5 out of 5 stars Live/For Earth Below is the best of Robin Trower   February 21, 2001

I first saw Robin Trower on The Old Grey Whistle Test in the early seventies. Robin may not be a pretty face, but man could he play guitar! He isn't everyone's favourite,.....but I have to say that his music is very listenable. There are many good tunes in his repertoire, with the melody played through his virtuoso guitar work. As a drummer I greatly respect Bill Lordan, although Jim Dewar, bassist and vocalist, is somewhat quieter. The two albums combined here date from around 1973. The live set recorded in Stockholm to a respectful audience. For Earth Below was recorded in LA and represents a much cleaner, slicker sound. I'm not sure the live set features his best work, but for pure honesty there is no better rock guitarist and this set exemplifies this. There are no tricks or overdubs and the straight white noise sound is exactly as you'd hear them live. Rock me baby is one long, loud blistering guitar solo delivered with the power of an Olympus jet engine, showcasing Trower's undiluted technical nouse. For Earth Below however is a different piece, a quieter, more considered work, combining the cool West coast sound with Trower's teechnical brilliance. The former Procul Harum guitarist is a gifted songwriter and suffers from his place in history amidst the much maligned rock dinosaurs. Like so much of the seventies pop/rock product many fine songs and musicianship has been thrown out with the bathwater. This CD shows Trower as he appears in concert and brings you one of his most sophisticated studio albums. It's an exhillarating combination, with tunes of real depth. I think Trower is an unsung genius and this album a real gem..... discover it yourself and you'll keep playing it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Not just another Hendrix clone   November 2, 2007

Robin Trower was dismissed by the music critics of the day as just another Hendrix clone. This was, and is, nonsense. Although the influences are quite clear, Trower has his own style and this shines through best on the live album. Trower Live represents some of the best blues/rock guitar you`ll ever and unlike Hendrix, Trower is still playing today. By the way, Jimmy Dewar remains one of the greatest rock vocalists ever. RIP Jimmy.

The track "Fine Day" epitomises the long hot summer of 1976. I was 16 just doing my exams, i was a smart alec kid who was into Purple, Sabbath,ELP, Yes,Genesis,Mahavishnu,Caravan,Zepp,Camel,The Tain, Rory Gallagher,a great Smorgesbjord of fantastic music, but my own favourite was Robin Trower. I put on any of his albums of the time and I allow the music to transport me back to that time, I cannot begin to explain how profound an experience it always is.

5 out of 5 stars This guy is incredible!   August 20, 2008

Incredible is a lot to live up to but its true. Robin and friends the trio, laid down a template that begs belief, this stratocaster is controlled like a third arm. its so natural ,flowing ,teased, wrung, taunted, just the way we like it!If I could add `Bridge of sighs` the great studio album before, `For earth below` we would have `The Best Triple Album In The World`.. enjoy it as quick as you can.
