Amazon.co.uk Review Wolverine, fan favourite of the X-Men universe in both comic books and film, gets his own movie vehicle with iX-Men Origins: Wolverine/i, a tale that reaches way, way back into the hairy mutant's story. Somewhere in the wilds of northwest Canada in the early 1800s, two boys grow up amid violence: half-brothers with very special powers. Eventually they will become the near-indestructible warriors (and victims of a super-secret government program) known as Wolverine and Sabretooth, played respectively by Hugh Jackman (returning to his role) and Liev Schreiber (new to the scene). It helps enormously to have Schreiber, an actor of brawny skills, as the showiest villain; the guy can put genuine menace into a vocal inflection or a shift of the eyes. Danny Huston is the sinister government operative whose experiments keep pulling Wolverine back in, Lynn Collins is the woman who shares a peaceful Canadian co-existence with our hero when he tries to drop out of the program, and Ryan Reynolds adds needed humour, at least for a while. p/pThe fast-paced early reels give an entertaining kick-off to the Wolverine saga, only to slow down when a proper plot must be put together--but isn't that perpetually the problem with origin stories? And despite a cool setting, the grand finale is a little hemmed in by certain plot essentials that must be in place for the sequels, which may be why characters do nonsensical things. So, this one is fun while it lasts, if you're not looking for a masterpiece, or an explanation for Wolverine's facial grooming. i--Robert Horton, Amazon.com/i p/p span class="h1"strongStills from emX-Men Origins: Wolverine/em (Click for larger image)/strong/span table border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="4" width="100%" p/p p/p tbody tr align="center" valign="top" tdimg src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-dvd/fox/Wolverine2-small.jpg" / /td p/p tdimg src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-dvd/fox/Wolverine1-small.jpg" / /td tdimg src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-dvd/fox/Wolverine4-small.jpg" / br //td p/p /tr tr align="center" valign="top" tdimg src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-dvd/fox/Wolverine5-small.jpg" //td p/p tdimg height="200" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-dvd/fox/Wolverine3-small.jpg" width="300" //td br / p/p /tr /tbody /table /p /div /div

"You wanted the animal General, you got him." April 29, 2009 TK-1308 9 out of 16 found this review helpful
At last the movie X-Men fans have been dying to see has finally hit the big screen - and it was worth waiting for.
br /Wolverine's history is one of the most complex of the entire X-Men family and was shrouded in mystery for years with various exploits coming up in the comic series until the final comic mini series epic 'Origin' which started in November 2001.
br /Condensing most of those early years stories into the first 15 minutes of the film you get a brief outline of the events that shaped Logan in his formative years, the Civil War, WW1 and WW2, Vietnam, the list goes on. Through all these events he is accompanied by his 'brother' Victor Creed.
br /The film then covers the formation of the Team X Project and features some well known faces from the marvel universe that will have X-Fans smiling including Deadpool and Blob. The team, run by William Stryker, engage in a dangerous mission and when things go awry and the General goes too far to secure what he wants, Logan walks out on them and the team fractures in the wake of the mission.
br /The rest of the film moves up to more recent days (about 10 years or so before events of the first X-Men movie) with Logan and Kayla living in Canada. When Stryker tells Logan that someone is killing the members of Team X and that he is in danger, Logan says that he can take care of himself.
br /This sets a chain of events in motion that leads our favourite X-Man on an adventure fuelled by rage and adrenaline as he seeks to confront the man who murdered his wife and his revenge leads him back to Stryker who promises to help him and that 'he will endure more pain than any human being but he will get his revenge'.
br /When the creation of Weapon X goes wrong and Logan begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together, this leads him to New Orleans to find some old allies and a young man named Remy LeBeau to help him bring his enemies down.
br /This movie is everything that X-Men 3 should've been is every way. The direction, scope, music and balance of action / drama make this a great and highly enjoyable film.
br /Hugh Jackman once again excels as Wolverine and Victor Creed is a brilliant counterfoil to Logan and played with such animal zeal by Liev Shrieber who described the role as his 'most monstrous to date'.
br /Gambit finally makes his appearance in the X-universe (about time too!) and there are a host of others like Bolt, Blob, Deadpool, Zero, Silverfox, Wraith and a few cameo roles of younger mutants like Cyclops, Emma Frost and Banshee. A scene with a young Storm was filmed but cut from the final picture but hopefully this will be included in the deleted scenes.
br /I was disappointed that Maverick was not in the film and the scene with a certain character in the final moments was either appalling CGI or tremendously bad make up and stuck out like a broken bone blade!
br /Don't forget to play the film all the way to the end as there is a scene with Stryker in the end credits and another with Logan at the very end.
br /A great entry in the X-Men cinema canon and look out for X-Men Origins: Magneto coming out in a year's time.

Hugh Jackman reprises his role as the steel-clawed vest wearing mutant from the X-Men comics and film franchise. Unlike the X-Men films, this movie explores Wolverine's famed berserker rage; telling his back-story and his origins. Live Schreiber, fresh from playing Daniel Craig's brother in Jewish wartime resistance flick `Defiance', plays Sabretooth; Wolverine's nemesis and half-brother. How the two moved from being siblings to bitter rivals - through their involvement in the nefarious `Weapon X' programme - is one of the main plot strands in this film, and Schreiber's character is very much representative of the dark side of Wolverine's nature.
br /
br /With a love interest in the appealing form of Inuit Indian mutant `Kayla Silverfox'; Black Eyed Peas supremo Will I Am playing teleporting Texan `John Wraith'; the intriguingly named unknown Canadian actor Taylor Kitsch as Cajun mutant and `kinetic manipulator' Gambit'; and relative veteran Danny Huston as the sinister `William Stryker' - the man behind the Weapons X programme - there is plenty of acting talent on show; ex-Hobbit Dominic Monaghan, fresh from his watery exit from TV series Lost even makes an appearance; is this guy ubiquitous or what?
br /
br /Overall this is an explosive and highly entertaining take on the comic book mutant and where he came from; fanboys will doubtless be howling 'foul', due to inconsitencies between the movie and the source material; however as someone who found the X-Men movie series had definitely run out of steam by the third installment, I found Wolverine to be a refreshing change. Hopefully, this tantalisingly subtitled `X-Men Origins' movie is the first in a series; I'm rooting for `Nightcrawler' to be given the treatment next.
