Amazon.co.uk Review With their fourth-album, Outkast invoke the rebel Southern spirit to full effect. Realising there is something rotten in the state of hip hop, the Atlantan local heroes have staked out their own territory, Stankonia, a Utopian republic representing the best of the Dirty South. As if in tribute to Funkadelic's IAmerica Eats Its Young /I, the album cover finds Dre and Big Boi staring out in front of a black and white stars and stripes. Inside they waste no time in revealing their radical agenda. "Don't everyone like the smell of gasoline?" hollers Andre 3000 on opener "Gasoline Dreams", as he sets fire to the constitution over a scorching electric guitar. The single "B.O.B." (aka "Bombs Over Baghdad") is Outkast's state-of-the-union address, a rousing gothic gospel number that advocates a "power music electric revival" as it approaches the speed of Reprazent's "Who Told You" and the epic feel of "Bohemian Rhapsody". On "Miss Jackson", they assume the role of exemplary southern Gentleman begging forgiveness from their hoochie's mama over a backing with spooky shades of Prince's "When Doves Cry". Elsewhere they eschew tradition (on tracks like "?", "Snappin Trappin" and the B-Real-guesting "Xplosion") to invest their dirty funk with a distinctly avant-garde afro-sheen. Come election day, just sniff this stank to inhale freedom. --IChris Campion/I

Cool and inventive hip-hop February 15, 2001 robjphat@yahoo.com (Nottingham, England) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I love the hip-hop scene, but there are times when I wish for something that breaks away from the clichés and also sounds cool. 'Stankonia' is one of those albums. It is upbeat, fresh, exciting and consistent, which quite remarkable for a album with over 20 tracks. A lot of people will know the huge hit, 'Ms Jackson', but there are plenty more classics to be found. 'B.O.B.' is a stunning combination of hip-hop with drum 'n' bass beats, 'So fresh, so clean' is smooth and seductive, 'Gasoline dreams' is a heavy hip-hop anthem and 'Gangsta.....' and 'x-plosion' are a couple more addictive tracks which really creep up on you after a couple of listens. The beauty of this album is that you are never quite sure what the next track will be like, yet the songs possess so much style and charm, that you find yourself loving every track regardless. This is hip-hop at it's most innovative and creative.
Revolutionary Hip-Hop March 5, 2001 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This album is one of the most revolutionary hip-hop albums. Outkast are going out to try and expand hip-hop and this album is how they are doing it. It has a great mix of quite melodic stuff mixed in with the harder, quicker stuff. I would definately recomend this album as it is a gateway for the future. Unfortunately, I believe that Outkast are ahead of their time and that the commercial hip-hop market will not really appreciate it. This album will not get where it should.
A CD for R'n'B fans with high expectations July 31, 2001 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Outkast deserve many medals for this CD. Toilet Tisha is chilled out electric Rn'B at its best, while the epic B.O.B energises even the most lethargic slobs. A quirky, zesty CD which is definitely a must.

the only way this can't 5 stars is if you only compare it with other Outkast albums. It may not be the best Outkast but its still 5/5 relative to all other music.
The Best Yet May 16, 2001 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Forget miss jackson look no further than toilet tisha, a song that reaks of classic prince and stankonia the title track to realise this is no ordinary hip hop group. Outkast are by far the best thing to happen to rap in years, freaky lyrics and super cool beats make this one on the best albums i have ever heard!!
