Amazon.co.uk Review
The fourth album by Primal Scream, IGive Out But Don't Give Up/I caused something of a stir amongst critics and fans alike for being so overtly rock roll after their acid-tinged IScreamadelica/I. With an obvious nod to the blues-rock of the Rolling Stones, Primal Scream explored the roots of their funky psychedelia, resulting in such outstanding tracks as "Jailbird" and "Rocks". Elsewhere, they get a little help from Grand Jester of Funk George Clinton on "Funky Jam" (which does exactly what it says on the tin). Initially written off as a temporary loss of direction for Primal Scream, this album deserves another chance. --ICarina Trimingham/I

5 out of 5 stars The Primals forgotten masterpiece   July 9, 2001

This is an album you really should have in your record collection, there some great pieces of work here. Bobby Gillespie is on top form on this album as well as the rest of the band. It contains raw power and is a treat to listen to.

I bought this album after first buying xtrmntr, vanishing point and screamadelica, and its easily as good as any of them. Mixing soul/funk and rock guitar riffs, this album is genius. Standout tracks are rock, funky jam, free and jailbird.

ok i bought scremadelica 2 years ago, it blew my mind but being a rock fan (incubus, hoobastank, reef etc) i hated the dancey/techno songs. I liked movin on up, higher than the sun etc. On Give Out Primal Scream scrap the dance for a more rock influenced album. This was exactly what I was looking for, songs like rocks, jailbird and sad and blue were exactly what I was hoping for. A superb album with such a diverse collection of influences. Far better than screamadelica.

Last song is called 'Everybody Needs Somebody'. Unfortunate thing is that PS don't seem to bother much with some of the more laid back songs from this album in their live sets anymore. Would love them to try to bring them in a bit more with their newer stuff.

5 out of 5 stars The boys get funky   March 10, 2000
The Scream's 1994 album is underrated by fans who were disappointed by its departure from ecstatic grooves towards a more soul and funk-influenced sound. But judged on its own merits it's a brilliant piece of work, retaining the lightness of touch of Screamadelica and with some particularly good ballads. The sheer range of styles might tell against it to some, but that gets top marks from me - the groovy rock of Jailbird, the soul of Cry Myself Blind, Free and others, the bluesy Sad and Blue, and the George Clinton funky collaborations. If anyone knows the title of the hidden 12th track - one of the best ballads - I'd be grateful if they'd post it here!
