A proper Greatest Hits collection September 26, 2009 Mr. Paul Hancock-french (Nuneaton, England) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Now this is better than the CD version, for numerous reasons. Finally, the 'unholy trinity' of unreleased video promos for Erotica, Justify My Love and Deeper and Deeper make it to DVD. Also, some gems from the early part of her career, Burning Up, Crazy For You, Live To Tell, Into the Groove, etc. Also, the longer version of Express Yourself with the Shep Pettibone backing. Admittedly, not a full collection with some obvious omissions, like Fever, Bad Girl, Oh Father, Drowned World, American Life - so will have to keep my Immaculate Collection and Video Collection, but hey, small grumble. Fantastic package, great picture and sound. Is currently on endless play in my house. A timely reminder of why she is, and always will be, the Queen Of Pop.
5 Stars for LIVE TO TELL, TRUE BLUE, WHO'S THAT GIRL, but... October 1, 2009 Frankie (England) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
When I first watched the DVD Collection, a week or so ago I was so angry that I only wanted to give it 1 Star, I was too upset to write anything, but now after watching it around 5 times I have changed my mind, appreciate it more and I am listing the god and the bad.
br /
br /The good:
br /It's simply amazing that Warner has released this almost complete collection of Madonna's work as a video artist.
br /It includes (I believe) 27 (!!!) videos that have never been released on DVD before! I became a fan when I was 12 in 1986 when Papa Don't Preach was in the charts! I am a 80's freak and having prev. unreleased videos like BURNING UP, INTO THE GROOVE,LIVE TO TELL,TRUE BLUE on one DVD makes me so happy and reminds me of my teenage years, when it was a big event, seeing a Madonna video on TV! I never ever thought we would see them released! So 5 stars for that! They are divine! Madonna looks so beautiful in them and I adore the songs! Also finally Erotica which is one of my faves!
br /The sound is brilliant, definately remastered. I have a surround system and it feels like being in a club.
br /It's 47 video clips (she's won so many Grammy's and MTV awards for them), almost 4 hours, it very good value for money.
br /There is an alternative video for "Get Together" which I have never seen before! It's superb, better then the animated one and the video for "Miles Away" is very cute with clips from her Sticky and Sweet Tour, did not even know it was official.
br /
br /The bad:
br /it said in the official statements and on the album CD about the DVD "digitally remastered and all restored from the original tapes"!
br /One would think Warner would have digitally removed dust, scratches etc from the tapes, made them sharper, clearer, enhanced picure quality, better colour etc. Unfortunately the videos on DVD1 look more like VHS, it is a shame! I am watching them on a 32" LCD HD TV and it's too grainy, too many pixels. Videos like "Like A Virgin" and "Cherish" are kind of blurry. "Secret" picture quality is 50% lower then on "93:99" and "I Want You" is like TV with bad reception, a ghost image of Madonna following her. Recent Videos that were shot in 16:9/HD are squeezed into format 4:3, which results in having big black bars at the Top, bottom and right and left side, so 50% of my big TV screen is black.
br /They used single layer discs (DVD-5) instead of dual layer discs (DVD-9). I burn DVD's myself and I know that a 4.7 DVD holds only 1 hour in High Quality. With pcm stereo and Dolby surround, they used a lot of space and it's nearly 2 hours anyway, so the picture is compressed and has lower quality.
br /WHY IS THERE NO BLU-RAY without any compression?? Other female singers like Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Mylene Farmer etc have all Blu-ray's, but not Madonna??? She is the most sucessful of them all!
br /"Justify My Love" was supposed to have "Unedited, prev. unseen footage" as promised. So I was expecting deleted scenes, Director's Cut, alternative version or whatever! At least the original! How dare they put a big black bar over some tiny nipples, it ruins the video. I bought the uncensored VHS Video single 18 years ago and anyone can download it on itunes uncensored by now. I don't think 8year olds are buying this DVD and there is nothing pornographic about it! This is 2009 and not 1990!
br /The backcover of the DVD looks cheap and tacky, nothing like the CD album. I can design something like that on my PC in 5min.
br /Last but not least: DVD2 is 15min longer than DVD1, why was there no room for masterpieces directed by David "VOGUE" Fincher on DVD1?? I mean "Oh Father" "Bad Girl"! Or even USA No1 + UK No3 "THIS USED TO BE MY PLAYGOUND", all amazing videos!??? Obviously, to make fans still buy the "Immaculate Collecton", "93:99" and "A league of their own" DVD's.
br /Conclusion: I adore this Video collection, but it could have been done better as a true tribute to the Queen of Pop and her millions of fans and if it would have been encrusted with gold I would have been happy to pay more. I can't believe that is it, after all the hype. But I truely love every single video.
Perfect DVD for any fan! October 10, 2009 Anthony Mark Hemingway (Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I would to say, I dont get what people are actually complaining about with this DVD. The picture is great. Fans should be more greatful really, we have every video released now, spread across this new DVD and the Immaculate Collection and 93:99. We finally have True Blue, Whos That Girl, Burning Up, Erotica.....
br /
br /I agree the artwork leaves a lot to be desired, does look a little "bootleggy".
br /
br /The sound is fantastic, the ratio is spot on, for me i found no problems at all.
br /
br /People are too demanding now.
br /
br /When i read the views i imagined this DVD to be pixelated and grainy, but unless its just my copy, it looks great :p.
br /
br /Enjoy.
A good chronological retrospective of Madonna's career September 27, 2009 Andrew Hughes (Sheffield, UK) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a pretty complete collection of Madonna's videos, including some that were omitted from the Immaculate Collection (Burning Up, Crazy for You, Into the Groove, Live to Tell, True Blue) and the Video Collection 93:99 (Justify My Love, Erotica, Deeper and Deeper, I'll Remember, I Want You, You'll See) and those since they were released (American Pie right up to Celebration). Unlike Celebration on CD, the tracks are arranged in chronological order and some notable omissions from the CD version are included here, such as 'True Blue' and 'Deeper and Deeper'. The most obvious omission is 'American Life', which doesn't appear on either collection. The video itself is noted for being banned by Madonna herself and replaced by a rather drab version with her singing in front of some flags. As it doesn't appear here, when a number of other controversial videos ('Justify My Love', 'Erotica') do, it seems unlikely it will ever be released on DVD which is a shame. There are also a number of singles missing, such as those from the Erotica period ('Bad Girl', 'Fever'), 'Love Don't Live Here Anymore' and 'Nothing Really Matters', which were on the Video Collection 93:99 along with 'Oh Father' which appeared on the Immaculate Collection.
br /
br /All in all, it's a very good selection, much better than that for the CD, but if you really want every Madonna video you'll need to make some other purchases as well (especially if you want her appearance in the video for 'Me Against the Music' by Britney Spears...)
