Amazon.co.uk Review With his interminable search for the right vintage guitar, the exact valve amp, it's tempting to see Lenny Kravitz--for all his much-vaunted cool--as something of a trainspotter: pastiche-rock's closet nerd. In fact, the least that can be said of him is that he's consistent in his obsessions. As single-minded (he plays virtually every instrument here) as he is deliberately anachronistic, Kravitz sincerely believes that rock peaked, as an artistic force, in the late 1960s, and has consequently devoted his entire career to recreating that particular period and sensibility. As ever, his sources are impeccable: from Sly The Family Stone ("Freedom Train"), to the Beatles-esque string arrangement that propels "I Build This Garden For Us"; even his drumming recalls Ringo Starr--just as his vocals bring to mind the raw, emotionally ravaged McCartney of "Oh Darling". Still, he's redeemed--at least in part--by the surprising appeal of his own compositions: derivative they may be, but they're also decent rock and roll songs, albeit in a very classic vein. --IAndrew McGuire/i

This is REAL Lenny Kravitz..... March 21, 2006 shimmytastic (Manchester) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Having been a huge fan of Lenny Kravitz for years and years, I can safely say I will never get bored of this album. The mood it evokes still never fails to take me to another place and another time - providing an aura never quite matched in later albums (even if many of them are technically better). The title track has become an anthem in itself, never fails to seal the ambience at any of his gigs and is certainly one of his very best tracks ever. "Be" just excellent and is SO Lenny - his individuality really shines out here, as it does in the funky "Cab Driver" and "Flower Child". Hurrah for feather boas and silver flares.
An Absolute Classic! April 13, 2003 mark (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
this album is by far the finest work that lenny has ever produced. like with all his other recordings he plays nearly every instrument on every track. from the genius of Let Love Rule (love the sax solo) to the controversial Does Anybody Out There Even Care, he breaks all musical boundaries in his effort to express himself. No genre is left out of this masterpiece. Unfortunately Lenny has not been able to match the brilliance he has shown on this album, with any of his later efforts. All of which seem to fall short of the high standard he set himself with this recording. brThis album is an absolute must for any ardent Kravitz fan.brBUY IT NOW!
a favourite album for 20 years March 1, 2009 Paul Davies (Swindon, Wiltshire United Kingdom) this is a gritty well composed and natural album. It has rarely been out of my personal playlist since I first owned it on cassette. Essential Lenny Kravitz and well worth buying if you are a new fan looking for his roots
The First Cut Is The Deepest March 26, 2009 Rossen Mladenov (Zurich, Switzerland) How to review this masterpiece?
br /Simply Lenny at his best, before commerce got more into his art.
br /Natural, emotional, analog, humane, touching - in other word: brilliant.
A timeless classic July 30, 2007 Conolly Gage Esq (London, England) Was given this album on tape when it first came out and loved it, although as technology moved on I never replaced the tape for CD until just recently. Wow!!! I had forgotten how good this album really is. My favourite tracks are "Let Love Rule" which then segways in to "Freedom Train". Worth the purchase price for just those two tracks alone. However that's not the whole story, the production is truly brilliant and harkens back to another time with a slightly different take. That Lenny Kravitz not only wrote, preformed all the instruments (except for the odd exception) and produced every track is the mark of genius. Still one of his best albums, if not the best so far. In short if you're a Lenny Kravitz fan and have not got this album already...get it because you wont be disappointed.
