5 out of 5 stars Refreshing new adventure for the Doctor and his new friend   May 21, 2009

I approached this 'special' episode with trepidation because I hadn't been too keen on the last one, and felt that the sense of character continuity and chemistry the Doctor had built up in the last full series of Doctor Who had been lost. However the bond between the Doctor and his one-off companion Lady Christina (played so saucily by Michelle Ryan) is very swiftly established and keeps going throughout the story. br / br /The story rattles along at a fair pace, the Doctor making us laugh while staying serious, and entertaining us throughout. The plot is clearly a rip-off of an old James Stewart film, Flight Of The Phoenix, and principal writer Russell T. Davies admitted this, however at least it was a good idea he copied, and the story fits the new, slightly lonely Doctor well. Tennant's portrayal is up to his usual standards, and there is a small ensemble of supporting actors to move the drama a long. br / br /The alien races encountered here are not very original (insect-people and flying manta rays), as is often the case they are just adapted from animals we already know (like so many in the last four years). However this doesn't detract from the drama of the story; the bad aliens are very well-realised by computer graphic effects and the sheer speed at which they move makes them frightening. The good aliens are also brought to screen believably, and made me feel like we were dealing with real alien people, rather than just a 'monster'. br / br /Supporting all this back on earth are UNIT, a reassuring presence in the form of Captain Magambo, and her dead-pan practical nature are a welcome foik for Lee Evans's manic scientist Malcolm. br / br /Framing all of this is the brilliant cinematography. The sight of the Doctor and Christina strolling out on miles and miles of untrodden sand will long live in my memory, as much as the images of the London bus stranded in the desert. br / br /I recommend this to anyone who enjoys Doctor Who, it's a good one!

I was a bit unsure about his episode, I saw the advert and was a bit confused buy it, but everything made sense int the end and it turned it to be a thrilling episode! br /A unusual woman is stealing an expensive item for a museum, she escaped but there were police after her. So to escape she takes a big red bus, which the doctor is also on. With police chasing the bus they went into a tunnel... and from then on mayhem unravelled. I will not give anything away for people who have not seen it. br /But I have to say to everyone, this episode was thrilling. It had an alien planet (even though it may not seem like it), it had the girl with the doctor, it had comedy with Lee Evans, and obviously something that completes Doctor Who... death! There was also a rather gruesome death when a man becomes a skeleton, which may earn this DVD a 12 certificate! br /But overall this was a great episode, worth the wait and I am very excited to the next special which is previewed at the end of the epsiode!

5 out of 5 stars so they haven't run out of good ideas yet!!!   April 13, 2009

i waited ages for this to go onto our tv screens, and i wasn't dissapointed at all!!! as usual the effects, costumes and music were brilliant, and the sgi on the flying stingray things was so cool! now i just can't wait for the dvd to come out-i'm saving up already, it's so good. everyone will like this dvd, but they could have expanded a bit on a bus that crashes into another planet gets attacked by stingray thingys and then flies home like mary poppins-but i still think it is one of the best doctor who shows yet. br /i just hope that matt smith can live up to david tennants standard!

5 out of 5 stars Why not review the actual product   April 7, 2009

So, Planet of the Dead's not coming out on Blue Ray just yet. Big deal. Does that justify a one star rating for the DVD release? Nah. Can anyone review a TV show before they've seen it? Nah. Should we take W. Beckett's review seriously? Nah.

after a shoddy special last year we finally get the fun and exciting momentum back as if it never went away. br /series 4 did this perfectly with the balance of action, adventure and scares and all 13 episodes were amazing Tennant and Tate make amazing television 9i want Donna Noble to return please!!). br /here Russel gives us fans a treat this Easter time by presenting us with one of the most entertaining pieces of television ever. br /the landscape is visually stunning and creates a sense of unease much like The Hills Have Eyes or The Descent. br /Lady Christina is excellently portrayed by Michelle Ryan and made a great and different companion for this episode(she may return ??)and may i just say her introduction as a companion was one of the best with pure sci-fi spy-fi style as she steals an artifact in pure Alias style. br /David is just stunning here, he makes references to the amazing Donna Noble, Midnight and the classic Robot episode while also appears less tired than he was in The next Doctor he still proves himself as the best doctor yet. br /the direction here is slick so that even if you don't have hi-def telly you are awe inspired anyways. br /the cast added to the tension with Carmen providing the most scariest of lines and the quot for the remainder of Tennant's run 'he knocks four times'!!. br /the swarm are some of the most detailed aliens ever created for the show both a spectacle to see as the swoop visciously through the sandy air and wreck havoc on the planet. br /yes this is not the most perfect episode but it is definately the most fun it could be with the excellent Lee Evans as Malcolm providing visual gags as well as some entertaining one liners and of course the flying 'mighty 200' bus. br /this was a great 60 minutes and paves the way for darker episodes ahead as we anticipate the thrillingly titled 2nd special Waters of Wars . br /overall excellent 9/10
