Fire Up The Quattro - LOM Team has done it again!! June 10, 2009 Marko Hundertmark (Hamburg) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Normally you don't write reviews before the DVD release date but this time i have to. I was a big fan of LOM and after the first episode of A2A i was not sure if this show could keep what LOM already delivered. But after seeing episode after episode i got thrilled by this show just as i was with LOM. I preordered the DVD set of series 1 and enjoyed it very much. When series 2 was ready to preorder i ordered it without having seen even one episode of the series. Now after the completion of series 2 on BBC i am very glad that i preordered the set because it only gets better and better. Gene Hunt, Alex Drake, Ray Carling, Chris Skelton, Shaz (does she have a surname?), Luigi all so loveable characters. Those added with twists and turns, 80s feel and music, great one liners and some big question marks leaving you begging for more! I just love the show and i can recommend it to everyone who likes well written scripts, great characters and thrilling quality TV. They have done it again: i'm totally hooked. So, fire up the Quattro an let it be the realease date of season 2 so i can watch it again and again :)
A2A 2.0: Darker, funnier, and better June 11, 2009 Georgia Smiley (Los Angeles) 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
I was a fan of the original LOM and Series 1 of A2A had its moments. I liked that Alex was the complete opposite of Sam. She was sure of herself, didn't care what anyone thought and was pro-active. Some thought her smug, I thought her wonderful. I didn't care for Gene Hunt in LOM, he bent the law, drank too much, and beat people up thinking he'd get confessions. He thought he was above the law. Yes, he was decidedly un-P.C. but I didn't care for him...I was in the minority as some found him heroic.
br /
br /In A2A, Gene evolved. He wasn't policing in the 1970's anymore and Alex helped him use more modern techniques. A grudging respect blossomed.
br /In Series-2, the respect and working relationship has bloomed. Alex has settled in nicely with the team. The banter is wonderful as ever but the over-arching mysteries of this series are deeper, darker and more sinister.
br /A growing police corruption scandal is present throughout as is Alex's completely upended vision of where exactly she is and how to get out. The rules of this world aren't what she thought. The ground is constantly moving under her feet but she has found a bit of traction with the team and particularly Gene Hunt. Ray, Chris, and Shaz are there for support and a spot of learning but something is amiss.
br /
br /I won't spoil it but this does crescendo beautifully to a final two-part conclusion which had our family simultaneously holding our breath and screaming. Pins and needles this one.
br /
br /The writing is far more assured in Series-2 and so is the direction. Hawes and Glenister shine and they do have chemistry to burn: it's deeper than sexual chemistry and neither will admit it. They are both supremely gifted at speaking volumes with their eyes. The supporting cast each get their moment in the sun and they shine. I particularly loved the Alex-Ray relationship and how it developed through the season. Marvelously played with a deft touch by both.
br /
br /If you like to get lost in mysteries and love to theorize, this is your show. You do have to watch and re-watch. I miss half the clues on first watch. The producers are careful to plant clues from the first seconds of episode one that reverberate all the way through the finale.

Gene Hunt returns, and this time he's serious. June 24, 2009 Blackhorse47 (Moray, Scotland) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Season 1 set up the scenario. Alex Drake is a cop in 2008. She is called out to a hostage situation in which odd-ball Layton shoots her in the head. Alex collapses. When she awakes it's 1981 and she's a female cop in a macho world ruled by her boss Gene Hunt.
br /
br /The series had mixed reactions. Some thought the light, fun approach was enjoyable. Others thought the approach didn't work as well as the darker earlier series Life on Mars. The makers listened to the criticism and before the season aired they claimed they'd addressed the issues that concerned viewers and that this time they'd made the series darker. They did. Season 2 is as dark as anything Life on Mars produced.
br /
br /The series has two main story arcs. One arc concerns itself with the bigger mystery of how Alex can get back home. This is moved along by the addition of a new mystery character who haunts Alex and sends her roses. The other arc delves into the murky world of police corruption, and uncovers a sordid underbelly to the force in which anyone and everyone could be involved. Both arcs work perfectly with well-paced resolutions of the mysteries that keep you guessing right up until the big reveals.
br /
br /The individual stories are all grittier than anything in season 1. They are also filmed in a grittier style. In Life on Mars everything was nicotine-stained and dirty. Season 1 turned away from that with a world that was bright, large and colourful. Now everything is claustrophobic again. The sets are the same, but not all the lights are on; characters aren't filmed in full brightness. Cameras are put in odd places such as filming from the floor up someone's leg and close-ups are uncomfortably close. The outside sequences move away from the bright warehouses to a sordid litter-strewn part of town.
br /
br /The characters are also more real and are no longer played for comic effect. Ray takes a bribe within the first five minutes of episode 1 turning his character back to way he was at the start of Life on Mars. Chris is still an idiot, but he also has interesting character developments later on. Hunt is back to the man we weren't sure about at the start. He does less one-liners than before (thankfully, as in season 1 nearly every line was a barked attempt to utter a classic line) and there's no shots of him just standing there looking heroic. And thankfully Alex has gone for a more sober hairstyle, and she's no longer made-up like a cosmetic model in a tv advert and is instead allowed to look her age.
br /
br /Despite all the grit, the series provides just as many laughs as before, except this time they have a real edge to them. By the time the season reaches its jaw-dropping ending you'll be more than pleased to know that there will be a season 3.
love the series lets talk about the special features July 17, 2009 Mrs. A. Gardner (Surrey, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just got the dvd the other day...
br /Now hopefully with others peoples reviews, synopsis you are able to gather what the series is about, also you should really see series one first otherwise you'll be very confused.
br /I'm here to write a bit about the dvd extras:
br /1. Commentary on episodes 1 and 2
br /2. The 80s Quiz
br /3. Behind the Scenes
br /
br /1. the commentaries - they are both fine commentaries with Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham talking about ep 1 and 2. Bit of a shame there are no actors talkings as they can usually come up with funny or interesting things that we didn't know about this episode, like 'it was really hot that day, or I couldn't stop laughing during that scene' - just to add a bit more to them.
br /
br /2. The 80s quiz, this is fun - you get to see the actors being themselves and answering questions about 1982, see if you can answer them yourself... the onle thing I'd say is that it should be longer, I thought it was over to quick.
br /
br /3. Behind the Scenes - this is always good, you get a few short interviews with Philip, Keeley, Dean etc talking about the scenes there doing, so this is nice to see as you see a bit behind the camera, especially since they go through every character, and how they've changed or whats happened to them in the new series.
br /
br /Overall not a bad set of special featurres of course I always want more but this is definelty worth it with this and the episodes you won't be disappointed. x
It just gets better and better! June 9, 2009 Foxy 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
And by that I mean the whole franchise. We started with a wonderfully unusual and intriguing drama in Life on Mars and it has only improved from there as far as I'm concerned. I find myself enjoying each new series more than the ones that preceeded it and this second series of Ashes to Ashes is no exception.
br /
br /Many people have been extremely critical of Keeley Hawes performance, but personally, I have throughly enjoyed watching her character develop over the 2 series we've had so far. I would say the acting quality as a whole is excellent! The central characters are richly portrayed and engaging and the spots of humour, particularly from the genius that is the Gene Genie, make for a fantastic hours worth of entertainment. The plotline remains imaginative, even if some of the originality is now lost as we've moved on so far from the first series of Life on Mars, with the writers still managing to suprise us. (I won't give it away, but I was shocked when the corrupt character was revealed in episode 7!)
br /
br /I eagerly await the release of the dvd so I can rewatch the series and enjoy it all over again. Fire up the Quattro for series 3!
