After All These Years Finally Prince Albert gets the Respect He Deserves June 24, 2009 Craig of London (UK) 30 out of 32 found this review helpful
I worked at The Victoria and Albert Museum for two and a half years. After realising Prince Alberts contribution to the V+A and to society as a whole.I learned to love and respect that wonderful man.Studying the books written about Prince Albert in the museum library I realised that for many years after his dealh historians were not kind to him.
br /The V+A gallery dedicated to Prince Albert's legacy was removed after Queen Victoria's death. The 1997 Museum director even wanted to change the name of the museum!
br /For many years I have thought when would modern society realise the genius and humanity of Prince Albert. This film had a lot of territory to cover to so, you have to read in between the lines sometimes. But the film undoughtedly shows the deep love and dedication that Prince Albert had for Queen Victoria and the deep ,deep heart that Prince Albert had for all of humanity.
br /You must see the DVD!!!Buy it and show it to everyone and the world will be a better place.
Brilliant - a great movie August 5, 2009 Klaus van Amelrode 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was hestiating buying this movie as lots of criticism was heaped on this movie. Hoestely I can not understand why. I loved it and think it was a great movie. It captured the true story, showed Victoria not as the "constant widow and awe-inspiring matriach of later days but as a young and inexperienced sovereign who committed quite seroius errors and had to grew into her role. The essence of the love between her and Prince Albert was captured too: two very lonely people were thrown together and found true happiness. And a Queen who enjoyed sex - yes she did... so very "un-Victorian", isn' t it? And a Queen who did not want children that quickly...
br /
br /Of course there are certain aspects which were not true: Prince Albert was not shot at when trying to save his wife's life and the role of King Leopold was a bit different. Yes, he wanted to see his niece marry his nephew, but he was much more to Victoria. He was the father she never had and even supported her and her mother financially. But we should remember that a movie is not a histroy book and certain allowances have to be made for drama. But it did not change the overall impression. For me it was more sad that this movie could not have been turned in the historically correct locations. I like the cast, espcially Emily Blunt. All in all we had an very enjoyable evening with this movie.

Focusing on Lord Melbourne's role July 16, 2009 T. Min (Glasgow) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I felt that the movie itself was brilliant when it showed in the cinemas. The events during the early years of Victoria was condensed very well, and the the pacing quite good for a costume drama. In stead of zooming in primarily on a young girl's emotions, we also see the the numerous other key players in the fight to control her. It is more than a single young woman's struggle. It is also a whirlpool of so many other political interests and manipulation.
br /I found Paul Bettany's performance brilliant (no matter what history says Lord Melbourne's age REALLY was lol). Wonderfully charming at times, unbreakably calm at others. He may have came to the young queen with ambition in mind at the beginning, but he definitely also grew to care for her as friend. Maybe even a surrogate daughter.
br /On the DVD itself, the extras are definitely wonderful: a short making of, some looks into the costumes... The deleted scenes were understandly cut to keep the tighter pacing, but are gems themselves: there are scenes after the King's birthday, extended versions of Melbourne's confrontation with Duchess of Kent and John Conroy, extended versions of Melbourne's talk with the King, several dealing with Lady Flora's exile from the court and some dealing with the awkward fumbling of the actual coronation.
br /Definitely worth a purchase, even for people who have seen the movie in the theatres already.
Brilliant! July 20, 2009 Jasmine Morris (England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is such a heart warming film that left me completely in love with Albert! I Thorougly recommend it to anybody who just wants to watch a film where two people simply fall in love and get married. A really great film.
A new entry to my favourites list! July 23, 2009 L. Felthouse (Derbyshire, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The film deals with Victoria's childhood, and how she was always wrapped in cotton wool by her mother and her control-freak advisor Sir John Conroy. However, as the King became older, the princess' mother, the Duchess of Kent and Conroy became worried that if the King passed away before Victoria came of age, the Crown would be passed to the next in line. Therefore, they tried to make Victoria sign a paper which would pass the power over to The Duchess of Kent. Naturally, Victoria wasn't keen on this idea, knowing that the devious pair didn't actually want to serve the people, they just wanted power and riches. So Victoria refused, even under a great deal of pressure.
br /
br /Finally, her determination wins out. The King passes away when Victoria is of age, and she admits she is young and inexperienced, but simply wants to serve her country the best she can. She feels very lonely, but relies heavily on the Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne to guide her. She has also struck up a friendship with Prince Albert, whom she feels understands her plight.
br /
br /Victoria struggles with her power and loneliness, but finally her pride cracks and she allows Prince Albert to get closer to her and they eventually admit their feelings and become engaged. Their story really is beautiful. They're far from your typical young couple, but they have a great deal of passion for one another and their beliefs and together make a formidable team. I was cheering them on throughout.
br /
br /I just felt the whole film had a great deal of passion. Emily Blunt was believable as the strong, level-headed Victoria, and Rupert Friend was delightful. Though it dealt with serious, and true, topics, the film still had a sense of fun and had me interested from beginning to end. No stiff upper lip in this film. If you love history and costume dramas, you'll love this. It's entered my list of favourite films and think it will stay there for a long time to come.
