5 out of 5 stars History Ain't What It Used To Be   December 23, 2007
Mr. S. Harland (Marske-by-the-Sea)
This compilation covers the essential period 1977-1982 and documents the band's beginnings through to the Nic Austin era. Businessman Miles Copeland was looking to get involved with releasing records and employed Mark 'Sniffin' Glue' Perry to sign bands for his labels: Step-Forward and Illegal. Chelsea vocalist Gene October would later work as an AR rep for Copeland. br / br /October was to his credit at the epicentre of the punk movement and slightly older than most punk rockers of the time but a continual succession of band members did not help stablise the band's direction. The fact that it took Chelsea three years to release their first album was mainly down to the revolving door of musicians that came and went. Pete Frame would have a field day writing a line-up history of this band! br / br /The early singles and b-sides all appear in chronological order. The band's first single and most well known release 'Right To Work' kicks off proceedings, at the time thought to be a rallying cry for the working class though later it was discovered it was actually an anti-union song. 'High Rise Living' was an attempt to sympathise with those poor sods stuck in tower blocks, October himself being no veteran of them. The first line-up of any real note involved guitarists James Stevenson, Geoff Myles and Dave Martin with Chris Bashford on drums. It was this line-up that recorded the first Chelsea album. Bashford apart all appeared on the anthemic third single 'Urban Kids' which remained a live favourite. Subsequent releases 'No-ones Coming Outside, the American only release of 'I'm on Fire', 'Look at the Outside' and a cover of the Seeds song 'No Escape' were fine outstanding melodic punk songs that have stood the test of time. br / br /On the eve of an American tour in 1980 all three of the guitarists quit the band. Stevenson joined Gen X just before Billy Idol hot footed it to the USA; Martin Myles formed their own band The Smart. October recruited new temporary musicians including Barry Smith and Stevie Lewins, who had played in Wilko Johnson's band. br / br /On October's return a new Chelsea line-up appeared for the release of the band's seventh single 'Rockin Horse', which was notable for it marked the appearance of Nic Austin on guitar. Austin matured into a fine songwriter and was responsible for such gems as 'Evacuate' and 'War Across The Nation', with more financial muscle these two singles should have been hits but they got lost in 'indie land'. This version of Chelsea quite clearly enjoyed a second wind, appearing on the nationwide 'So What' tour with the Anti-Nowhere League, Chron Gen and The Defects. The release of the 'Evacuate' album further cemented this reputation with Nic Austin penning many songs that deserved a much wider audience. After a small but successful club tour of the UK in the autumn of 1982 the Nic Austin era of Chelsea all went their seperate ways. It would be 23 years before Chelsea would release an album that matched their first release and 'Evacuate'. Nic Austin joined Bandits at 4'O Clock and disappeared into oblivion before resurfacing as the main songwriter on 1993s release of 'The Alternative', before promptly disappearing off the face of the earth again. br / br /This compilation is an accurate document of early Chelsea and well worth purchasing. Now we just need some enterprising soul to release such unreleased gems as 'An Atrocity' and 'Get Out and Walk'!
