Amazon.co.uk Review
iAxis: Bold As Love/i, Hendrix's second album, doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, iAre You Experienced?/i did. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's nonetheless a vital album, containing some of rock's most molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles in The Sand", the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover" and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9", where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes--and "Bold As Love", based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's iElectric Ladyland/i. Hendrix dreamed the impossible and achieved it on his guitar. i--David Stubbs/i

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs - Definitly Hendrix   August 5, 2001

At first I always thought this album inferior to Are you Experienced. But after owning each album for quite a while now I find myself always reaching for this album rather than any of the others. pThe songs cannot be faulted and many people will find them more enjoyable if they find endless experimentation less important than a great song.pThis album mixes the two aspects perfectly to make a very listenable record. I especially enjoy Bold as Love (Which finishes the album on an incredible high), Wait until tommorow and of course little Wing.pThe Band are Great as Always and really work as a unit.

5 out of 5 stars Riffs that blow your freaky mind   January 11, 2004

I bought this album in the christmas. And i immediately fell in love with it. I am a dedicated Hendrix fan, even at the ripe old age of 16 and if you are a boy of my age do not write off this music as 'stuff my dad listens to' because in fact you will find that this is some of the best music of the last century. If you are a guitarist like me, you will admire this playing. This album has some of the best riffs of the time, even though they are not too well known, Spanish Castle Magic, one of the best on the album, could be passed as a modern retro-rocker tune. It has enormous power. 'you got me floatin' ' is another of those brilliant riffs that you, guitarist or not will long to play. this album is a striking and frightening cosmic display of awesome composition that cannot afford to be missed by any age or era of people.

5 out of 5 stars If all the hippies cut off their hair...   November 30, 2003

This CD is purely amazing because it shows Hendrix doing what he is world-renowned for doing...playing the guitar like no one else and creating many new feelings, experieces, emotions, loves, hates, creations and magic throughout the world.pIt is one of Hendrix's most experimental albums but it rocks!! Just like he always did.....just wish I was old enough to have seen him, but he lives on through this great CD for many future generations to appreciate.pBuy it now if you are any sort of Hendrix fan!!pPeace out.

5 out of 5 stars just ask the axis   August 29, 2004

'axis:bold as love' is far too often overlooked as a major triumph by the experience in favour of 'are you experienced' and 'electric ladyland'. however in my opinion it is by far and away their best work. although it doesnt hold the raw enery of 'are you experienced' and certainly lacks the power and muscle of 'electric ladyland' it has once supreme quality that the other albums lack, intimacy. from the musings of 'castles made of sand' to the longing of 'little wing' and the questioning behing 'if 6 was 9' this is the god father of acid rock. hendrix's guitar is cultured and mesmerising as always and he finds a new found subtly to his voice here. from the art work on the sleve to the last words of the title track this is a rare treat that lets you inside the mind of jimi, go get a copy and enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Underrated classic from the greatest   September 29, 2005

There has always been a debate about which of the main three studio albums he released with Experience were his best, and one school of thought which states that the further he strove to capture his ideal sound, the further he moved away from it. If that was the case, then how did he manage to record the legendary Voodoo Chile three albums down the line? Anyway, the way I see it, there were two outstanding rock albums, interspersed with a bluesy set of ballads. Which is Axis. Every guitarist and music fan should own this little beauty - from Little Wing to Castles Made of Sand, it's a winner, and just proves even further that he really was the greatest.
