3 out of 5 stars 'Original But Dated Funk'   July 16, 2008
Antony May (East Sussex, United Kingdom)
I remember when I first heard Prince Charles The City Beat Bands 'In The Streets' single (from the 'Gang Wars' album). A driving piece of Rick James meets George Clinton meets Osibisa style funk, it was instantly impressive and from that moment on I became a fan. While, 'In The Streets' made little impression in the U.S or U.K, it must have brought the charismatic PC to the attention of some record company 'big wig' because 'Stone Killers' (the bands second album) was released here on Virgin records. First single from the album was the slow rolling hard funk of 'Cash, Cash Money' and the record picked up a lot of action in the club charts, even looking as if it might be a hit at one point. Ironically, it was to be this album that briefly charted instead driven mainly by 'word of mouth' recommendations and the Prince's star never quite managed to shine.
