Amazon.co.uk Review iWorking Classical/i might just be the perfect outlet for the composing skills of Sir Paul McCartney. Here, the former Beatles (and, let's not forget, Wings) member scales things down from his previous classical-music endeavours--the overweight works iLiverpool Oratorio/i and iStanding Stone/i. In the hands of the Loma Mar Quartet chamber group and the London Symphony Orchestra, McCartney's shorter compositions sound all the more intimate (and effective). Album opener "Junk" is a simple waltz dating from the composer's days with the Fab Four, performed here by the Quartet with short-but-sweet results. "A Leaf" is another waltz motif, this one performed with a full orchestra. McCartney pop favourites "Warm and Beautiful", "Somedays", "She's My Baby", and "The Lovely Linda" all get chamber-music treatments that bring out their compositional beauty. And, while influences seem to range from Janáacute;cek to Morricone, there's no doubting that McCartney knows how to write a convincing ditty--pop or otherwise. i--Jason Verlinde /i

| Customer Reviews: A masterpiece December 1, 1999 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Sir Paul is Getting Better all the time. Pieces like A Leaf, Tuesday, Calico Skies and Somedays are music of such quality that we have not heard since the end of the era of 19th century great composers. Thank you Sir Paul. You have made the 20th century much better.
Some truly fine moments, musically speaking, throughout. December 22, 1999 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Sir Paul is definitely 'Getting Better All The Time'. His lyrical, often romantic, sometimes programmatic style, is contrasted with whimsical elements, at times, to offer the listener a varied and pleasant musical experience. Particularly effective, positively sumptuous are the reworkings of previously recorded songs such as 'My Love' and 'Somedays' and the works for full orchestra work well. Sir Paul must now surely be ranked as one of the twentieth century's most prolific and successful composers across the musical spectrum.
McCartney - heir to Beethoven and Mozart? November 2, 1999 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
McCartney's classical efforts (the McCartney Oratorio, Standing Stone) have not had the same commercial success as his more mainstream 'pop' offerings.pThe Oratorio, though, had at least a couple of truly excellent tunes. Standing Stone also, to my mind, is an enjoyable addition to the artist's oeuvre. pWorking Classical is not as ambitious as these. Several of the tunes are classical/quartet re-workings of McCartney songs. Often the re-working brings out the song's innate tunefuless, as happens with 'Calico Skies', 'My Love', and 'SomeDays', occasionally, as with 'Maybe I'm Amazed', nothing has been gained, and much lost.pThere are some pieces that have been recorded for the first time. Some left me tepid, but others contained much beauty.pThe new Mozart? His ambition does him credit, and he acquits himself well.
