Amazon.co.uk Review The come-from-nowhere success of Shania Twain's previous album, iThe Woman In Me/i, proved that the world was ready for a combination of traditional instruments, girl-power themes and dance-pop dynamics. Whether Twain is a modern-day Dolly Parton or a country music Spice Girl is a matter of perspective; with her third album, she accentuates the sing-along choruses and simple dance rhythms while downplaying the country elements. As a pop move, it works wonderfully for her, earning Twain a valued spot on MTV, VH-1 and pop radio. The emphasis is on fun rather than depth, of course, but no one can accuse her of being stingy: She and her Svengali-like producer/husband, slick-rock king Robert "Mutt" Lange (Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, AC/DC) load down the album with 16 songs, all of them quite radio-friendly. i--Michael McCall/i

Quality October 2, 2005 Budge Burgess (Kilmarnock, Scotland) 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
There are times when I'd use the word 'pop' in its most dismissive sense - cheap, superficial, ephemeral, commercial, hyped-up pap. But there are elements of pop which rise way above the baseline. Shania Twain is a class act who has taken country into the pop charts without dumbing down. She has a great voice, collaborates with her producer/husband in the writing of some memorable numbers, and has great stage presence and personality - a belief in herself and her abilities which she projects outstandingly well.pThe songs (all songs on this album are written by her and her partner) achieve a sophisticated pop/ballad feel - there is a driving beat, but it is subservient to the emotion and feel of the song and the potency of her voice. The words convey a raw irony and almost self-conscious understanding of life's ups and downs.pThis is excellent, sophisticated pop, or country-pop, or pop-country, from a highly accomplished performer. Shania Twain delivers energy music - this is an album to play when you're feeling a little down, a little tired, or need a quick boost of her dynamic persona.p'Man! I feel like a woman' 'That don't impress me much' are the anthems from this album, future classics which will be played decades from now as synonymous with the best of the era's music. They are belted out with rare quality and ooomph! But there are no weak tracks on this album, no fillers. You get a variety of rhythms, beats and emotions in what is a quality production from a real, class act.

A fun, radio-friendly pop album December 19, 2003 Peter Durward Harris (Leicester England) 15 out of 19 found this review helpful
Shania's previous album to this, The woman in me, was a huge American success but did not yield any British hits. This is the album that made her famous in Britain and it's not difficult to see why. All the songs are catchy pop songs that have the potential to appeal to people of all ages. The original North American version (which I haven't heard but would probably like even better) apparently has more of a country feel to it. This version, remixed for the European market, shows only limited evidence of Shania's country roots.pThis album yielded five British hit singles, these being You're still the one (top ten), When (top twenty), From this moment on (top ten), That don't impress me much (top three) and Man I feel like a woman (top three). Don't be stupid was remixed again for single release and made the top 5. Many of the other songs had hit potential and it must have been difficult selecting which ones to be released as singles. I understand that several of them were hits in America and elsewhere. Of those that didn't become British hits, I particularly like Honey I'm home (a strong woman song reminiscent of Any man of mine, from The woman in me album), If you wanna touch her ask, Rock this country, I'm holding on to love, Black eyes blue tears (a song about a battered woman) and the song featured in the Notting Hill soundtrack, You've got a way. Well, that only leaves about four songs that I haven't mentioned but they are also good.pSome country fans don't like this but although I, even as a country fan, enjoy listening to her sing pop music when it's this good. Shania has made the switch to pop very effectively, at least on this album. This should not come as a surprise to anybody who knows that Shania was, for a time, a member of a choir that sang a diverse range of material, but particularly theatrical music (and nothing remotely country). So when Shania's pop career is finished, she will have plenty of options.pEnjoy this for what it is - an upbeat pop album.

Shania Twain: the biggest-selling female artist of all times February 25, 2004 Luciano (Buenos Aires, Argentina) 7 out of 12 found this review helpful
There's no doubt about why this is in the Top Ten of biggest-selling albums of all times, or why this sold over 35 million copies world-wide so far, or why Shania Twain is the biggest-selling female artist in the world!brThis master-piece is a visible collection of songs that travelled all over the world and rocked every little place of the entire planet earth.brWith her own collection of hits, Shania took the world by storm with this mix of pop, country and rock!brThe whole album is awesome and every single track has a refreshing sound and wonderful message.brSo, don't resist it! Feel it! I personally love every song on the album and is the first time that I don't have to skip to the next song! I love all of them!brThis is my review on each track:br1. You're still the one - the first single in most places, it was Shania's first hit in the UK. She first took the US by storm with this hit, climbing at No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and then made her impact on the UK Top 40, reaching No.10. "You're Still The One" is a wonderful ballad and an international super-hit that remains in the heart of every person in the world, I think everybody loves the song!br2. When - The second single-off the album in the UK, never released elsewhere, it made a very respectable No.18 and it was her second chart hit in the UK. I love this track, it's very emotional and Shania's voice sounds very sweet.br3. From this moment on - The third single released in the UK, climbing at No.9 and reaching No.4 in the US. With this song, I discovered Shania. Is lovely and sweet and her voice sounds amazing.br4. Black eyes blue tears - Great track from storming album. This wasn't released as a single but it's great, I love it!br5. I won't leave you lonely - This song is a very relaxing ballad. It reminds me a lot to the Police's "Every Breath You Take". Never released as a single.br6. I'm holdin' on to love (to save my life) - A good up-tempo song, this reminds me to Tina Turner's "What You Get Is What See". Never released as a single.br7. Come on over - The album's title-track is very catchy! Released as a single in the USA, it came at No.1 on the Billboard's Country Top 20.br8. You've got a way (Notting Hill Remix) - Taken from the soundtrack from the motion picture "Notting Hill" this remix version is better-produced and arranged than the original, and is one of my album's favourite. It was released as a single in the USA.br9. Whatever you do! don't! - One of my favourite rock tracks ever! This is a very tour-feeling song! Never released as a single.br10. Man! I feel like a woman! - With "That Don't Impress Me Much", this is Shania Twain's biggest hit in the UK, it was released in October 1999 and came at No.3.br11. Love gets me every time - The first single-off the album in the US. Never released in the UK, this song is great and catchy!br12. Don't be stupid (you know I love you) - The last single-off the album in the UK, but the version released as a single was a more commercial remix! It came at UK No.5 in February 2000.br13. That don't impress me much (UK Dance Mix) - Shania's biggest hit in the UK, came at No.3 in May 1999. The remix included on this album isn't as great as the original.br14. Honey I'm home - Great great great! One of the best songs on the album, it was released in the USA and it came at No.1 on the Billboard's Country Top 20!br15. If you wanna touch her ask - Very lovely song! Never released as a single, but a great track.br16. Rock this country - The last song, one of the best of the album. This Shania's rockest moment! I love it, it's like the end of a concert or tour. It's great! Released as a single in the USA.pSo, if you don't have it, buy it now! You're missing such a huge album! I'm not surprised this charted 11 weeks at No.1 on the UK Albums Top 40 and that it was the biggest-selling album of 1999.
