Gripping Stuff September 29, 2009 Mr. S. Littleford (Manchester, UK) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I saw this film on Sunday in central London, the acting was brilliant and the plot was gripping despite not having seen the first film we were on the edge of our seats throughout. The camera shots and all the techy stuff was superb and the acting was magnificent. Well worth watching and a credit to all those involved.

'The Departed' meets 'Sin City' - Impressive British Noir September 26, 2009 Filmfan 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I saw this last night at the cinema and I'm glad it's out on dvd soon as I'm going to get it and watch it again. I thought for an independent low-budget feature, this was a considerably impressive effort. It may not have the money of Sin City - which is clearly an influence for the graphic novels and the films - but they have worked with whatever they had to achieve great production values.
br /
br /The opening is a massive nod to its graphic novel roots before bringing us into a slightly more recognisable setting but still retaining its noir elements. Scot Simon Phillips is perfectly cast as the everyman-leading man. It's a nice touch that the "name" in the film, Danny Dyer, supports here rather than leads and the predominantly un-famous cast means that we're seeing characters rather than actors laying characters. That said, the two big names, Dyer and David O'Hara, put in often scene-stealing appearances.
br /
br /Larger that-life in some parts, the characters are clearly based on the graphic novel approach where everything can be in your face, and it works. Ashlie Walker impresses as the sexy psycho seeking to usurp Daddy and Terry Stone is a combination of menacing and funny as the Guv'nor's second in command, `The Fixer'. It's also impressive that we've finally seen a British gangster film with very strong female characters. Rebecca Keatley and Rita Ramnani provide the "good" to Walkers "bad" and achieve convincingly naturalistic performances.
br /
br /There are certainly elements of other gangster and noir films. References to the Big Combo, Reservoir Dogs, Sin City, Pulp Fiction and Get Carter abound, but nothing seems lifted, more occasionally treading were others have already tread (thought this isn't always a bad thing). The plot's MacGuffin - a box with mysterious and never-explained contents - is a film staple seen in Ronin and Pulp Fiction, but this is merely a device to propel events forward. The voiceover is of course classic noir - but it's refreshing to hear it as we see London streets rather than American ones.
br /
br /I can't think of another British film that has even attempted noir in recent years, let alone adapting elements from a graphic novel, and this is a very worthy effort.
SIMPLY...STUNNING October 23, 2009 Lou Almighty 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
On the gangster movie genre the British are what the French are in the horror genre...
br /Along with my absolute favorite in this genre RISE OF THE FOOTSOLDIER, JACK SAID stands above anything that has ever been made before (and this includes SCARFACE).
br /
br /The acting is brilliant, especially the outstanding performances of Simon Phillips as the lead and Ashlie Walker.
br /
br /The photography is brilliant, the past being shot in color, while the present is in black and white.
br /
br /There are strong echoes of SIN CITY, but this is far better and more serious, dwelling less on action and violence but focusing more on the story, which makes it superior in my opinion.
br /
br /I haven't seen JACK SAYS yet, which is supposed to take place after JACK SAID, but it is definitely going to be the next movie I'll buy and I am certainly going to buy JACK FALLS.
br /
br /I hope ther's going to be a lot more British gangster films, which hopefully are equally brilliant. The talents are certainly there!
Amazing New British Film October 18, 2009 G. Day This new gangster thriller is british film noir is at it's best. The raw and gritty cinematography complements the action and Danny Dyer and Simon Phillips command the leads roles with precision whilst still allowing for the story line to take its own direction. 2009's Best British Film by a long way!
Must see British film.... October 19, 2009 Princess Adora After seeing the film "Jack Says", out last year, I was so excited about the prequel "Jack Said" coming out and in my opinion, it did not disappoint and exceeded all my expectations! Some even more fab acting from Simon Phillips (Jack) in this gritty film noir with the character "Jack" being up to his neck even deeper with the gangland underworld, making him almost out of his in depth with his torrent double life as an undercover police officer and gangland member in the film. With this comes more violence and a virile, aggressive Jack that we haven't seen before! This creates more action, fighting, guns and explosions which is always good in an action packed film! Also starring Danny Dyer, the cockney East End geezer, what more could you want from a Brtish film! This Gritty, dark film noir has just the right amount of action, explosiveness, drama, humour and tragedy. Its unusual to see a gang boss played by a female but Ashlie Walker "Natalie" really pulled it off and knows how to keep the boys in check! David O'Hara, "The Boss" has a fitting role and has been given many accolades for his performances and with Jimmy White's acting debut was pure genius!
br /
br /This adaptation of a graphic novel has been very well done and with the delights of fantastic acting, writing and directing, this is what British films are all about... I can't wait for "Jack Falls" to come out on DVD next year but in the meantime will be buying the graphic novel as a sneak peek and I am sure that we will hear much more from lead actor Simon Phillips in the future! Definitely worth buying! 10/10, Loved it!
