Amazon.co.uk Review
Amidst the denizens of fabricated boy bands, Westlife's debut comes as an unexpected gem. With a strong management team behind them--courtesy of Boyzone's own Ronan Keating--Westlife became the first Irish boy band to top the charts with their first three singles. "Swear it Again", the album's opener, is reminiscent of 1970s American balladeers Chicago, but their weak cover of Abba's "I Have A Dream" is a welcome omission. Instead, we're treated to a fantastic reworking of funk metal outfit Extreme's "More Than Words"; singer Bryan's plaintive vocal make it a superb choice. With producers Steve Mac and Pete Waterman in charge, as well as perfect string arrangements and surprisingly thoughtful lyrics, iWestlife/i puts these boys in place to inherit Boyzone's pop crown. i--Shanthi Sivanesan/i

5 out of 5 stars A stunning debut!   July 16, 2003

Westlife are known all over the world as being a slow band, who sing nothing but ballads. Well, they've released a couple of uptempos here and there, like "World of our own" and "When you're looking like that", but if you preferred them in their early era then this album is for you!pThe massive no. 1 singles "Swear it again", "If I let you go", "Flying without wings", "Fool again" and "Seasons in the sun" are all included on this fantastic alb, as well as a whopping 12 new tracks! Every song is superb - there are no time wasting filler choons here, which is a big plus for any album. Even though every new track is full of slushiness too, there are different types of ballad included here. There are huge, tear-jerking, powerful ones like "I don't wanna fight", "Moments" and "We are one", there are slightly more toe-tapping ones with cool bass guitar riffs in the background, like "Miss you", "More than words", "What I want is what I've got", "I need you" and "Can't lose what you never had", and there are ones full of Irish instruments that sound somehow happy, like "Change the world", "No no", "Open your heart" and "Try again".pParticular songs to listen out for are "More than words"; there are amazing harmonies in this track and the boys' fab voices compliment each other perfectly, "I need you", because it sounds reeeeeeeally familiar to me and I can't work out where I've heard it before, and "Open your heart"; the guys' soft Irish accents really come through when they sing the title in the chorus!pSo if you adore songs that make you want to cry with sadness after you've heard them, and love swooning over fantastic male voices, Westlife's brilliant debut album is a must. If you like ballads but also like hearing some mid-tempo or upbeat pop for some variety, you should check out Westlife's other albs "Coast to coast" or "World of our own". If you absolutely detest ballads then don't even consider buying this, but it would make an ideal birthday present for your mum!

For all you people who are thinking of buying this don't think just do it. Its the best album I have ever heard and I know that the guys are just going to get better and better. I love all the songs on this album and have listened to it a lot of times. I think soon whenever you say 'boybands' every one is just going to think of Westlife cause they're gonna be massive.pAnd just to comment on Marks amazing preformance, no matter what anyone will say in the furture - that guys got talent! He delivers a wonderful performance especially on 'Flying without Wings' and is one of the strongest voices I have ever heard.pAll in all - this is the best, well done to them.

5 out of 5 stars I thought this CD was fab!   June 17, 2001

This CD was great! I really liked the songs 'Swear it again' 'Flying without wings' 'No no' 'A fool again' 'What I want is what I've got' and many many more! Westlife really inspired me with this album because it's all dance music and only a couple of slow songs. That's what I like about westlife, they don't have screaming air guitars in the backround but it's not like just the piano playing. It's right in the middle and that's why I like it. westlife isn't a group that everyone will like. Most people like plain out rock and that is not westlife the least bit. But I don't like flat out rock and I'm sticking with westlife. I enjoy their music and I hope they have a fun time making it.br /br /
