Amazon.co.uk Review Probably Def Leppard's best album and certainly their most successful, IHysteria/I pretty much sums up 1980s hard rock: catchy, tuneful and fun. It's also one of the few albums from the period that doesn't sound dated now, and singles such as "Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Armageddon It" and "Rocket" remain staples of rock radio. The rest of the album is equally entertaining; "Animal" and "Hysteria", while mid-tempo, have the same slick intensity, and "Love Bites" is one of the few pop-metal ballads that doesn't sound saccharine over a decade after its release. Possibly Def Leppard's best album,'Hysteria' contains 7 UK/US hit singles.brThis album is like 'Star Wars' for the ears with it's crisp clear lead guitars, crunchy riffs, electronic drums and it's multi-layered backing vocals.brA perfect introduction to Def Leppard.brBuy it.
Simply Hysterical about Hysteria February 9, 2003 J. Maher (Rochdale , Lancs, UK) 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
Def Leppard's finest work and one of the greatest rock albums of all time. I have had the album since it's release in 1987 and I still play it and never grow tired of it. It's to Def Leppard's credit that they made this album.brIt's an album that nearly was never made Rick Allen the drummer lost an arm in a car accident after the success of Pyromania, disagrements with producers, scrapping songs plus other mishaps but when all seem lost enter their white knight Robert John "Mutt" Lange who helped put the band's confidence back together, contributed to the songwriting and produced what can be best described as the most polished clinically clear rock album that has ever been made.pThe songs are just wonderfully catchy from the opening bars of Women to the heart churning Love and Affection. This album produced 6 hit singles in the UK now that is highly unusual from a Rock album and 7 hit singles in the band's spiritual home the USA even though they orginally from Shefield UK.pThe album hit no1 on both sides of the Atlantic. So many classic tunes on the album you will be listening to them for years. The clever sexual inuendo lyrics of Animal, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Armageddon It! But the best track and probably the greatest song they've writtten is the clever 'Gods Of War' a damming indicment back in the late 80's of Reagan and Thatcher's lust for conflict with Libiya.brNow the song's clever lyrics and addition of Reagan and Thatcher's voices add gravitas to the track. Now you could quite easily substitute both for Dubya and Blair Iraq for Libiya.brJust lie back close your eyes and enjoy this superb piece of Rock masterclass.
An album you will never grow tired of March 27, 2002 M. D. Rathbone (Runcorn, Cheshire - UK) 18 out of 23 found this review helpful
Forget Thriller, Bat out of Hell, Sgt Pepper, Brothers in Arms, The Wall, etc, etc - THIS IS THE GREATEST EVER ALBUM!pIt's got everything.. catchy hit singles (Animal, Rocket, Pour Some Sugar on Me) rock anthems (Gods of War, Hysteria) pure fun and enjoyment (Women, Armageddon it) and even a love song! (Love Bites)pNever mind the fact that this is a great intro to Def Lep, this is a great intro to music! So spoil yourself because once you've played this no other album will ever come close as far as lyrics, harmonies, musical ability, layered production or sheer quality go!!!!
Best album of all time! July 5, 2002 K. D. H. Miles (UK) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I first heard this album in 1988 when I was 13. I played it over and over and over (and finally scratched the record). Since I have worn the tape out and had the CD in my car. Basically I have been listening to this album for 14 years on a regular basis, and I never get bored of it. Every single track is a masterpiece (each song took weeks/months to create - hence the 4 year production and multi-million dollar cost to create it).pIf you are a metal, rock or pop fan you will love this album, go treat yourself you will not be disappointed - 20 million people can't be wrong!!!
Well worth the wait January 30, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Hysteria was the first rock album I purchased after hearing Animal. I wasn't disappointed! Gods of War is also a big favourite - much heavier than the rest of the songs. If you are going to start a Leppard collection - pick this one!
