5 out of 5 stars Make your Own Mind Up!!!!!!!   September 10, 2009

This is a modern cinema great for sure, and the absolute pinnacle of director Ridley Scott's career. This is a monumental release on Blu Ray given the film's popularity - and having just watched it (for the umpteenth time, but the first time on Blu Ray); I cannot for the life of me grasp where all the negativity comes from in terms of the transfer quality. I'm admittedly not an expert on the finer technical details of picture quality and video transfers - and let's be fair here, few who buy this will be either. That said though, to my eyes at least GLADIATOR looks fantastic on Blu Ray - and those who are in any doubt should make up their own minds. I too was a touch wary having read some of the reviews, and perhaps to the trained eye there may be deficiencies in the picture... but I for one just don't get where all the whining surrounding this release comes from. I've seen some Blu Ray's I have been disappointed with - this ain't one of them though; in fact, I'm completely satisfied with it. Great movie. Great looking. And a vast, significant improvement over the previous DVD releases!!!

Just finished watching this film and it looks amazing. Have people got nothing to do with their lives than pick up on the smallist detail. Missing bloody spears/arrows? These are the same people who moaned about the gas canister on show used to flip the chariot when the film was originaly relleased! These slight detailes can only be seen when you know what you are looking for and watch the film frame by frame. For this reason alone i didnt see any missing picture as i was blown away by the picture quality and sound. (i notice nobody has comented on the sound, but then again you cant hear anything if watching frame by frame) br /If you are a normal film fan and want to see an absolute classic in all its HD glory then you cant go wrong with this and you wont be dissapointed. Or if you still want to complain about semi missing spears that move so fast you would have to slow it down see, then please stick to some glitches in films forum.

5 out of 5 stars THE UK VERSION IS STUNNING!!!!   September 8, 2009

I disregarded most of the reviews on Amazon as people were reviewing an item that hadn't been released yet and i purchased Gladiator (One of my all time favourite pieces of cinema) at the full rrp in HMV. br / br /It seems in anticipation of the BD release people searched the net high and low for info on the quality of this transfer and found alot of U.S feedback stating there was a complete massacre of this film . I can say now (After actually buying the film on BD and watching it TWICE at home on my BD player and HD TV) it is absolutely stunning and my TV is now 3 years old and only 1080i! br / br /From the sepia toned Dreamworks/Universal intro to the slow upward pan of the colesseum and Rome at Dawn ending, it is breathtaking. The colour is stunning and i noticed Greens and Red's in the Germania section of the film that i have never noticed before! There is an added illumination to faces and you can see sweat, tears, eyelashes and pores you can even make out individual grey and black hairs on Oliver Reed's beard! I paid particular attention to the arrows at the start as this seemed to be a black spot for everyone and i couldn't see a thing wrong, i actually noticed smoke trails that i had missed previously! The saturation has been boosted and the contrast has been stepped up for a touch more clarity. The picture of this film is finally as intended! br / br /The sound is phenomenal and i usually have to turn my BD's up to here vocal and then it's too loud on everything else but this is balanced perfectly. Punches don't sound too A-Team and sword clinks ring on like piano tuners, the arrows at the start whoosh past and explosions are speaker busters. Speech is clear and concise and you can pick up little bits all over, i heard plenty of lines ive missed previously as mumbles. br / br /Lastly this version is packed with extras if you purchesed the 3 disc DVD version you'll be pleased to know this is it in BD form, if not and you only had a normal version your in for a treat as it's crammed with stuff! There is a 3 hour making of if your interested. They have even taken the time to add the treasure chest on here and this was a collection of left over material Pietro Scala put together with music from Hans Zimmer and lasted for about 15 mins, it was on the original 2001 2-disc DVD release but not on the 3-Disc Special Edition it is a really nice touch to the extras. br / br /With all this in mind this film is perfect on Bluray. I watched this for the first time on VHS when i was 17, i had it on DVD twice and i missed the One Night Only showing in Vue cinemas on the 27.08.09. I am over the moon with the BD and i know i will be watching over and over again. Please don't be put off by other reviews. This is Ridley Scott's Gladiator with the extra scenes in the best possible picture so far. Buy it and enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of arrows to enjoy!   September 6, 2009

I completely agree with the last reviewer. After reading all the one-star verdicts on this issue, I tried to cancel my order but was too late. My copy arrived this morning and I had to see for myself. From the start, the film looks great, and is definately high definition. Personally, I think the arrows were all there; the colour and sound are fantastic, and the visual improvement in detail is just what I expected from a Blu-Ray disc. I thought it was a great viewing experience, and better than the DVD. But, if you're worried, rent it first.

My copy arrived yesterday morning and I've spent the past day going through the discs in detail. The picture quality is excellent! Can't be more simple than that. Honestly, I have no idea why everyone is complaining. A typically fantastic Ridley Scott home release.
