Hendrix called billy gibbons one of the greatest blues guitarists, and if you wont take jimi's word for it then just listen to this album! Classic blues riffs, great lyrics and the boys themselves played the horn section too! This album was heavily drawn upon for their compilation album 'one foot in the blues' and rightly so. Check out 'a fool for your stockings', 'cheap sunglasses' (my favourite track) and the elmore james track 'dust my broom' - lets be honest - there aint a bad track on this album. If you like zz top or just a general blues fan this is one to add to your collection.
Dam nice tunes June 3, 2009 Cal (on the computer) It's not my favourite ZZ Top album. Not by a long shot but its is bloody good music and I'm sure it is the favourite of many other ZZ Top fans. Melts the slightly more polished 80's feel with their trademark 70's blues. Plus the use horns:D!
Azure Blue and Jalapeno Hot July 22, 2009 Mr. C. Todd (Ballyclare, Northern Ireland) This was luckily the first ZZ album I bought about 14 years ago at the same time I was getting into the likes of Howlin Wolf, Buddy Guy, SRV etc and this album is still a huge favourite of mine, i'd say it was probably one of my desert island discs. Like someone else said here, Manic Mechanic doesn't really fit (although it's pretty funny) but the other tracks more than make up for it and it's got a nice clear but not overdone kind of production, probably influenced by the Austin blues scene that was gathering momentum at the time ("Lowdown In The Street" is about the Rome Inn and the goings-on there) and you can also really here this in the guitar playing/tones here which is more Blues than Rock. If you've never heard ZZ Top before the spinning guitars and red car MTV era or are more of a blues fan, this is the one to start with.
Among ZZ Top's best July 20, 2003 Docendo Discimus (Vita scholae) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
The general concensus seems to be that "Tres Hombres" is ZZ Top's finest album.brWell, I disagree. "Tres Hombres" is a fine album, but "Degüello" is better. Not by much, sure, but it has a stronger selection of songs, with more of them being instantly memorable, such as the delightful blues-n'-boogie of "Cheap Sunglasses", "Fool For Your Stockings" and "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide".pIt's not perfect, sure, not everything is great, but nothing is less than good, and "Degüello" is one of the few truly essential purchases for any ZZ Top fan.
