| Customer Reviews: Harsh Reception for a Good Film. July 20, 2009 C.L.H (Scotland) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Visually, S. Darko is stunning, all the more so for being a blu-ray disk. The wardrobe, setting visual effects are all mind blowingly beautiful and recreate the atmosphere of the '90s.

br /Plot wise, unless you have a good understanding of physics and grasp the concept of time travel, it won't be nearly as easy to follow. Accessability is an issue, but that barrier is worth crossing. The characters of Samantha and Corey are believable and easy to empathize with. Allusions to "Donnie Darko" are artfully placed throughout the film.
br /
br /In essence, this film lacks the raw turbulance present throughout "Donnie Darko". The morose and polished atmosphere Sam creates is not inferior, it suits her character. She Corey are both acted very well indeed, as are Trudy, Iraq Jack... everyone.
br /
br /Don't watch it for the sake of weighing it against "Donnie Darko". Appreciate the film for what it is, and don't make judgments until it is finished. "Donnie Darko" was one of a kind, but this is "S. Darko" and something special. The fact that this film differs from the prequel doesn't make it pretentious.
food for feelings... September 10, 2009 Colin Farquhar (Corby UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Watching the movie with my 19 year old son, he said a few times 'this makes no sence', yet we both enjoyed Donnie Darko.
br /Personally S.Darko easily matches the first.
br /The movie sums up many emotions and feelings which often can't be put into words, but if you sit down looking for these, they may pass you by.
br /Of course I have never experienced time travel, but many emotions came through which I have had in hospital - under medication. Like many movies the best part is later when you're reflecting.
br /food for feelings...
br /FIVE STARS ALL ROUND!
A lack of courage September 9, 2009 DomTH (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's not a horrible film and certainly not as bad as it could be. Briana Evigan and Daveigh Chase are both very good, the movie, shot on Red 1 High Defintion cameras, looks beautiful on Blu-ray and even, at times, the storyline captures some of that dark dreamy quality of the first film.
br /
br /But . . . the film never quite has the courage to break away from the original and stand on its own two feet. Every time it seems about to go in its own direction, it falls back on rehashing something from the first film - a handheld party sequence with lots of speed-ups to a piece of contemporary music is a prime example, referencing the sequence where Donnie walks into his school in the original film. It goes beyond referencing the previous film's visual motifs or even homage and just ends up being a rip-off.
br /
br /I liked the idea that tangent universes are happening all the time and that Donnie Darko was just one of many such incidents. In the case of this film, there appear to be tangents within tangents and there's one really unexpected loop/divergence in the timeline I didn't see coming.
br /
br /A Darko movie where the main character is one step removed from the Living Receiver - Donnie's role in the first film - and looking on with a certain amount of ignorance is an intriguing one. But, whether it was a fear of upsetting the original film's fans - don't worry, they're upset anyway! - or a lack of creativity meaning they didn't add anything much to the original, the film simply falls flat.
br /
br /I don't regret taking the time to see the film and I don't hate it. More than anything, I think it really did have potential, but blew it.
br /
br /I rented the film and wouldn't recommend buying unless it's in a sale.
They made me do it, curiosity and all... November 19, 2009 steven (UK) s.Darko is a strange film to sum up. It's no where near as bad as I thought it would be and yet, it's probably best described as a beautiful failure. A failure, because it's almost a direct copy of the first part with a twist or two thrown in. It looks stunning (hence the beautiful part) filmed with HD cameras every strand of hair and every part of the actors faces / clothing is noticeable. The scenery and special effects are fantastic and Daveigh makes a captivating lead as Samantha. In fact both the acting and directing is spot on. The problem (as expected) lies with the storyline. You have to understand Donnie Darko to make sense of this movie or it'll come across as gibberish to you. I did enjoy certain parts of it, there's a major shock half way through (which I won't spoil) I had to rewind it back to make sure that it actually happened and I do like the idea of Samantha taking on Frank's role (from the first movie) The Iraq soldier (Donnie's part) burning down the church is never explained. In Donnie Darko he does this and it turns out that Jim's character is a paedophile. Why does this happen in the sequel? Who knows. I understand that Samantha's friend is playing the Donnie role too. She's travelling along God's path within the same tangent universe but what is the significance of the cinema this time around? And why do we see the film titles backwards later on? What's the point of the Bunny rabbit suit? Other then, so it can appear in the trailer. Donnie Darko was a puzzle and it's one of my all time favourite movies. Frank takes Donnie into a tangent universe, where he falls in love, loses the love of his life, uses the time-travel book to send the plane back in time, thus giving the plane engine a reason to be there (the artefact) and repairs the rip in the space time continuum. The original has several things going for it that s.Darko doesn't, it's a tragic love story and teenagers / young people can relate to Donnie and rejoice when he saves the world! If he can make a difference, why can't we? It has better characters, better music and the script was new and fresh. s.Darko entertained me for it's running time but it's still just a re-hash of the original. Will curiosity get the better of you? I'd say it's worth a watch...just wait until the end before you judge it.

In places this film really looks the part. Nice setting, pretty hippy chicks and the blu ray looks good. Unfortunately most of it resembles one of those American true movies. A rather cheap, shallow, shadow of a great movie with some awful wooden fake mystical or cool conversations and the geek has glasses and the bad guy has a car type characters.
br /I have a little bit of hatred for this film. I knew it was going to be rubbish, but I had a level of curiosity and love for the original that I knew I was going to watch it anyway. I knew I was going to be disappointed and watch a film that takes a huge wiz over the grave of a classic movie. S. Darko managed to tick all the wrong boxes.
