This is, without doubt, the most entertaining horror of the year June 27, 2009 P. Jackson (uk) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
Remember watching the Evil Dead trilogy all those years ago? Welcome back!
br /
br /Director Sam Raimi is finally returning to his roots after neglecting his incredible love for the horror genre for so long; for too long, in fact. Drag Me To Hell is his new masterpiece- It's a crazy, hilarious, utterly terrifying and frequently surprising thrill-ride. You'd never believe a horror film could be this much fun!
br /
br /It's centred on a young female loans officer, Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) who refuses to extend a loan for old Mrs Ganush (Lorna Raver) in order to somehow impress her boss and gain a promotion. In retaliation, Mrs Ganush inflicts a curse on Christine, transforming her simple life into a living hell.
br /
br /Is it cheesy? Yes. But is that unintentional? No.
br /
br /As always with Raimi's films (Evil Dead, Spider Man, etc) the action comes thick and fast to an almost cartoon-like extent, with a hint of the very darkest of comedy. Some scenes are so incredibly shocking you'll be confused at whether to laugh or to scream- either way you'll be hysterical on many occasions.
br /
br /This is what Raimi does best: His ability to genuinely shock on such a regular basis is something that many modern horror directors should be jealous of. In Drag Me To Hell, he does this in a number of various ways. The score -of which he co-wrote- is a large element of his success, as are the special effects; but most of all: The completely horrific and totally insane ideas!
br /
br /There's only one word to describe someone who can make talking demon goats, projectile nosebleeds and living eyeballs in birthday cake genuinely scary... That word is genius.
br /
br /Also, performances are generally quite good; damsel in distress Alison Lohman does a decent job in an admittedly very difficult role and the ever-reliable Justin Long is great in playing her nerdy boyfriend. I have to hand it to old Lorna Raver, however, who successfully scares the balls off you as the bony faced, black toothed, frosty eyed and truly frightening Mrs Ganush.
br /
br /I could go on forever about how much I loved Drag Me To Hell, but in summery, this is exactly what Sam Raimi fans have been waiting for all these years. There's enough shocks, scares and crazy ideas to ensure that you'll laugh and scream in equal measure.
br /
br /Spread the word: Drag Me To Hell is not only Sam Raimi's new masterpiece, but the most awesomely entertaining horror film of the year. Watch it if you're after a damn good time.

a fantastic horror film! July 6, 2009 Mr. R. W. Graham (Lincoln, U.K.) 13 out of 17 found this review helpful
drag me to hell is quite frankly one of the best films of the year. trashy as hell and it knows it too, really silly, very tongue in cheek, though a great cast are playing it completely straight with superb special effects and a fantastic twist at the end that leaves you crying out for a sequel. don't take any of it seriously and you should have loads of fun with this. entertaining, well made and original, this is director sam raimi returning to his horror roots.
The best horror film of 2009 September 3, 2009 KM (England) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
You've got to love Sam Raimi! His SPIDERMAN trilogy has to be the best in the superhero genre, the EVIL DEAD trilogy are cult classics and are the best in the comedy/horror genre and now this - DRAG ME TO HELL, an original story where a girl named Christine (Alison Lohman) refuses an old gypsy woman a bank loan which in return she is cursed. For the next 3 nights she will be visited by the Devil before she is taken to Hell.
br /
br /It begins as quite a serious film really, there are plenty of scares, a good and unpredictable storyline and then even more scares. The final part of the film is quite tongue-in-cheek giving homage to the EVIL DEAD films, which if you have seen you will see a lot of similarities that will please any fan. There isn't much gore but there are enough disgusting bits as well as quick shocks and jumps that most horror fans will love this. I myself found it very well made with some excellent acting from both Alison Lohman and Justin Long. It is a little far-fetched at times but doesn't fail to stop the excitement and thrills for the whole duration.
br /
br /This is definitely one of the best horrors of the year so far and I will definitely be buying it when it is released. I never usually wish for this but I hope there is a sequel!

Total Trashy Brilliance! June 28, 2009 willow (The Universe) 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
`Drag Me to Hell' is in my opinion one of the best American horror movies in recent years.
br /The movie is about loans official Christine (newcomer Alison Lohman who clearly has great potential). After refusing an extension on a loan for an old woman named Mrs. Ganush, the vile old bag puts a curse on her.
br /The movie gets off on extreme gross-out humour psychological scares.
br /I personally would much rather be stabbed than have someone vomit in my mouth (okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit) if you are the same then you are guaranteed to get that adrenaline fuelled rush from watching this films (as you should from watching most good horror movies.)
br /
br /Unlike a lot of horror movies `Drag Me to Hell' manages to garner the audience's sympathies for Christine; who is we learn from very early on in the film a really nice girl the fact that she was a former `fat girl' increases our sympathies. This makes us want to root for her, which I think is a rare quality in a horror movie, generally I am happy to see dumb American teenagers getting killed off in brutal ways because of their lack of likeability. Another admirable aspect of the film is the character Clay (Justin Long), Christine's supportive boyfriend. Instead of thinking she's a total nut case he stands by her through all her trials tribulations.
br /
br /Even if you don't find `Drag Me to Hell' as frightening as most critics claimed you will, I can guarantee to all those who are fans of the comedy-horror genre you will at least be extremely well entertained by it.
br /
br /In conclusion a very entertaining movie that is essential viewing for all horror fans.
br /If you liked 'Shaun of The Dead', 'Eden Lake' Resident Evil' you will love this.

At last, a horror film that's actually scary! July 24, 2009 N. Burgess 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
These days horror movies generally employ 2 different ways of scaring the audience. The easiest and hence most widely used way is the cheap "it's behind you" type scene that succeeds in making the audience jump, but it's a cheap scare and only lasts a few moments. The second way is much harder to pull-off, and very rare in Hollywood these days. This is where a scene or sequence of events happens that is genuinely chilling, it taps into your primal fears and leaves you with a haunting feeling that still lingers even when the movie's finished. Drag Me To Hell very much falls into this latter school of horror, there are some scenes in this film that will scare the wits out of you.
br /
br /The beauty of this film is that it never takes itself too seriously or gets overly pompous like many 'serious' horrors sometimes can. Sam Raimi knows his art inside out and throws in plenty of moments that are so gross-out horrible that they actually provide a bit of black comedy to lighten things up. I won't give too much away other than say you'll be amazed at what revolting things can somehow end up in someone's mouth, anyone who remembers the "eyeball in mouth" scene in Evil Dead 2 will know what I mean, except Raimi takes this even further!
br /
br /Raimi's genius is that he balances the gags with the serious moments perfectly. Just when you've finished laughing at some insanely over the top scene and your guard is down, you'll suddenly be confronted with an absolutely terrifying moment that you never saw coming that will scare you to the core.
br /
br /Believe me, nothing in this film is predictable! Sam Raimi throws out all the old horror cliches and shows Hollywood how to make a proper horror film.
