Amazon.co.uk Review
Wolverine, fan favourite of the X-Men universe in both comic books and film, gets his own movie vehicle with iX-Men Origins: Wolverine/i, a tale that reaches way, way back into the hairy mutant's story. Somewhere in the wilds of northwest Canada in the early 1800s, two boys grow up amid violence: half-brothers with very special powers. Eventually they will become the near-indestructible warriors (and victims of a super-secret government program) known as Wolverine and Sabretooth, played respectively by Hugh Jackman (returning to his role) and Liev Schreiber (new to the scene). It helps enormously to have Schreiber, an actor of brawny skills, as the showiest villain; the guy can put genuine menace into a vocal inflection or a shift of the eyes. Danny Huston is the sinister government operative whose experiments keep pulling Wolverine back in, Lynn Collins is the woman who shares a peaceful Canadian co-existence with our hero when he tries to drop out of the program, and Ryan Reynolds adds needed humour, at least for a while. p/pThe fast-paced early reels give an entertaining kick-off to the Wolverine saga, only to slow down when a proper plot must be put together--but isn't that perpetually the problem with origin stories? And despite a cool setting, the grand finale is a little hemmed in by certain plot essentials that must be in place for the sequels, which may be why characters do nonsensical things. So, this one is fun while it lasts, if you're not looking for a masterpiece, or an explanation for Wolverine's facial grooming. i--Robert Horton, Amazon.com/i p/p span class="h1"strongStills from emX-Men Origins: Wolverine/em (Click for larger image)/strong/span table border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="4" width="100%" p/p p/p tbody tr align="center" valign="top" tdimg src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-dvd/fox/Wolverine2-small.jpg" / /td p/p tdimg src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-dvd/fox/Wolverine1-small.jpg" / /td tdimg src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-dvd/fox/Wolverine4-small.jpg" / br //td p/p /tr tr align="center" valign="top" tdimg src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-dvd/fox/Wolverine5-small.jpg" //td p/p tdimg height="200" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-dvd/fox/Wolverine3-small.jpg" width="300" //td br / p/p /tr /tbody /table /p /div /div

5 out of 5 stars Action to get your Claws into.   May 3, 2009
Dismal Angel (Scotland)
From the ever popular X-Men franchise, finally the fans get to see their wishes realised. A movie to focus on the story of Wolverine, and his origins before he met up with Rogue and the rest of the X-Men in the first film that saw him immortalised on screen. br / br /Following from his childhood as the son of a wealthy plantation owner in Canada, James "Jimmy" Howlett ends up on the run after an accident following the revelation of his unique mutation. He, and his somewhat feral brother Victor later find a way to put their beserker rages into use with the American Army, and are invited to join a special team of talented and powerful individuals led by William Stryker. br / br /Soon, Jimmy begins to see that he may be on the wrong side of right and that his brother Victor is becoming more and more unhinged and unstoppable. He decides to take off and go on his own way and begins to make a life for himself with a steady honest-man's job, and a pretty school teacher; however this may be cut short when William Stryker returns to advise him someone is killing off the members of his old team one by one and to stop the one responsible may mean going to VERY extreme measures. br / br /One thing that will dissapoint several fans of the comics about this adaptation is that several events were "skipped" from Wolverine's past and several that never happened were "added" to make room and reasons for the action. br / br /A few characters from the comics do appear, but as with Wolverine, are hard to initially identify (such as Wraith, Bolt and Blob). Gambit and Deadpool also make appearances and have decent parts to play in the movie, however, their characters are so diluted and unlike their comic selves that true fans will definately feel cheaped and left with MANY questions burning on the tongues. br / br /Really, you have to take the movie for what it is, watch it and try to ignore everything you've ever known about Wolverine and his past before you can sit down and watch this. Think of it almost as stand alone and not an extension of the comics and books. br /

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!   May 6, 2009
Marlyly (London - UK)
As a fan of the original trilogy (well, at leats the first two instalments) I wasn't sure what to expect when it came to this film - on the one hand I love the X-Men films, I've always found the character of Wolverine fascinating and wanted to know more about his backstory, and the trailers for this film look awesome. On the other hand, the idea of the X-Men Origins films is a disaster waiting to happen, delving into each characters past, introducing new characters and completely ignoring some of the ones that made the trilogy so memorable. br / br /Well, now I've watched it I can easily say that this film was quite simply superb and that I cannot wait to see it again, as well as any new Origins films they make (though how they're going to top this I'm not sure). br / br /After an incredibly confusing opening scene introducing Wolverine (or Jamie as he was known back then) and his brother Victor when they were kids, the film quickly fast forwards a few years to show the brothers experiences in the army. But, due to Victor, the brothers find themselves infront of a firing squad, who despite shooting them many times cannot do the two of them any harm. Cue Strider's entrance, asking Jamie (Logan, Wolverine, whatever) and Victor to join him and his 'special' team, which they do. Want to know what happens next? Watch the film. =) br / br /It's been a while since I've been sucked into a film the same way I was drawn into this one, the plot was most definately engaging (rivals X2 in my opinion for the best X-Men film story so far), the pieces of Wolverine's past fit together like those of a puzzle, and I more than once found my mouth opening in shock or surprise as revelation after revelation revealed itself. And, of course, the acting was superb on all accounts, especially Hugh Jackman as Wolverine - I can't think of a single actor more suited to the role. br / br /One I'd definately recommend to fans of the previous films, and even new comers to X-Men. I went to see this with a friend who'd never watched X-Men in her life, but had seen this the night it came out and dragged me along, desperate to see it again. Now I'm trying to convince my family to take me to see it again! An intelligent, exciting and really quite sad film - one of the better ones I've seen this year.

5 out of 5 stars film review   November 8, 2009
Ms. F. L. Buchanan (Scotland)
Absolutely brilliant film, just as good as the x men trilogy. Explains a lot of te flashbacks wolverine has in the first three films with lots of action and some romance as well. good special effects but not over the top as is happening in a lot of films nowadays. Its one of those films your glad you bought and would watch again.
