Amazon.co.uk Review
To judge by the impassioned responses to her debut album iVoice Of An Angel/i, Charlotte Church has already set extraordinary expectations for any follow-up. After all, the vocal phenomenon from Cardiff took up a place in IThe Guinness Book of Records/I as the youngest artist ever--at the tender age of 12--to have an album attaining No. 1 status on the classical charts. This self-titled second release will continue to delight the highly gifted singer's legions of fans, and also contains some surprises for them. Church here tries out classical repertory with Puccini's "O mio babbino caro" and the "Jewel Song"--her pure and high-flying voice showing an amazing agility. There is great warmth in a couple of sacred songs, as well as the traditional Irish "She Moved Through the Fair". Church's vocal colour--almost like a boy soprano at times--brings something unique to Gershwin's "Summertime", while the first track--"Just Wave Hello"--seems destined to become part of the music you can't avoid associating with the turn of the millennium. --ISarah Chin/I

5 out of 5 stars Charlotte Church, THE voice for '2001   March 22, 2001

If Classical fans are withering of this talent, then their comments are worthless!-Considering their fawning grovelling remarks over such awful SCREECHING HARPIES as Callas' endless grating and mundane Arpeggios. At least Charlotte can sing! I shall remain a devoted fan

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Second Album   January 12, 2000

Perhaps the biggest new musical success of 1999, Charlotte Church follows her platinum-selling "Voice Of An Angel" with an even better second album. Still the playful child on "La pastorella" and giddy girl with "Voi che sapete", but increasingly mature with "O mio babbino caro" and "Lascia ch'io pianga", the world's most famous 13-year-old shines throughout. One particular highlight is "Men of Harlech", which she begins slowly as a Welsh ballad but ends with sheer, raw vocal power. Her critics, those musical puritans who prefer a slavish adherence to 'technical correctness', just don't get it. Charlotte Church isn't an opera singer - not yet, anyway - nor has she ever claimed to be one. She is an extraordinary talent who performs a mixed bag of folk songs, hymns, and of course some arias, although without all the usual elitist trappings. What we have is a young artist at a very early stage in her career. And, as she grows and improves, we can grow in our appreciation of her and her music. If you get the chance to see her in concert, by all means do so...just leave the tuxedo at home.

5 out of 5 stars A new confidence developing   October 12, 2000

A hear a new confidence developing in this album. There is something of the popular in Just Wave Hello and for the Classical fan in the Italian and french and for the folkie soul too. All sung with a brightness and confidence engendered, no doubt, from the success of theVoice of an Angel album.pSome say that Charlottes voice is not as good as some youngsters of her age. This may be true. But, it takes a very special person and talent to stand in front of T.V. cameras and produce the goods in a live auditorium and record in front of a male voice choir and full orchestra. Your family must be oozing with pride for you Charlotte.pBut where does she go from here? After her new album Dream A Dream out in October 2000, with a selection of Christmas songs, where does this young talent go? Are we to have more albums exploring poular classics are are we to get some depth. I see the difficulty in that Charlotte has almost had her career too early and she may be too young for Stage opera and must stay in the `popular appeal` arena for some time. Personally, if she continues to produce good quality music, as she is doing, I shall continue to buy her CD`s and I will watch her career with great interest - A star in the making - if she has the inclination to continue and the dedication to improve. Keep it up Charlotte we are right behind you.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive   November 12, 1999

Aside from the crass commercialism attending the Just Wave Hello millennium pseudo-anthem, Charlotte Church's newest work is a lovely and luminous CD laced with glimpses of what will someday be an impossibly beautiful soprano voice. Setting aside, as well, her still-maturing technique, one is struck by the sheer brilliance of her basic sound. In Songs My Mother Taught Me I defy anyone to find a prettier voice or a more heartfelt passion. Her La Pastorella is both playful and powerful. Jewel Song is astonishing for anyone under 25 to get even half-way right, yet Charlotte, at 13, hits it very close. There is, however, one very loud mistake on this CD: the Puccini aria is patently premature; an embarrassment. Her handlers should have given her a few more years for that one. Gaffes aside, a glorious album to enjoy and share.

5 out of 5 stars Will grow on you   December 10, 1999

I don't recommend this for musicologists, opera buffs, fine arts critics, etc.; their tastes will be offended by the freshness and naivete of this lovely little singer. If you're open to a voice that sounds like a Stradivarius on its way to being played well, then give it a listen. She does full justice (in her own little way) to O mio babbino caro. You'll be surprised when you hear it. Jerusalem is uncannily pretty. Her Men of Harlech is on the edge of overpowering. She's come a long way since last year's Ave Maria and Pie Jesu which were the highpoints of Voice of an Angel.
