Amazon.co.uk Review
If the devil is in the details, there's a lot of wicked fun in iAngels Demons/i, the sequel (originally a prequel) to iThe Da Vinci Code/i. Director Ron Howard delivers edge-of-your-pew thrills all over the Vatican, the City of Rome, and the deepest, dankest catacombs. Tom Hanks is dependably watchable in his reprised role as Professor Robert Langdon, summoned urgently to Rome on a matter of utmost urgency--which happens to coincide with the death of the Pope, meaning the Vatican is teeming with cardinals and Rome is teeming with the faithful. A religious offshoot group, calling themselves the Illuminati, which protested the Catholic Church's prosecution of scientists 400 years ago, has resurfaced and is making extreme, and gruesome, terrorist demands. p/pThe film zooms around the city, as Langdon follows clues embedded in art, architecture, and the very bone structure of the Vatican. The cast is terrific, including Ewan McGregor, who is memorable as a young protégé of the late pontiff, and who seems to challenge the common wisdom of the Conclave just by being 40 years younger than his fellows when he lectures for church reform. Stellan Skarsgard is excellent as a gruff commander of the Swiss Guard, who may or may not have thrown in with the Illuminati. But the real star of the film is Rome, and its High Church gorgeousness, with lush cinematography by Salvatore Totino, who renders the real sky above the Vatican, in a cataclysmic event, with the detail and majesty of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. i--A.T. Enjoyed this much more than I expected too. More thrilling with twists and turns in the plot than the first movie. Bluray picture was superb on 1080p 50" plasma and HD audio was was equally crisp. The extended version just seemed to have more blood and gore.

Watched this on Bluray yesterday evening and it was utterly superb. Picture and sound quality (DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1) is top notch, a really enjoyable and gripping movie as well, highly recommended!

I saw this in the cinema today and was absorbed from start to finish. I was particularly impressed at how well Dan Brown's book was portrayed on film. One or two bits of the story were omitted from the film but they were not major omissions and, had they been included, might have extended the film to a length which could have put off potential viewers from sitting through it. br / br /The story takes a bit of following and the early part of the film is devoted to setting the scene for the non-stop action which follows. The story unfolds at pace and holds the attention until the end when the viewer is hit with a sting in the tail which comes as a huge surprise (unless you've already read the book of course!). br / br /I can't wait for this to hit the market on blue ray disc. It is more absorbing and exciting than the Da Vinci Code. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Angelic transition to the big screen   September 12, 2009

First off Angels and Demons is a very different film from its prequel. br /Where Da Vinci is quite slow paced and focused on introducing the world to Robert Langdon's expert puzzle solving via symbology Angels and Demons is a more fast paced almost action type film. br / br /The basic premise of the film is the revival of the centuries old battle of Science vs Religion and that following the death of the Pope the Catholic Church is about to elect its new leader, but just at this point an old enemy, the scientific group, the Iluminati seemingly resurface bent on avenging 4 public executions a century ago. br / br /The Catholic Church aware of Langdon's expertise through his repeat request to access the Vatican cities archives calls Robert in in the hope of avoiding the deaths of the 4 kidnapped "preferiti" the 4 preferred candidates for the Papal role. br / br /What follows is a highly paced "thriller-esk" film that in many ways is very faithful to the equally highly paced Dan Brown novel. br / br /What is always a problem is balancing the detailed insights authors such as Brown give to the background of their story against the need to move the film along and I happen to think much like Da Vinci the producers have done an admiral job. br / br /Tom Hanks reprises his role of Langdon and again is very believable as the knowledgeable academic. br /The vast majority of the rest of the cast are familiar faces but not big names with the exception of the equally important central protagonist of the Carmelengo played by Ewan McGregor br / br /Those who have read the book like me will likely applaud this inspired casting as McGregor pulls of the almost perfect balance of passionate defense of the Catholic Church with the growing flashes of someone acting beyond the boundaries of his position. br / br /The bluray presentation is good but does have the seemingly common hint of noise in the picture but this is far from the worst I've seen. br /The colours within the film are perfect balance of the Cardinals are vibrant and clear and yet the darker scenes maintain crispness and clarity with very little judder during the fast moving pan shots that are common place in this film. br /The sound on this disc is the real triumph with clear stand out centre dialog with the right balance of surround audio - perfect. br / br /Overall a brilliant film.
