Amazon.co.uk Review
A flat-out treasure trove of television, iThe Sopranos Complete HBO Seasons 1-6/i box set brings together every episode of a genuinely extraordinary series. Those that call it quite possibly the best show America has produced in the last decade arenrsquo;t far wide of the mark (although fans of The Wire could have an argument there).p/ To think iThe Sopranos/i all started from a simple sell: that a New Jersey mob boss falls into depression, and seeks out counselling to help him cope. And while early episodes followed Tony Sopranorsquo;s balancing act as he sought to keep this from his mobster friends, The Sopranos took this foundation and built upon it a collection of layered, intriguing characters from both Tonyrsquo;s ‘workrsquo; and ‘homersquo; families.p/ Thatrsquo;s only part of the reason for iThe Sopranos/irsquo; extraordinary success, though. Because the writers then seeded many delightfully intricate plotlines, that seemed to seamlessly weave between one another. The end result was that every character was important, and--crucially--there was a real sense of unease, as fans began to realise that iThe Sopranos/i could have a quiet run of episodes, and then suddenly take out a character yoursquo;ve spent hours engaged with.p/ Itrsquo;s a fascinating cocktail. Ruthless yet emotional, violent yet intimate, brash yet insecure, the characters of iThe Sopranos/i are as three dimensional as television drama gets. Itrsquo;s a tragedy itrsquo;s finished, but the six series in this box offer a stunning legacy, and a masterclass to anyone else in the planet looking to make a character-driven drama. --iSimon Brew/i

5 out of 5 stars New Packaging is the tops!!!   September 22, 2009

I won't bore you with more talk about this amazing piece of television gold, as enough has been said about how wonderful and great it is. br / br /Rather I just wish to say how amazing the new packaging is. br / br /The old red and black boxset was huge...even for a shoebox, and the individual sets were pretty chunky as well....but this new packaging is simply divine. br / br /A beautiful compact box with all seven series(including series 6 parts 1 and 2)individually housed in slimline cases...just like the individual series should be housed. br / br /One of the best box sets I've ever seen as far as packaging goes...as for the show....well just enjoy!!!!

5 out of 5 stars American TV at its best - pure magic...   September 13, 2009

I was quite excited about this box set as I've been wanting to buy it for a long time and it doesn't disappoint. The box set contains all the episodes (including the Season 6 finale) from The Sopranos and some extras. I was glad to see the removal of some the dvd menus from the individual boxsets. Namely; the informative synopsis shown for each episode, which for me slowed down the viewing experience. Simply put, this is a more refined boxset with the emphasis on the program itself - pure magic.

Despite being a fan of mob movies, I never managed to catch The Sopranos when it was broadcast on TV (I'm always too busy to properly follow a TV station's schedule). Nonetheless, I heard it was a good show, so I took the plunge and purchased the complete box set. br / br /Boy, am I glad I did. br / br /The Sopranos is compulsive viewing. I managed to watch all six seasons over the course of one month, because when one episode finishes, you're simply dying to watch the next! Each episode is crammed with interesting characters, cutting dialogue and first-rate acting. And although classified as a TV drama, there is a lot of humour injected into each episode, so its not all downbeat and grim - you'll be laughing during scenes as well! br / br /For fans of mob movies, The Sopranos is essential viewing. For casual fans, it still makes a great TV show. I know because my wife could care less for mob movies but even she would sit there watching episodes with me... Because its not just about the Mafia. Its about family and relationships as well - but certainly not in the "boring" way you may think it is. br / br /Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD set - Best TV Show ever.   October 29, 2009

I can't add anything new to all the praise that's been handed upon this show apart from saying that it's all deserved. Instead I'm going to talk specifically about this DVD set. br / br /The content: br /In case you were confused about which box set to get - this one is the full series over 28 discs which include all of the special features in the individual seasons. br / br /The Packaging: br /All 6 seasons are presented in 7 individual amery cases in the lovely black box - an apparent improvement over the "deluxe box set" but I'll come back to that later. br / br /Versus the Deluxe Box Set: br /There is also a deluxe box set out with 2 extra discs of extra features which are NOT included in this box set but it's composed out of a cardboard digipack case which is easier to damage and the housing for the discs leaves them open to lots of scratches. br / br /It's also about £60 more expensive and the extra features don't seem good enough to warrant that price tag - even for a Sopranos purist. br / br /Verdict: br /In terms of value and packaging - I'd definitely recommend you go for this box set over the deluxe one - especially at the prices it's going for now but if you really want to see those extra features - here is the link for the other box set - br /The Sopranos - Complete HBO Season 1-6 - Deluxe Edition [DVD] [1999] br /

5 out of 5 stars Nobody does it better.   September 28, 2009

The Sopranos is quite simply the greatest show of all time. I have yet to see a series that parallels this show for drama, humour, wit and wisdom and every episode has a clever mixture of each. The character arcs are superb and unpredictable (although don't get too attached to some characters, as you never know when they're cement shoes will be fitted.) Series highlights are the commonly daubed "Best episode" "The Pine Barrens" in season 3 and the last few episodes of the final season. For me, the character Paulie is the best to watch, and often provides plenty of comic relief (though rarely on his part, intentionally) br / br /This particular boxset is an improvement over the individual boxsets, as it tidys up the menus, moves the on-screen menu synopsis'to an episode guide booklet, and although very nitpicky, it cleans up the chaptering in season 3. (I'm not sure why but my old season 3 boxset was published by WB and was formatted differently. Most annoyingly, you couldn't skip the opening credits, which are 1min 40secs, without also skipping up to 5 mins of the beginning too. I got very confused when watching season 3 for the first time because of this!) br / br /Overall, this is what TV is all about (that is until I have my hands on the Complete Lost boxset!)
