5 out of 5 stars Timeless   November 21, 2006

Probably one of the top 20 rock albums of the past 20 years, I still consider this to be Pearl Jam's best album to date. Possibly even Pearl Jam's career defining album, which is unusual for a band to be at the absolute peak of their game on releasing their debut. br / br /Penned and sung by Eddie Vedder, without a doubt one of rocks great vocalists, this album has a fair few of PJ's best-loved tracks. br / br /If you're relatively new to Pearl Jam's music, I would recommend you buy either this release or their greatest hits album, 'rearviewmirror: Greatest hits 1991-2003'. br / br /Fan favourites on this album are "Jeremy", "Alive", Even Flow" and "Black". br /Some tracks I rate highly would be "Alive", "Garden", "Jeremy" and "Release". br / br /Still, if you don't fancy buying the album, at least download some of the tracks I mentioned. You won't be dissapointed. br / br /If you're a fan of Pearl Jam you might also like The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots or even Nirvana. If you like this record I would highly recommend listening to 'Siamese Dream' by The Smashing Pumpkins, or 'Superunknown' by Soundgarden, which is apparently one of Eddie Vedder's favourite albums.

Pearl Jam's debut album, although becoming distant in the past, became a legend among the new coming grunge / hard rock bands back in the early 90s.pA timeless album, a mark in every rocker's collection. Even after all this years, this is the ONE album, the best Pearl Jam album ever (in my opinion, of course).pTimeless songs like Even Flow, Alive, Black, Oceans, Jeremy, Wash... i could go on and on until i reached the entire album song list.pAfter 10... never did Pearl Jam achieve this unique feeling of power and balance in one album.pBlack and Oceans are my favorite songs ever and the lyrics... pure poetry. You could write the songs of this album in a poetry book, a heavy, disturbing poetry book... unforgetable, unavoidable...pSimple unique.

This album is one of the finest pieces of work from the "grunge" era. Quite simply put, it rocks. There is a wide range of emotion that just seeps off this disk. There are so many good songs that it is hard to talk about them all. p"Jeremy," a song about a boy in Texas who killed himself in front of his class at school, is the song that drove Pearl Jam into the limelight. The song is so racked with pain and anguish. It is just one great example of the caliber of music that is "Ten." p"Once," "Evenflow," and "Why Go" are all hard-rockin' tracks on the record. Each is very emotionally charged. "Black," "Alive," and "Release" are all more along the lines of melodic rock. . . None of which are ballads, but they are much slower tempo songs. Every song is this record is top shelf. The three bonus songs on the UK release are great, originally, I had to buy singles to get those tracks. pLike I said before, this record is just amazing. Pearl Jam helped pave the way for an era. And in turn, they have paved the way for many of today's bands to make their music. Eddie Vedder and the gang made a record in "Ten" that has stood the test of time. It is many times over platinum with good reason: it is spectacular. Pearl Jam is amazing in the fact that they are still making music. If you look, they are one of the only bands from their era that have survived, both as a band and actually still being alive. This album is a must have in any CD collection, even better if you can find it on wax. Viva la vinyl!pepc

5 out of 5 stars THE Grunge album.   July 30, 2004

Man, how do you review this?brI'll probably fuck it up, but I'm gonna try. It's just hard lol.pTen is the biggest selling 'grunge' album of all time, currently nearing the 13 million mark. It's also probably one of the greatest (lyrically and musically) and most personal (Vedder's childhood anthem, 'Alive') to come out of America for a long time. The fact is, it will never be bettered. Not just by Pearl Jam, but anyone. Nothing comes close. And it isn't even my favourite PJ album; Why? Well, simply because of that. It's so dark, so personal - it's just hard to listen to in general if you know the meaning of some of the songs.pThere is no filler on 'Ten', simply some tracks are oft regarded as better than some of the others. The standout tracks are of course the hits: 'Alive', 'Jeremy', 'Black' and of course, 'Even Flow'. However, they're not neccesarily the better tracks. 'Garden' and 'Release' are some of the greatest songs ever graced onto the CD format, and 'Deep' is simply dark. Many cite Aice in Chains as being the 'dark' grunge band, and indeed they're right to a point (Jar of Flies) but listen to some of the stuff off 'Ten'. This is so dark it's depressing.p'Jeremy', well; what can one say? It's about a kid who killed half his class in a Texas school about ten years ago. The video was banned by MTV for several years; hence they didn't start making videos again 'till 1998 and you're more likely to see a six-armed man than anything legal with "Pearl Jam Unplugged" written on it.p'Alive' is probably the darkest PJ song ever, with the possible exception of 'Do The Evolution'. It's about Eddie Vedder's childhood and being told the father he never had was dying. Nothing you'd think about the first few listens, but after that it's quite haunting.p'Even Flow' is a grunge legend and fairly basic stuff. Probably the most accessible song on 'Ten' and always a live favourite. Listen and you'll see why. Great riffs, some odd lyrics (chasing butterflies) and in general a cracking rock tune.p'Black' is simply beautiful. If you're happy it'll make you depressed; and if you're depressed it'll make you cry. It's about how bad life can be and how everyting can, and indeed will, simply turn to black. It's such a hard song to explain. Listen to the acoustic version on the new "Live at Benaroya Hall" CD and you'll see what I mean. The audience sing the last verse completely in tune and in unison. Moving stuff.p'Release' is an amazing tune. The verses are about suicide and confusion, and the chorus is about never giving up. A great song with some very thoughtful lyrics. The best ending to an album. Ever.p'Deep' is just that. Just listen to it. Scary stuff.p'Porch' and 'Garden' are two great songs which should really be played together to understand them (hence the names) and are about lots of things. 'Porch' is fast and furious, while 'Garden' is slow and simply brilliant.p'Why Go' is my least favourite song but still great by anyone's standards. Some excellent drumming and interesting lyrics. Sort of the older brother to 'Go' on their next album.p'Ten' is an excellent album, but one of the least accessible you will find. Also, if you're feeling a bit down and have a sharp object, I don't reccomend playing it.p"Even Flow... Thoughts arrive like Butterflies, he don't know... so he chases them away"pI'm done.p6 stars. Really.

Pearl Jam are definately one of the best bands to date ( my favourite anyway) and ten, their first album is undoubtately their best. Ten is a rare album in that it can be listened to from start to finish thousands of times without getting boring. the intelligence of the music is outstanding and the lyrics are meaningful and emotional this is a must for any fan of the grunge genre.
