4 out of 5 stars What's so bad about this?   October 22, 2009
D. J. H. Thorn (Hull, UK)
Oh dear, he really upset the Kiss fans, didn't he? I was never a big fan of the band, but someone once lent me the solo albums and I was pleasantly surprised by them. In Gene Simmons's case, I guess not being a Kiss fan helps. Subtlety may not be a strong point, but there are some imaginative twists on this album. 'See You Tonite' for instance is a strong, melodic acoustic-based track and there are several other strong tunes across the album among the more standard rock numbers. Despite a reputation for perpetrating disco horrors here, dancefloor influences are slight at most. Then there's the string section, but it's hardly intrusive. The closing lullaby doesn't suit him, but I can forgive Simmons that. The disillusion among fellow reviewers that he isn't the lord of the flies after all though, is somewhat amusing. Were Kiss ever anything more than a tongue in cheek hard rock band? I don't think so. This is no classic, only just four stars, but it's all right by me.

3 out of 5 stars The God of Thunder chills out...   June 18, 2003

... and, as it turns out, Gene Simmons is a romantic old so and so! After all, not many Rock Gods could get away with crooning "When You Wish Upon a Star" on their solo album!br Seriously, though, while none of the KISS solo albums come close to the band in their pomp, Simmons' album demonstrates a more 'pop' sensibility than you might expect, given his image. When "Radioactive" was released as a single, it came on 'radioactive red' vinyl with a free cardboard cutout mask! Unfortunately you don't get any of that with the CD of the album, but that's progress for you...brPure '70s glitz, with Simmons' (infamous) tongue firmly in his cheek!

3 out of 5 stars Most varied and surprising solo album falls short   January 28, 2004

Gene Simmons solo album was widely regarded as the most different and varied of KISSes solo efforts. Instead of the cartoony heavy metal he had previously peddled with KISS, fans were surprised to see softer side to the blood dribbling bass demon.br Opener "Radioactive" begins with a mock operatic entrance with chants of "Satan!" adding to a sinister atmosphere, but shocks by breaking into a groovy 60's inspired song, with foxy female bakcing vocals and a nice solo provided by none other than Aerosmiths Joe Perry. After another bizarre intro, "Burning up with Fever" is a funky number with more soulful backing singers and "See you Tonite" is Simmons's own tribute to the Beatles, a nice poppy number reminiscient of mid-60's Lennon and McCartney compositions. br Songs like "Tunnel of Love" and "Living in Sin", although undoubtedly catchy are lacking somewhat in the punch that his songs with KISS displayed. Other songs like "Man of 1,000 Faces" and "Mr Make Believe" show that Simmons does have a softer side, with their crooned vocals, childrens choirs and string arrangements, but seem a little lethargic at this point in the album. "See you in your Dreams", a remake of a KISS song off of "Rock n' Roll Over" is a more classic rock number featuring Cheap Tricks Rick Nielson on lead guitar, and some more bakcing singers. The album ends on a strange note with a cover of the Disney theme "When you Wish upon a Star" sung with Simmons own inimitable style - finishing a bizarre album on a suitably bizarre note.

3 out of 5 stars time off from the day job....   December 22, 2008
mr blackwell (scotland)
it never ceases to amaze me the negativity towards this disc,if you didnt like it on vinyl - why rebuy it on cd?,this is a far better disc than most of the previous reviewers will admit, the lord of the wasteland is true to himself and produces a variety of styles, beatles pastiche, pop and some rock, the ego obviously overloaded and a multitude of stars appear and dilute the disc somewhat, but heh thats simmons whole mantra!!!,take the blinkers off and appreciate some quality 70's rock from a megastar trust me there are more bloated albums out there than this!!.

1 out of 5 stars God of Chunder!!   September 10, 2004

I agree with the previous reviewer. I bought this record on the strength of Kiss gems like, Sweet Pain, Flaming Youth, and God of Thunder. I really believed that Gene Simmons was the lord of the waste land, a modern day man of steel, I even believed he had the night time to please him and that he commanded people to kneel. But that was all lies. After hearing this, I felt cheated, lied to and used. I can no longer bring myself to play with my Kiss pinball machine!
