Just an average guy October 27, 2009 technoguy (Rugby) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a bit of a one track film.It goes back 3 years into Julien's past.He is a happily married teacher with a lovely boy. While he(Vincent Lindon)is passionately in love with his wife Lisa(Dianne Kruger) their home is broken into by police. She is arrested and taken away for the murder of her boss. She was at the wrong place at the wrong time and was brushed up against by the murderer. She was found washing blood out of her coat when the police arrested her and was known to have argued with her boss on the day of the murder. She is sentenced to 20 years in prison and Julien making appeals on her behalf, after 3 years has provided no more evidence, although this average mild-mannered man believes she is innocent. He is so single-minded he is not side tracked by a single mother he meets in the park.Lisa is diabetic and due to the growing distance between her and her son, becomes suicidal and refuses to take her insulin.Julien embarks on a mission so perilous it will risk the lives of everyone he loves:he will stop at nothing to daringly break her out of prison. He arranges to see an expert in prison breaking, Pasquet, to garner ideas:he says you have to be a criminal to try or you'll get burned."Escaping is easy, the hard part is staying free".You'll need lots of cash and good ID.And find the key.He gets involved with some shady, underworld characters, wanting fake IDs and passports. He is beaten up by street criminals, but eventually secures fake passports and a license. He builds up wall charts and maps, telling neither his wife or parents. This builds up the sense of surprise and tension. He has many affecting bonding scenes with his son,who he has to bring up alone. His relationship with his father is distant. He can't sit back and watch Lisa die and his son needs his mother.Due to her poor results Lisa gets transferred to a clinic by escort in 3 days.He leaves Oscar at his parents, kidnaps a drugs-pusher and gets him to take him to a drug-trafficker's house, who he kills in a shoot-out and gets his cash pile.He follows Lisa on her transfer and escapes with her from the clinic. They set out again with Oscar closely pursued by the police. This is an excellent edge -of -your-seat thriller, well acted by the Belmondo-like Lindon and the anguished Kruger with some impressive cameo parts like the inspector, the prison-break ex-cop,the brother. The cinematography catches the seamy side of north Parisian streets ,withimpressive framing. If you liked Tell No One,you'll love this.He was just an average guy...oh yeah?

Engaging, well-paced French thriller. A must see! December 28, 2009 Looking for the good life (Surrey, UK) Enjoyed this film immensely. A superb thriller, immediately engaging and wonderfully paced. I thought both Lindon and Kruger performed wonderfully. I know some people really don't enjoy watching subtitled films, so if you fall into that category this may not be for you (French with English subtitles), otherwise I HIGHLY recommend Anything For Her.

br /I have seen another review posted here which awarded two stars and complained about holes in the plot (where did he get the gun and why did he leave details of his escape plan on the wall for the police to find), but please note well the comments that have been posted in direct response to this review! These questions ARE answered in the film. :-)

br /The film is really focused on the husband's struggle for his family and is not a courtroom drama which lingers on the question of her innocence; I think this is worth noting in light of another review here.
br /
br /I'm not one for long reviews I'm afraid, but hope that this balances/answers some questions raised by some of the less enthusiastic reviews for this film.
Anything For Her January 11, 2010 RJS (Winchester) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a solid French production, with an original storyline that is well acted. A brief synopsis: A woman is wrongly imprisoned for a murder she did not commit and her husband, fearing that she will commit suicide, hatches a plot to break her out and for them and their child to escape and re-start their lives abroad. Over the course of the film he meticulously plans the break-out whilst caring for their young son. Due to his wife being moved to another prison, he has to bring forward the break-out earlier than planned and this leads to a couple of extra twists.

br /The final 20-25 minutes aside, I wouldn't necessarily regard this as being an 'edge of your seat' thriller, but it certainly holds the attention. Despite what another reviewer has written, there are no holes in the plot and the identity of who is responsible for the murder is totally irrelevant.

br /I'm expecting a Hollywood remake of this within the next couple of years. Denzil Washington and Eva Mendes will play the two leads and, in true Hollywood fashion, there'll be plenty of death and destruction and a few explosions thrown in for good effect...

Not French cinema's finest hour December 6, 2009 Le Blaireau (UK) I'm broadly in agreement with the previous reviewer who described this film as "uninspired". Like him, I was dissatisfied by
br /
br /1) a plot which did indeed stretch credibility to extremes, the police were so incompetent, they could have been straight out of Da Vinci Code,
br /
br /2) I also found it strange that the plot line of the actual killer wasn't followed through - it was almost as if it was something originally in the movie and then later scenes were deleted. But leaving references in the film did lead to expectations that this line would play a part in the denouement - OK you could argue that it's a plot device to throw you off the actual ending, but without saying anything about how the film actually ends, it's not as though you're left in any doubt of the direction in which it's going !
br /
br /3) I found the character development of the male lead character unsatisfying. However desperate the guy might have been, I didn't feel that he convincingly displayed the path from normal guy to where he ended up - it was all a little too sudden for me. Yes, ordinary people can do unlikely things - one thinks of the Michael Douglas film Falling Down where all of a sudden it's all too much for him and he cracks - but I didn't feel that this was handled convincingly.
br /
br /Having said all that, the film chugged along reasonably entertainingly, the points above were minor annoyances but not show stoppers - basically I've seen a lot better films, but equally a lot worse too !! So three stars it is then - keeping the average where it currently stands !
Uninspired November 16, 2009 Ian Thumwood (Winchester) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
There are plenty of instances where French thrillers are right on the button but this one is pretty poor and stretches credibility to the extreme. Notwithstanding the fact that there are few thrills and the overall plot lacks excitement, I found this film totally implausible , not particularly well acted and , most disappointingly, there looked like being a twist at the end which failed to materialise. So much of this film is unsatisfactory. It was never explained why the lead character had a gun even though he was a school teacher, why he should have decided to arrange a prison break and leave all the clues necessary for his arrest pinned to his wall and, most unforgiveable, who actually killed his wife's boss. Don't think I can ever recall seeing a thriller with so many holes. This made the grossly over-rated "Tell no-one" seem like a masterpiece by comparison.
br /
br / Watch something like "The beat that my heart skipped" or "Mesrine" if you want to know how a thriller should be done. Little better than an American TV movie.
