Amazon.co.uk Review Times might have changed, now--with the advent of new-metal acts like Korn--but throughout the 1980s, a damning generalisation held true: English heavy metal rocked, while the American variant--with a few notable exceptions--sucked. The difference went beyond aesthetics--the Yanks' avowed penchant for big hair and eyeliner--though that was certainly part of it: British metal was essentially working man's food, loosely descended from biker-meets and Northern pubs; whereas, in the States, it was an outgrowth of stadium-rock, which traditionally subordinated substance to spectacle. Plug-ugly, cartoonishly morbid, Iron Maiden were typical of the local effort: emphasising a driving, no-nonsense approach to the music. And it worked: among metal aficionados, this album ranks as one of the defining moments of the entire genre. Of the eight songs here--including Maiden classics like "Run To The Hills" and the title track--only "Gangland" falls flat, though it's immediately overshadowed by "Hallowed Be Thy Name," acknowledged by many as this band's apotheosis. Number of the beast December 31, 2006 C. Dinnage (suffolk, uk) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Iron maiden are one of the best heavy metal bands out there. After owning this albulm and listening to to it a lot i can see why it was voted one of the best ever heavy metal albums. It openes with the fast and furiors invaders which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Some of the true classis are 22 acacia avenue, number of the beast and run to the hills. The last thing i have to say is how good Hallowed by thy name is. It is one of the best songs ever written and has so much emotion in.

Classic maiden type thing January 30, 2005 George Cook (Candy Land) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I own nearly all the Maiden CDs, and this one still stands out as one of my favourites. Over the band's history of albums (is it 23 now?) this is definitely one of, if not, the best.brNow, in the classic words of stephen_armstrong_sa, whoever you are:brTrack by track analysis? Why thank you.br(there, i gave you credit, so don't sue me)brInvaders: Strangely viewed as filler by a great deal as fans, but for me it's a classic play-me-loud brainless heavy metal tune. And that's no bad thing. 8/10brChildren of the Damned: Brilliant riff throughout, and haunting lyrics from brucey. A tune brilliantly written and composed, stands out on the album. 8.5/10brThe Prisoner: What other band could do a song based on an old show from the 60s and make it actually worth listening to? Probably quite a few bands, but maiden do it better. 9/10br22 Acacia Avenue: Another great song, even if it did kinda freak me out a bit at first. Packed with atmosphere and outstanding guitar work throughout. 8/10brNumber of the Beast: Hooray! The famous title track doesnt fail to deliver. From the legendary words of the passage read at the start to the blistering solos (and everything in between), this is one of the best songs maiden ever wrote. 10/10brRun to the Hills: Another amazing song here. The simple but oh-so-effective riff at the start leaves other bands wondering why they didnt think of it first, and the pounding chorus is just amazing at max volume! Hilarious video, too. 10/10brGangland: Well, after the last two songs, it would be nearly impossible to create something worthy of following after. Not to say this is a bad track, but it just seems a bit poor in comparison, that's all. 7.5/10brTotal Eclipse: The only song on the album that went thru one ear and out the other when i listened to it. Give it a chance - it may not be able to stand up to the classic anthems a bit earlier on, but it's still quite good... 7/10brHallowed be thy name: That's more like it! An explosive 7 minute finale to the CD. Mind-blowing twin guitar work from Dave and Adrian, and Bruce's voice can't be topped. How can anyone hold their breath for that long?! 10/10brOverall, this is a landmark offering from the band we all know and love. Or if you're a new fan, you will know and love them after this. Excellent bassage from the mighty Steve Harris and awesome guitars make for an energetic performance from start to finish. Bruce's introduction into the fold gives the band almost a different identity, but its a good direction to be going in. The signs are clear: buy this now!
Brucy and the Beast November 8, 2003 Dudley (UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
When Paul Dianno imploded in a puff of cocane, and Iron Maiden were in need of a new singer, Bruce Dickinson immidiatly stepped in, completly revolutionizing rock music forever. In 1982, when the album was released, "The Number of the Beast" debued and stayed at number one. The results speak for themselves:brThis is, without doubt, one of the greatest album of all time, by one of the greatest bands of all time.brThe albums two singles, "Run to the Hills" and the title track itself were, and still are, widley regarded as the two best songs by Iron Maiden, and consiquently the two most popular.brOther classics on the album include:br"The Prisoner," inspired by the cult 60s TV show, and a panteded Maden classic.br"22 Acacia Avenue," the smut-ridden sequal to "Charlotte the Harlot" on their debuet album.br"Children of the damned," the slow, seductive, and potentially genius classic which was inexplicably never released as a single.brAns last but not least, "Hallowed Be Thy Name," the best song on the album that ends with a bang, rather than a whimper.brThe other songs on the album are by no means "Album Fillers." They are all equally impressive, and whoever says otherwise needs their head examined.brThis is Maiden doing what they do best, and you would be hard-pushed to find a more exhilerating 45 mins of pure entertainment...
THE best of the beast? December 16, 2000 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Number of the Beast is an album which set the benchmark for heavy metal in the 80s, and powered the genre into a new era. The addition of Bruce Dickinson's powerful vocal gymnastics took the already popular and promising Iron Maiden to another plane. The two superb singles taken from the album, 'Run to the Hills' and the title track, proved that good music didn't have to bow down to the radio-friendly consensus to sell units and smash its way into the 'pop' charts. Oh how those smug DJs must have cringed when they had to play the songs in the chart run down. Unlike many mainstream albums, the quality didn't waver beyond the singles. The record opens with 'Invaders' which hits like a locamotive out of control. The lilting intro to 'Children of the Damned' lulls the listener into a false sense of security before it explodes to a storming finale. 'The Prisoner' thunders along beneath a catchy chorus, and '22 Acacia Avenue' is an intelligent pot pourri of hard hitting riffs and rhythms. There is a slight lapse with 'Gangland', before the album closes with a masterpiece in 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'. The updated CD version of this record also includes 'Total Eclipse'. Initially released as the B-side to 'Run to the Hills', and missing from the original album, it's a great track and would have undoubtedly been on the album had CDs been around in 1982. NOTB was a ground breaking record, and still sounds as fresh and vibrant now as it did on its release, when it found its way to the number 1 spot in the UK album charts. Maiden have rarely reached such a peak in performance and writing since.
A classic album from Maiden's golden era. February 26, 2003 Mr. C. D. Russell 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
Basically, the songs on this album can be separated into 3 tiers, amazing: Run To The Hills, Number Of The Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name. excellent: Children Of The Damned, 22 Acacia Avenue, The Prisoner. good: Total Eclipse, Gangland, Invaders. br Invaders has some good riffs but i don't like the lyrics that much, especially the 'pillaging','looting' bit, it just doesn't seem to fit in. The chorus could be better but it is still good as a song.br Children Of The Damned has a great opening but again the lyrics aren't amazing. Similar gripes to 'Invaders'. A little overrated as a song.br The Prisoner has a great heavy opening riff and a nice singalong chorus. Its a good song, bu tas I wasnt aroung for the TV series I probably don't like this as much as other people.br 22 Acacia Avenue is great, especially when the tempo speeds up ater a copule of minutes, but the opening is great too.br When you first hear The Number Of The Beast you think its the best song on the album but then you realise that goes to Hallowed Be Thy Name. But its still great when the guitar kicks in after the joke Bible verse. Good lyrics to sing along to and a great guitar solo (see if you can spot when the guitarists switch without watching the video).br Run To the Hills is labelled overrated and this is true to an extent, but thats because its very accesible, perhaps Maidens most accesible classic, so again you think slightly less of it after a few listens of the whole album. However, that drum and guitar riff and the chorus make it a great anthem, and it too has a great guitar solo.br Gangland is the worst song on the album. However, it isn't horrible, it just seems that way after some of the best songs have just finished. Chorus isn't great. But it wasn't written by Steve Harris who wrote nearly all of Maiden's best songs, except for 2 Minutes To Midnight, so you can accept why this song isn't that excellent.br Total Eclipse is better than Gangland, but not as good as Invaders. Lyrics are good with a nice opening riff. However its not very memorable.br Hallowed Be Thy Name is outstanding. A Maiden Top 5 would be hard to do but you know this and Fear Of The Dark would be in it. Very atmospheric opening with haunting vocals, then it gets heavy and fast. Similar to Fear Of The Dark in many ways. Great guitar solo too. An absolute classic, you can't help but like this.br Overall this album kicks some serious ass. It isn't that consistent, and you could say Piece Of Mind or Powerslave had less bad tracks, but the good tracks are awesome. I recommend this to anyone who likes guitar based hard rock metal.
