| Customer Reviews: Hugely enjoyable January 19, 2008 Guy Whit (London, UK) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Go for this one, for the glorious sound engineering, for the magnificent orchestral playing, for the masterly conducting - but, above all, for Pavarotti and Freni who sing their hearts out, both, in turns, meltingly intimate and extravagantly open-throated. The best Tosca on disc, rivalling Colin Davis's set on Phillips (where Caballe just pips her Italian competitor for all-round beauty of tone). Milnes is a menacing presence as Scarpia, singing with erotically-charged venom. A glorious recording - and you have to give in to Pavs, whatever the subsequent hype etc etc.
The best ensemble performance on record November 9, 2001 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
A joyous recording in which all the singers perform to bring out the best in each other. The Pavarotti rendition of Recondita Armonia is full of passion. Frenis' Vissi d'arte is outstanding. For me Butterly and Boheme remain the greater operas of the Puccini repertoire but in this recording, the intensity across the whole performance means that the famous Tosca arias do not dominate or diminish the the whole recording.pOne of my desrt island disks
Pity about the conductor May 22, 2009 Mr. D. A. Littlewood (UK) This cast was originally, it is rumoured, meant for Karajan. He might have Svengalied something out of it, but Rescigno is hopelessly slack. The first thing Tosca needs is a dramatic conductor and, compared with the likes of Pappano, Karajan and, above all, de Sabata, Rescigno is an also-ran. A cast of good singers, though with Freni over-parted, cannot make up for this primary deficiency.
