| Customer Reviews: Great romantic rehash of A Christmas Carol October 21, 2009 Axel Birgir Gústavsson 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This film was negatively received when it opened and hasn't really had a good word of mouth and i am definitely in a minority for really liking Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.
br /
br /I was not very fond of the first act of the film but it sets up the story just right. The film takes a turn for the better when the first ghost appears and only gets better from that point and flushes out the characters very well and following the message and story of A Christmas carol(excluding Christmas) closely.
br /
br /What truly surprised me was how heartwarming the film was and tastefully it handled the sexually oriented humor. The last minutes of the film are a bit too focused on the comedy but it could have ended a lot worse.
br /
br /The casting is surprisingly good and there is no bad performance in the film but Michael Douglas is a little distracting and i could have done with a more majestic actor for his role. It's recommended for those who are looking for a good rom-com or a film with a fun twist on the classic Dickens' story

br /Other recommendations: Definitely, Maybe(2008), Mickey's Christmas Carol(1983) and Scrooged(1988)
Just OK... September 21, 2009 K. Hanson (London, UK) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Don't get me wrong I like Matthew McConaughey, but let's face it, he always plays the same 'look at me and my six pack' character. He also sports a very dubious bob in this movie which worried me slightly.
br /
br /It's not the funniest rom com i've seen but is ok, worth a watch on a Friday night-in with the girls.
"I've Got Ghosts in My Room" September 22, 2009 Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
Connor Mead (Matthew McConaughey) is living every man's dream. He has made a career out of photographing scantily clad women. But that's nothing compared to the string of women he's left behind him. No woman seems to be able to resist his charm, but once he's slept with them, he moves on. Heck, he is able to break up with three women at once on a conference chat while still getting the one in his room to sleep with him.
br /
br /All that changes the weekend of his brother Paul's (Breckin Meyer) wedding. Connor is the best man, so he returns to his uncle Wayne's estate where he is reunited with his first crush Jenny (Jennifer Garner). But as he is putting his moves on everyone around him, he starts seeing ghosts. First, it's Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas), who warns him about three more to come. Will Connor learn anything from these visits?
br /
br /Quite obviously, this is the romantic comedy version of A Christmas Carol, a personal favorite of mine. Between that, Jennifer Garner, and the fun previews, I thought this might actually be fun. And it had a few fun moments. I laughed a few times. And I appreciated how the story was advanced with Connor interacting with the real people at the wedding in between the ghostly visits.
br /
br /The acting, on the other hand, could have been better. Even Jennifer Garner wasn't up to her normal standards. The only one I really liked was Michael Douglas. The ghostly special effects, on the other hand, were great.
br /
br /My problem with this movie lies squarely on the shoulders of the writers. It was written by two guys. Instead of being a romantic comedy where Connor learns an important lesson, this is really a guy's fantasy flick. Heck, we get a long flashback scene were Uncle Wayne is teaching a teenaged Connor how to score with women. It adds nothing to the story or the characters. It is only there because the authors found it fun.
br /
br /Then there's the bride to be. Yes, they were playing the overstressed bride for laughs, but she was such a despised characters, I was actually agreeing with Connor that his brother shouldn't marry the woman.
br /
br /All this really shows itself in the climax. Yes, we get the expected moral (the ending is hardly a surprise), but it happens so fast, I don't believe that Connor has actually learned anything.
br /
br /My love of A Christmas Carol makes me look on this film more favorably then I should. Don't be fooled by the previews, this is not a romantic comedy. It is nothing but a male fantasy that pretends to be something else. It isn't worth your time or money.
Boring! October 5, 2009 Rachel (Weston-Super-Mud, UK) Usually I enjoy romcoms, but this was just cliched rubbish I'm sorry to say. A really weak storyline meant I just couldn't get into it. One I won't be watching again!
Passes some time on a long flight! October 14, 2009 Soo Broo (UK) I watched this on a long plane journey as a last resort; I'd already watched four films in succession so was a bit zonked and couldn't face Terminator Salvation at 3am. I thought I'd be able to nod off in this film then pick it up again without losing the storyline. And I was right.
br /
br /I thought it was a real blokey take on Dickens' A Christmas Carol - you can imagine the pitch to Matthew MacConnaughey. 'Hey Matt, so, you're a world famous photographer, we'll get you an Aston Martin, all the girls want but you just HATE commitment AND we have you in a room facing all the HUNDREDS of girls you've ever been with - sound good? Bit of a no brainer for him I imagine.
br /
br /He is cute to look at, but his expression is only ever smiling in a bemused fashion or wide eyed which does for every other emotion. Jennifer Garner is OK in an emaciated way, Lacey Chabert as the bride looks about 12 and is utterly obnoxious but Michael Douglas is quite good. The effects are good and it's an OK film, but nothing to really rave about. Perfect for when you're almost comatose on a long flight.
