ME is the film adaptation of the book by John Grogan. The book was written as a memoir of Grogan's life with his new wife, Jen, at the beginning of their marriage. Before jumping into the next step of having a family, John and Jen decide to buy a puppy. Marley, a labrador, is the one they decide on. Cute and cuddly when little, they fail to anticipate just how difficult he will be - he hates thunder storms, and, like a sheep, will eat anything in sight. The book, and the film, follows the story of the Grogans and their life with 'the worst dog in the world'. br / br /Comparing films to the books they are based on is always slightly unfair because of the obvious necessity to make changes, leave elements out or add to certain aspects of the story to translate it from words into images. However, I feel that MARLEY AND ME has succeeded quite well. There is less attention given to the years of Marley as a puppy, partly because of time, but the essence of Marley is definitely there. As I watched this film, I constantly thought about the labrador I had whilst I was growing up - there were so many things I could relate to and empathise with, especially the ending. br / br /This is a really heart-warming film. It will have you laughing out loud, cringing in embarrassment as Marley gets upto his various antics, and crying into your sleeve or tissue as it nears the end. br /As Grogan touches on, dogs don't care if you are rich or poor, attractive or ugly, extrovert or introvert; give a dog your heart and he will give you his. Dogs never lie about love, and their love is unconditional. For anyone who has either had the pleasure of experiencing that love, or would like to, this film is a must for them. Just remember those tissues!
