5 out of 5 stars Best drama this year   July 19, 2009

Torchwood. The show that started off as a spin-off to the juggernaut that is Doctor Who. That is no longer the case, as Torchwood manages to find it's own feet in this series, which can only be described as a masterpiece of television. br / br /Firstly, I have watched all of season one and two of Torchwood. Although I enjoyed them all, there is definitely a feel that the show was inconsistent with it's writing and acting. You'd often have a great episode, and then you'd be left with something rather like a damp squid. To someone who is not a long term fan, this would have left a sour taste in their mouths. However, all of that is shoved aside with 'Children of Earth', the 5 part television event that was originally broadcast over 5 consecutive days. There is not one episode in this series that you could describe as weak - each part added to the story and kept the flow running nicely along. br / br /Secondly, the acting. Oh the praise I have regarding this subject. Not only do the original cast members manage to 'up their game', but the guest stars in this series are where the show shined. One man in particular, Peter Capaldi (who plays John Frobisher) totally out-acted the rest of the cast. Wonderful on all accounts. You want to hate him, but find it impossible to do so as Capaldi manages to pull in viewer sympathy in light of the outrageously wrong things he is plotting to do. A guy who perfectly portrays the family man who will do anything, no matter how awful, to protect his family. Never before have I seen such beautiful acting in a British sci-fi drama. br / br /Another thing to mention is that this series of Torchwood, which happens to be the third, is not just accessible for people who have watched the previous series. Any new viewer can easily begin watching this series, having not watched any of the previous, and enjoy what is on offer. Yes, perhaps long term fans can garner more from this series, but new viewers can just as easily love it. br / br /For a show that is in it's third series, it is very surprising that it continues to impress and shock the viewers. As a matter of fact, 'Children of Earth' is much better than over 90% of new doctor who stories. This is from a show that spawned as a 'spin off', and has now managed to be better than most of it's older brother. br / br /Finally, if you are looking at this product and wondering whether it would be worth watching if you've never watched Torchwood before, then my advice is to just do it. You will not regret it. As far as British sci-fi goes, this package is up there with the best of the bunch. I promise you, you will feel horrified, shocked, amazed, surprised, excited, upset, devastated and angry all at once when you watch this. br / br /5/5 on all fronts.

5 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment on any level   July 9, 2009

Torchwood returns for a five-hour single-story drama which is more watchable than ever. Lots of highly improbable action and suspense combine with a very topical critique of our self-interested political establishment, as aliens come to earth with large-scale child abduction plans. In an interesting deviation from the archetypal alien invasion movie in which the government automatically fights, the (British) government opts for collaboration with the aliens. The vacuousness of (electoral) democracy is revealed as politicians seek to do deals with the aliens, shamefully looking after their own interests while selling out the people, and the people's children, starting with the most vulnerable and defenceless. The nepotism and classism in British politics is portrayed with consummate irony and the darkly comic depiction of politicians' spin/lies is most appropriate at this point in time. The politicians' focus on preserving image and power at all costs is mockingly portrayed, as the unelected and unaccountable Torchwood team fight for an ethical approach to the issue of alien terrorism. And all this with an all-action plot which keeps you guessing, and lots of last-minute escapes which make the Bond movies seem banal and unimaginative in comparison. Wonderful stuff. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars we...we are...we are coming!   September 26, 2009

This is the first series of Tourchwood I've seen. I've heard from others that the first 2 series weren't all that good, but this one is brilliant. br /Plot: One ordinary day, every child on Planet Earth suddenly stops, and in unison, speak a message of warning. br /'We are coming!' br /As the Tourchwood team investigate, they are forced underground by the British government, who seem desperate for something that happened over 40 year's previously to remain a secret. It isn't long before Jack, and the British civil service, learn that those terrible events of 1965 are coming back to haunt them. br /The 456 are returning to Earth, and only Tourchwood can save the children of earth from a fate worse than death... br /Pros: In short, this story is brilliant! It is, in my opinion, how Tourchwood's parent series, Dr Who, should be made. It's a dark, good vs evil type of story, where plenty of bad things happen to the good guys before the end. The acting is great, and the 456 is a brilliant idea, a villian that is hardly seen, and that claims to be helping humanity whilst is actully holding them at gunpoint. This story is proof that a great story dosn't need to be full of CGI. br /Cons. As far as I can see, the only drawback is episode 5. It's a good episode, but just dosn't seem as good as the previous episodes. br / br /Other than this, it's well yworth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Will make adults grow up...   July 10, 2009

Have just seen this on BBC One and can't wait for the DVD. I'm not a major fan of Torchwood, but after watching the last season of Doctor Who, decided to give it another go by watching this. If you're a parent and a lover of sci-fi then this will touch you to your very core. It questions political ethics and morality, touches on anarchy, but most of all is the importance of family, and the world we are leaving behind for our kids. As a thirty-one year old father of two, it even bought a tear to my eye. At one point you're begging for the Doctor to turn up to make things right(he gets mentioned a couple of times), but this being Torchwood, it's not that simple. br /Which is the whole point of the show in the first place. br /The soundtrack alone is very moving. br /I'll give it five stars... for being a very brave storyline. br /

5 out of 5 stars What any fan could ask for...TORCHWOOD every single day!!~ Series 3 is a masterpiece   July 12, 2009

from the first scene in Day One to the final in Day Five you are immediately dramn into the story and all you can think about is the startling revalation that has happened and where RTD will take you in the next episode. br /this is both sci-fi and drama at it's very best and has the edge that makes this not any old spin-off and a force to be reckoned with. br /Children of Earth (like series 4 of Doctor Who0 really tested the strengths of Russel T.Davies as a show runner and lead writer (being absent from Torchwood since Everything Changes in series 1)as (like with series 4) the main arc comes something of epic proportions but the character drama comes to the immediate fore and drives the whole show (not just Jack, ianto and Gwen but the minor characters/players too!)through its five episode run. br /to me what the show has done in five episodes is what a lot of american sci-fi shows struggle to do with 20 odd episodes as with five episodes everything here is at its strongest; the actin more derivative, the tension heightened, the plot strong and the finale BIG! br / br /the tone here is very different when compared to series 2 (like 2 was to series 1), it has become much darker, sinister and all the more deeper in its story telling. br /Gwen,ianto and jack each have there own back story and family elements that contribute with the main plot nicely, and add much deeper knowledge to each of the characters backgrounds. br / br /Ianto meets up and bonds closer to his (hilarious) sister and brother in law, sharing light laughs and some secrets. br /Jack meets his daughter(now in her late thirties) and grandson which provokes more dramatic elements. br /Gwen has the most startling and major reveltions of the lot as she reveals that her and Rhys are going to have a family member on the way. br / br /Lois Habiba and agent Johnson make for interesting players within this grande storyline as both female characters are unsure of their positions in their workforce (Johnson is more of a villainous character while Lois has her nightmare first week). br / br /i would love to praise RTD for writing such an amazing storyline and making the aliens the 456 very unsettling and actually very frightening, and for providing the best set of episodes i have ever seen on a sci-fi show (along with Doctor Who's 4th series of course)and the best plotline ever. br / br /the cliffhangers, action and startling sequences (the tour-de-force sequence where Phrobisher must murder his own family to save them is devastating) as well as the most chilling and emotional scenes in history (a major character unfortunately meets their doom at the hands of the 456 in an emotional goodbye that will help in major developments in future episodes)and maybe breaking the taboo-musn't show child death on screen is so very RTD. br / br /Euros Lyn was amazing as director of each episode making this the most exciting pieces of television i have ever seen and drawing out the raw emotion of each character (Jack's eyes to reflect true emotion of refelction, love and regret/ Gwen's chilling speech in Day Five and Ianto confessing his love for Jack). br /and the best escape sequence i have ever seen in Day Two with the JCB was absolutely hilarious and action-packed. br / br /i say an audience of 6million a day should help get Torchwood back to us with a 4th series next year, also with more episodes with this tone it would make for an interesting future for the show. br / br /a sheer must see series of episodes that has it all from day One - Five. br / br /10/10 class!!
