| Customer Reviews: ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF THE 1990's February 16, 2001 Pieter (Johannesburg) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
The quality of these songs makes this album a true classic of the 90s as Mick sails through an impressive variety of styles with great panache. There's real Stones rock in Wired All Night, Out Of Focus and Put Me In The Trash; falsetto funk in Sweet Thing; blues rock in Don't Tear Me Up and Use Me; country balladeering in Evening Gown and Hang On To Me Tonight; hints of gospel in Angel In My Heart and even Celtic folk in Handsome Molly. Emotionally compelling music - great lyrics wrapped around killer hooks. It's like those late 60s and early 70s Stones albums where every song is a classic. Mick sings his heart out and puts most of modern rock music in the trash.

Louche, funky, a little country: almost great October 5, 2000 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Half of this album is fantastic. Sweet Thing still sounds fresh, and will get anyone dancing - it's a classic Jagger track, as is Don't Tear Me Up. Evening Gown and Hang On To Me Tonight are both simple but touching ballads with a country lilt. Wired All Night sounds a little hipper than Status Quo, but not much, and the cover of Bill Withers' Use Me sounds weak and dated - in making it a duet with Lenny Kravitz, Jagger may have imagined he was proving he could still cut it with the kids, but it blunts the song's edge - a great opportunity missed. Still, this is a lot better than recent Stones stuff, I reckon, and I regularly play it - it's good music to listen to while you're travelling.
