All Hail the AntiChrist Superstar June 15, 2000 philip@robertlees.freeserve.co.uk (Birmingham, England) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I do not pay much attention to the stigma that one has come to associate upon hearing the name Marilyn Manson. To say he and 'evil' are synonymous is a bold statement and a complete matter of opinion. To be quite honest I don't care what the man chooses to get up to on stage, all I know is that I have discovered (for myself) that Marilyn Manson is an extraodinary music writer and artist, a fact that AntiChrist Superstar makes evident. While listening to the album one can not help but to embark upon its journey. Every song is a confession and a story within itself and they are all so compelling that you find it difficult to hit the stop button on your stereo. My overall view of ACSS is that it is very informative in an evasive kind of way. Mr Manson is making a statement with each song and having a great amount of fun whilst doing so. It is a very angry, creepy (not to mention 'Anti', obviously!) album with some fantastic sounds, gut-gripping rock tunes and lyrics that will make you stop and think about things for a while. That is, at least, how the album appears on face value, on another level it's actually very deep. Listen to the songs while reading the inlay booklet and you'll discover a deeper message: Ostensibly implying a transmogrify from 'worm' to 'angel', and why not, christians believe in being born-again into a higher spiritual state, maybe Marilyn Manson is speaking about his own higher state. After reading other reviews it appears to be unanimous that 'Man That you Fear' is the real high point of the album, and I would certainly agree, however, the song does not over-shadow the rest of them. One of my favorites is the techno/rock sound of 'Deformography', or the sheer power of 'The Reflecting God' in both its words and music, or the out-and-out creepiness of 'Kinderfeld' and the all time classic heaviness of songs like, 'Irresponsible Hate Anthem', '1996' and 'Angel with the Scabbed Wings'. I could rant on about every song but all the reviews in the world will never capture this albums vision or quality. Buy it if you like heavy-rock per say or if you're into deep philosphical lyrics, on all levels Antichrist Superstar is an all compelling, intriguing and totally fascinating album.

Any serious critique of the history of Grand Guignol must
br /surely take the mind of Mr Manson into account.
br /1996' 'Antichrist Superstar' digs around in some very dark
br /places indeed and this from a man used to digging darkly.
br /
br /Decay, madness, dissolution, gristle and blood and bone.
br /Polymorphous perversity by the bucket load.
br /
br /And what jolly good fun it is too !
br /
br /Mr Manson, both with his music and personae creates a healthy balance,
br /a veritable antidote, in holding up a mirror to the hypocritical,
br /slimy, white underbelly of New American Puritanism.
br /
br /This splendid music has a coherence sometimes absent from his work
br /both pre and post 'Antichrist'. The neural assault is heartily sustained
br /from the first note until the last. Don't expect any respite.
br /Enormous credit is due here to the estimable Mr Reznor's production duties,
br /aptly and ably recorded at home in his New Orleans funeral parlour studio.
br /
br /'Dried Up, Tied Up And Dead To The World'; 'Tourniquet'; 'Cryptorchid';
br /'The Reflecting God'; a few among many delights on this near-perfect album.
br /The delicious 'Deformography' (Just loving that title) a personal favorite.
br /
br /I have heard it said that in 'Real Life' Mr. Manson is a veritable pussy cat.
br /Each of us may need to ask none-the-less whether or not we could
br /trust this man with our own basket of kittens.
br /
br /A thrilling nihilistic necessity.
br /
br /God Is Dead After All.

.... I'll agree, that this album, despite its major impact on society in general, is very undervalued as a piece of music. If you sit down and listen to this record with headphones, try to pick out every single sound, and just admire the sheer precision and complexity of this record. Industrial metal is a genre that relies greatly upon the use of strange distortions, bizarre effects and one sound scapes, that created a cacophonic noise world, upon where a guitar track is then laced. This is the beauty of it: industrial metal is like a landscape painting where everything is done to the minutest detail. You can simply study it for hours, picking out every little masterstroke. And this album is no exception. But, if you want a nice industrial album where the words don't mean that much, try the Ministry department. Marilyn Manson is by far the most vocally centred band in the world, focussing greatly on just what old mr.Manson says, and how he unfolds the concept of the Antichrist Superstar. Marilyn Manson is and are definately undervalued, as musicians, and as a visionary poet and philosopher. Instead, they're billed shock rockers and respectable media critics miss out on the rather enlightening, entertaining and sharp philosophy behind this record. Pay attention to these lyrics; no one reads a book by the Marquis de Sade to admire the font.
Marilyn Manson March 27, 2005 Steven T. Jarvis (Thanet, Kent) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
From the very beginning, this album tells you what it is and what it will be; it is a right of passage, a coming of age and a journey of self-realisation. pIrresponsible Hate Anthem is exactly what it says, the battle cry of world hate and self-hate personified. It tells us all that we are worthless and it is only by using the wealth of hatred we all have for each other that we can rise above and differentiate ourselves from the filth of the world. Then, Beautiful People isolates the problem; that the weakness of the human spirit is the weakness of the world, that only strength will out and, to achieve this, weakness must be destroyed. Manson twists and turns violently through various stages of regress and resolution as he shakes of his own weaknesses, emotional and spiritual, and gains momentum and a greater, if not darker, understanding of himself, as he takes us on his long bleak journey. pThe inconsequentialities of life are cast away, Tourniquet and Wormboy make Manson the willing victim; Mister Superstar tells us that the worst possible role model is the best we will ever get, the only hope is assimilation to the things we abhor, Angel With The Scabbed Wings gives us the feel of damnation rising and Kinderfelt shows us the possibility of absolution, as damned as we have become, pAgain, Manson transforms once more, finally, throwing off all that was weak in him, he turns on the world that wanted his life and, in Antichrist Superstar, hurls all that hatred back, with such venom and such satisfaction; he has divorced himself from the world that would have swallowed him and slammed his boot down on the crawling masses that desired his blood. This is nothing short of an epiphany, carried seamlessly into (the sequel) 1996, but at far too great a cost. Minute Of Decay is the most heartfelt song of the lost soul ever written and is delivered both passionately and terribly by Manson's resolute but strained tones, this is the last regress before all that ever mattered loses its purchase on him. This song is a tragic ballad that will stir the soul and scar it eternally; this is love and death and so very much more, it is his requiem, a eulogy to a dying martyr. And yet, there is more, from the ashes of decay rises the new Angel, the Darkest Angel of all, as Manson does more that challenge God, he supplants God with himself; resurrected and all powerful, this is the moment of self realisation and the moment assertion, when the Dark Angel becomes more than the sum of ancient fears and hatred. This is the new messiah of damnation; he is all-powerful now and everything that has ever gone before has faded to nought. Finally, Man That You Fear tells us that this power is in us all and that, for good or bad, we must all walk this path and become what we are destined to be.pLyrically, this is cruel and haunting, stripping us bare and forcing us to accept, with a bizarre poetry unique to him, that we are the paradox of our hopes and fears, musically, it is brilliantly forceful and yet gentle, caressing and concussing us into understanding and acceptance. This is Manson's most powerful and emotive work and is a classic, both of the genre and the period in which it was written, so much so that we still feel a resounding sense of this album in both Holywood and Golden Age Of The Grotesque. This album is Marilyn Manson, so blatant and yet so pure, to the given value of purity. This is the stuff of legend!!!

In my lifetime I have come to assume two things British rock is judged by its musical brilliance and American rock is judged by its hype and how cool the media and public deem it to be. Marilyn Manson is a prime example of this, despite the fact that his music is quite brilliant, when his career is over, he will be more remembered for his arrogance and off stage antics and anti- establishment attitude rather than his music, which is a shame in that although his music is not everyone's cup of tea it still has its place in rock history. The tone of the album is really built around the success of Nine Inch Nails (whose lead singer Trent Reznor produced this album). Industrial metal is really a mix of heavy metal and techno and the sound of this album leans towards the latter with the guitar riffs being short and swift. If you're merely looking for a powerful rock album and like me you aren't worried too much about the lyrics as long as the sound is good then this one's for you.
