Amazon.co.uk Review
It took over 20 years for Van Halen to release a iBest of/i album, and even then, the band downplayed the effort. Instead sticking to the original plan of releasing a two-disc set--one of material with original front-man David Lee Roth, and the other with his 11-year replacement Sammy Hagar--the band opted for a single CD chronicling their entire career. For the previously uninitiated, it's a golden introduction to a band that changed the face of 1980s hard rock. Guitar-blazing old tracks like "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", and "Dance the Night Away" segue into more commercial numbers like "Jump" and "Panama" from 1984. These in turn, set the stage for Hagar's slicker, more polished vocals on "Right Now" and "How Do I Know When It's Love". But while newcomers will be thrilled with the delights within, old fans will probably find little of use, since the two highly touted new tracks with Roth are pretty disposable. i--Jon Wiederhorn /i

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection of Van Halen classsics!   July 4, 2003

I was interested in hearing some Van Halen music after only knowing some of their singles, so I thought a greatest hits album would be a good introduction. I was not disappointed, and would definately recommend this album to a first time Van Halen buyer.pThe album's songs are in date order, so the first 8 tracks are with original front man David Lee Roth (1979 - 1984), and tracks 9 - 14 have vocals by replacement Sammy Hagar (1986 - 1996). There are then 3 new tracks at the end (1 with SH, and 2 with DLR, who rejoined the band to record the new stuff).pThe DLR era starts very rocky, his showmanship and vocals are unique and enjoyable, whilst Eddie Van Halen's guitar pieces are out of this world. The album progresses into 80's synth rock with songs such as Jump (that song everybody knows), with the inclusion of keyboards. This gives great music variety.pSammy Hagar's era has more ballads, which at first sound boring in comparison to the start of the album, but after a few listens you can appreciate the maturing of the band. Eddie continues to amaze, and SH delivers well on vocals to this kind of rock. pThe new songs rock, and sound fresh, I wouldn't say they were 'disposable', but an example of how Van Halen can still churn out great music.pIn conclusion the music on this album is wide, as it spans over a 15 year period. Some great rock tracks, the best guitar solo's your'll ever hear, great keyboard work, and great ballads that still have the Van Halen edge that makes you want more. David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar both deliver great vocals with a unique individual spin, and Eddie Van Halen has to be one of the all time great guitarists and all round musicians. Bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Alex Van Halen are extremely under-rated, both are supurb. As a band Van Halen make fantastic music, and this is well showcased on this album.pI am now going to get some Van Halen studio albums, but after enjoying every track on this greatest hits, I cant decide which!

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction   October 1, 2004

This is a great compilation, especially for those who have only heard Jump! Its got nearly all of their well-know songs, such as Jump, Aint' talkin' bout love and humans being (featured in the movie Twister).pVan Halen's original lineup was fronted by Dave Lee Roth who eventually left to start his solo career (see "Eat em and Smile" featuring Steve Vai) and was replaced by Sammy Hagar, only to have Roth return briefly for a song or two. You'll find Roth-era songs at the begining and the end of this CD with a chunk of Sammy Hagar era songs in the middle. There are a couple of great songs missing from the album but if you like this CD and want to hear more, I heartily recommend 1984, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and "Van Halen" their debut.

5 out of 5 stars Roth tunes *Disposable*? I don't think so.   May 7, 2000

Van Halen is David Lee Roth. The Red Rocker material is fine. There are moments but when you say Van Halen...put the word Mighty in front of it and you get The Mighty Van Halen with David Lee Roth. No better frontman anywhere! He DOMINATED the 80's. Sorry Sam. As for the new tracks with Diamond...they are NOT disposable. They are ass kicking. I can't wait to hear them live when the boys reconvene and take BIG ROCK back out on the road! Leave the ballads at home with Sammy Roy Hagar.

Let#x27;s face it, Best of albums are rarely true to their title.brIn this case however, we have without doubt, the finest collection of Van Halen#x27;s awsome guitar riffs and solos.brGreat value for money!!

5 out of 5 stars Right Now, check out this cd   September 16, 2009

In my opinion, this cd is a good place to begin if this is your first Van Halen cd. Both of the David Lee Roth songs and Sammy Hagar songs on this cd are great. My overall favorite cd on the song is "Dreams". The thing I like about this cd is that it features songs by both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. This is a good cd to put in your stereo player when you need an emotional energy boost. Admittedly, I wish that the song "Finish what you started" was on this cd but this greatest hits compilation is a good taster of Van Halen songs for a person starting to listen to Van Halen cds. The top five songs on the cd are: br / br /#1 Dreams (10 out of 10)-a wonderful song about going after your dreams regardless of the outer circumstances that come up. I first heard this wonderful song as a teenager when I was at a soccer game of one of my cousins who was playing at a university in Indiana. br /#2 Right Now (10 out of 10)- a good song on seizing the moments in your life, hence right now. Its also encouraging one to go after what they plan immediately. br /#3 Can't Stop Lovin You (9 out of 10) A heartwarming song about how the love for the other person endures regardless of the challenges that appear. br /#4 Why Can't this be Love (9 out of 10)- an interesting song about how the person is ready to go the next step in their relationship with the one they care about and they're wondering why take time in going to the next level when the chemistry already exists in that relationship. br /#5 Jump-(9 out of 10)- an energetic song on how a person needs to go ahead and make the leap towards what they think or desire regardless of how challenging it may seem. An encouraging and motivating song in the same positive spirit as "Dreams"(with the soul of Sammy Hagar) but with the soul of David Lee Roth. br / br /All in all the compilation is a good to listen to when you want to give yourself a good emotional boost towards feeling joyful.
