Amazon.co.uk Review Shania Twain comes full circle on IThe Woman In Me/I, co-writing 11 out of 12 songs [the others are remixes and a CD-ROM video] and proving that she can do more than sing. Once again she crosses over into pop/rock territory with this multi-platinum affair, bringing legions of new fans into the country camp. Peppered with hits such as "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" and "Any Man of Mine", this album features crisp and clear vocals and country-flavored pop arrangements. Husband and co-writer "Mutt" Lange, known for his production work with hard hitters Def Leppard, has produced a fresh sound for country, enhancing the traditional with a more gritty, gutsy sound; even the more delicate tunes resemble those power-pop tunes from the 1980s. iWoman in Me/i is music for all occasions: danceable, romantic and powerful. Surprisingly Great! March 5, 2004 Luciano (Buenos Aires, Argentina) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is really great! Is the first country album I've ever owned and I love it! When I bought it back in 2001 I didn't know what to expect, I just thought it would contain a lot of country crap and cheesyness, but it turned to be an excellent country ballads album with a few rock moments.brMy favourite songs on the album are "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here!", "Any Man Of Mine", "No One Needs To Know" and "God Bless The Child".brThe album sold amazingly great in the USA and won a lot of Grammys in 1996. In the UK it was re-issued in 2000 and the come-from-nowhere success it had is unexplainable, it reached No.9 in the Official UK Top 40 Albums.brBuy it, because it's great, you won't be disappointed!
'Woman in me'- simply the best! March 9, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Having heard Shania's other albums- Come on Over and Up!, I felt a curiousity to listen to the 'Woman in me', the songs of which she has sung in many concerts. This Audio CD definitely has a value for money!p The play track consists of 12 songs including hits like 'Home ain't where his heart is (anymore);, 'Any man of mine', 'Whose bed have your boots been under', 'If you are not in it for love', 'God Bless the child' etc. The songs are absolutely great, with great instrumental accompaniments. There are 4 bonus tracks, including a Quicktime video of 'God Bless the child'. The sound and picture quality are great!pProduced by Mutt Lange, and written by Twain Lange, this CD is definitely an excellent choice for those who want to listen to great music!
A review of an old friend!! February 13, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I first bought this album in 1996 when Shania Twain was a complete unknown in this country and had the original packaging with the impossibly gorgeous picture of Shania on the front (far nicer than the re-release)! For me, it was love at first listen!! pI guess now that she has taken the world by storm and is certainly a household name over here, it is evitable that comparisons are made between this album and Come On Over. Whereas I love the latter recording, which is packed with sassy, catchy, feel-good tunes, I really think that it lacks the sincerity and sophistication of Woman In Me! pThe humour carries through to Come On Over taking over where songs like Whose Bed... and Any Man... left off but I think what's missing are those really classy, heart wrenching songs in abundance here. Is There Life After Love?, Home Ain't Where His Heart Is and Leaving Is The Only Way Out to name just three; the first of which has, to my mind, the one of the best middle eights recorded! I think only You've Got A Way With Me on Come On Over can stand shoulder to shoulder with the above three.pOf course Woman In Me is a whole lot more Country orientated than Come On Over, which still had to have much of the twang taken out of the 1997 recording to make it palatable to a Worldwide audience. But if Shania has to be categorised as anything, I'm sure she would agree that she is a Country Artist, first and foremost!pAs a package, it's a wonderful album, taking it's listener over the whole emotional spectrum from the first sparks of unspoken love through to the heartbreak of trying to come to terms with when it all goes wrong.pIf I have one light-hearted criticism of the album it is that the person who decided on the titles for the songs could have been a little more sparing with the parentheses!!pIn the five years I have owned this album I have never felt my affection for it wane and I can't recommend it more highly!!
From Country Gal to Diva July 26, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
From the opening bars of Home aint where the Heart is, it is clear that this was a massive leap forward from Shania's self-titled first album. Whilst the underlying feel is pure country, the song's content and chorus showed a new maturity. It is clear that the input of Mutt Lange was having positive results. This maturity and feeling carries forward in some great ballads such as Raining on Our Love and the sublime Woman in Me. The roots of country are still adhered to in foot stomping numbers such as Whos bed has your boots been under and Any Man of Mine, but there is a clear move towards more crossover tracks suck as the excellent Not in it for Love. European fans have the blessing of 4 extra tracks including the excellent live medley of Love Songs that follow the charming No one Needs to Know.pHindsight is one a blessing when reviewing a record you love, and whilst Come on Over has more commercial hits, Woman in Me has more charm and deeper set feelings. Perhaps the ballads do not reach the heights of From This moment, but they just seem more personal. This is an album that not only suggest better things to come, it is also the album that establishes Shania as one of the true Divas of the 21st Century
Brilliant contemporary country January 9, 2004 Peter Durward Harris (Leicester England) 12 out of 16 found this review helpful
Following the failure of her major label debut album, Shania opted for a different sound for this follow-up album. Matt Lange became her producer. They each wrote one song alone and co-wrote the others together. The album has a sound that appeals to a lot of people who don't normally like country music, yet this is still a country album at heart and there are at least a couple of songs here that would sit comfortably on a traditional country album, as I will explain.pThere are several high quality ballads, particularly Home ain't where his heart is anymore (the story of love gone sour after several happy years) and the heartfelt title track. Nevertheless, the tracks that I like best are the two up-tempo songs that set Shania on the road to superstardom - Any man of mine (in which Shania explains exactly what she expects of her man, but she sings it in a fun way so you know she's not quite as demanding as she at first seems) and Who's bed have your boots been under (another fun song, this time questioning the faithfulness of her man), both of which remind me of the kind of song that Loretta Lynn was so good at in the late sixties and early seventies. Indeed, the song that follows those two, If you're not in it for love I'm outta here (doubting the motives of a potential suitor), would also have suited Loretta in her prime.pThere are, of course, many other fine songs on this album, which sold well over ten million copies in America. It was also my first Shania album although the British public generally didn't take much notice of her until the release of Come on over - and even then, after it had been remixed for the European market.pI have the original version of the album - this edition features extra re-mixes and a CD-ROM at no extra cost.pMy favorite Shania album is her flop (untitled) debut album, but this one and Come on over are both masterpieces in their own ways. These three albums are very different from each other and you certainly need eclectic musical tastes to enjoy all three.
