5 out of 5 stars A Satisfying Album   February 24, 2001

This album was Billy's first of the 1980s and is an extremely eclectic collection of songs. It is the work of a man at the peak of his powers. It opens with the sound of breaking glass before launching into You may be right, the most 'rocking' song he ever wrote. The album is a carefully balanced blend of upbeat rockers like the aforementioned track and the hit single It's still rock and roll to me, and the usual sumptuous slow numbers like Through the long night and the wonderful McCartney-esque C'etait toi (which is sung half English, half French like The Beatles' Michelle). Other tracks on the album such as I don't want to be alone and Sleeping with the television on may not be appear to be immediately catchy, but will soon lodge themselves in your memory. A particular favourite of mine is the wonderfully light Don't ask me why - guaranteed to cheer you up and have you prancing around the house! All in all, a very satisfying collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Even if it's old junk   May 5, 2004

A strangely underrated BJ album, with lots of undiscovered classics, including (my favourite) I Don't Want To Be Alone.pPerfect listening for frosty Saturday mornings.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Joel   March 4, 2008

Looking back on it now, this is probably the last in a line of classic Billy Joel albums. Innocent Man which followed this two albums later sold way better but just doesn't have the quality of songs that this does. It's one of those rare albums that doesn't have a dud and bristles from start to finish with brilliant pop and rock songs. Joel's voice is in typically superb form and listening back now after all these years you realise just how precious his talent was - both in terms of quality of voice and songs. br / br /It's a little less piano orientated than some of his other albums and quite rocky in parts (again not to be confused with the '50s rock 'n' roll of An Innocent Man) but also has slightly softer songs like C'Était toi. br / br /As often early on in his career when he was a little less of navel gazer there are smattering of good lyrics, the sentiments of being utterly obsessed with an ex in All for Leyna will be familiar to many - but for me, the most memorable moment of the album is the bit most people will know where Richie Connata breaks into the sax solo in It's Still Rock and Roll to me and Joel shouts "All right Rico..." Great stuff. Fun music, superb songs that still sound great. Makes you long for new talent this good.

3 out of 5 stars Some great nuggets, but not classic Joel   August 7, 2002

Released in the middle of his late 70s/ early 80s zenith, this isn't up to the standards of The Stranger or An Innocent Man but it does have its moments.brAll For Leyna is a fantastic song, totally original, a pointed analysis of obsession, and the album closer Through The Long Night has the sweetest harmonies on a Joel record. Very Beatley, it makes it into George Martin's Top 10 pop songs ever, which is pretty remarkable as it is not well known.brOverall, a great second side is let down by some weak stuff up front. Sometimes a Fantasy, for example, is turgid pseudo-rock and Don't Ask Me Why on this album doesn't sound half as good as it does on the Millennium concert, when it is played live.brJoel fans will find enough to please them here, but fringers should head elsewhere in his catalogue.

3 out of 5 stars Great Tunes!   February 2, 2007

Billy is on of the masters of piano driven rock pop, and I certainly miss that we will not get any new studio albums from him... being retired from making rock and pop music. He is now doing classical music records and touring performing songs from his great back catalogue. br /In this album I hear more pop oriented songs than the previous records. It feels that he was starting to craft the sound that would materialise in Storm Front which is a phenomenal record. This album has terrific singles with those catchy Billy Joel melodies that are always at the top form. br / br /If you want to download just a few... these are my top 3: br / br /- You may be right (this one sounds terrific live) br /- Don't Ask Me Why br /- C'Etait Toe (You were the one) br / br /Billy has an amazing string of albums; don't stop with this one... br / br /Let the music play! br /
