| Customer Reviews: .carly Simon May 18, 2009 Mrs. M. J. Heidrich I think this was the second LP (if anyone remembers those) I ever bought. The first being either Carole King Tapestry or Cat Stevens Teaser and the Firecat. Wonderful music still sounds as fresh today as it did in the late sixties

Serious female rock starts here December 29, 2000 sweetalkinguy@aol.com (East Midlands) 13 out of 18 found this review helpful
Today, the most interesting new music comes from female artistes and songwriters in and around Nashville. This was where it all started in the early Seventies.pJust look at the album cover. Ms Simon has obviously gone out on a cold day with no vest on. What will granny say! Who cares, our Carly is very much her own woman, going her own way. No more shooby-doo-wop I'm in lurve for the very first time bubblegum pop, which hitherto had been the limit of girlie pop ambition. This is a real woman with real feelings. Carly Simon has that ability to dig into the psychological depths with a combination of subtle lyricism and crafty tunes. These songs get across what it really felt like inside. She has rounded up the usual suspects from the gang of top session musicians. OK so now and then they just go through the motions, but they play meaningfully for her also. Much was made of backing singer Michael Philip Jagger on You're so Vain, but there is top-class playing and production throughout this album, dedicated to the best presentation of a fine collection of songs.pBack in 1972, this was an outstanding album. It still has the power to stir the emotions. Together with Tapestry from Carole King, this is a must-have record. Carly Simon has not done much since, apart from marrying James Taylor to become one half of the world's top-earning couple in the Seventies, and she was not quite the artist starving in a garret before that. But she did make a superlative album which pointed a way for others to follow. 4* only, because later women have pushed through the door she opened and to greater effect, but still essential listening.
