Amazon.co.uk Review
It's one of the cruel ironies of music today that Billy Joel has been relegated to a kind of adult-contemporary hell, where his legacy is measured by soft-rock staples such as "Just the Way You Are", "Piano Man" and "New York State of Mind". To be sure, well-crafted ballads are a part of his legacy but they're hardly the whole story, as this collection of his early and mid-period hits amply demonstrates. From the unbridled biographical boasting of "The Entertainer" and the ambitious storytelling of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" to the careening abandon of "Only the Good Die Young" and the thoughtful social commentary of "Allentown", Joel was as complete an artist as the last three decades have produced. i--Daniel Durchholz/i

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Perfection From The Piano Man!   November 16, 1999

Twenty one of the most amazing songs of the past 3 decades all on one album from one fabulous artist. Billy Joel's Greatest Hits album is one of the very best albums available in music today - it is a collection of songs which stir every emotion inside you and that you know every word of by heart. This CD collection contains a full 21 songs, and at least 15 are ones you know without a doubt. Some of these number one, legendary classics include Piano man, Just the way you are, Movin' out (Anthony's song), Only the good die young, She's always a woman and It's still rock and roll to me. It also includes two of my personal favourites Tell her about it and Uptown girl. I absolutely love this album and have given it as a gift on many occasions - it is a masterpiece!

This collection really is fantastic. I really don't understand why Billy Joel isn't given the critical acclaim he so obviously deserves. His songs have everything. Ballads: Just The Way You Are, Honesty; Excellent melodies: My Life, The Longest Time; Heartfelt lyrics: Captain Jack, Allentown. pHe's a great singer, songwriter and pianist too! Perhaps one day he'll get the respect he's due, but in the mean time buy this collection. It will open your eyes to a true American talent from the last century.

Whenever people talk of Billy Joel normally they will remember him for Uptown Girl his biggest commercial hit - although artistically he has much more to offer. The first few tracks weren't hits but are still credible in every respect, the entertainer is just sheer fun as is Piano man and captain jack pure political poetry. Six tracks from his best album the stranger are on, each one stunning and well crafted especially scenes from an italian restaurant. Disc one is a very well balanced out compilation pDisc two moves on with my personal favourite my life which will get any feet tapping as will the hit singles from the glass houses album it's still rock and rollto me is still catchy and more relevant today then ever. Allentown pressuer and Goodnight saigon are wonderful, although listeners may more be used to just the way you are pop (although very beautiful) It features two new songs which are equally impressivepBuy out of it interest, buy it out of love of good honest music. A well crafted cd which goes to prove that Billy Joel is one of the most important songwriters in the twentieth century, despite hated by critics i think anyones ears will pick up the sound of the piano man. Ladies and Gentlemen....Billy Joel
