Amazon.co.uk Review
So this is where it all began. This is where Noel Gallagher first realised his vision of a band that matched the swagger of the Stone Roses to the harmonic thrill of the Beatles. It is difficult to resist this album, despite the obvious flaws. (It plods. The production is too heavy-handed. "Shakermaker" borrows its melody from a soft drink commercial.) There is such a passion, such self-belief in these tracks, such a refusal to be overwhelmed by the odds. "Cigarettes And Alcohol" virtually defined a generation. "Supersonic" still sends a pure adrenaline rush through the listener, despite the cack-handed lyrics. "Live Forever", meanwhile, is simply fantastic--still Oasis's finest moment. Singles aside, there are so many other gems to discover; from the classy "Up In The Sky" to the acoustic ballad "Married With Children" to the chirpy "Digsy's Diner". On this classic album--and its even finer follow-up I(What's The Story) Morning Glory/I--Oasis still had a real naiveté to their sound, one that they subsequently lost. --IEverett True/I

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST BRIT-POP ALBUMS EVER!   February 9, 2004

I have been a fan of oasis for a long time and this is definately one on their best records to date. This was the album that started the Brit rock period in the mid 90's. Although Musically it may not be up to the standard of 'Whats the story morning glory' which in my view is still oasis best work, definately maybe is still a great album to be reckoned with. With classic singles like 'live forever' and 'supersonic' this is a brilliant album which started the amazing band that is oasis. Liam's lyrics are amazing as is Noel's songwriting. Another masterpiece from the gallagher brothers!

5 out of 5 stars The best debut album ever?   July 19, 2004

It is hard to believe that Definitely Maybe could be anyone's debut album when one considers the greatness and relevance of almost all of the songs. From the classic opener of 'Rock N Roll Star' to the elegant 'Live Forever', from the hard rock of 'Columbia' to the acoustic delight that is 'Married With Children', Definitely Maybe has something for everyone.pTaken as one complete 50 minute album, all tracks effortlessly create pictures in the listener's mind of what life was like back in the early 1990s in John Major's Tory Government. 'Cigarettes And Alcohol' is perhaps the defining moment in Oasis' fledgling career: if Noel could write something that good at such a relatively young [and inexperienced] age then it was a joy to imagine what kind of songs he could writing in 10 years time...pUnfortunately, Noel has since lost his creative edge but these timeless tunes on Defintely Maybe will be around ever and with the exception of 'Digsys Dinner' are rightly hailed as classics!

5 out of 5 stars The Album of the nineties!   December 21, 1999

Definitely Maybe is the album that kicked it all off. With interest in guitar music fading by the mid-90s there was a need for something big to come along and shake things up. It was the album that started a thousand bands playing in their garages. It was the album that taught the decades youth what good music sounded like.pThe album was criticised at the time for being a Beatles-soundalike. Oasis played up to it by constantly sourcing the fab four as their major influence, and the critics pounced. The Beatles are without a doubt one of the best bands of all-time but Definitely Maybe is one of musics classic recordings. There is not a track on it that would look out of place on a Beatles LP and a few would have made it to the red or blue albums.pIt opens with the dirty guitar intro of 'Rock'n'Roll Star' shaking the speakers - and this is a record to play loud. As the drums kick in you find yourself strolling around an imaginary stage, finally reaching for the mic as Liam blurts out I lived my life in the city. This is a song that makes everyone believe they can rule the world - the ultimate curtains-closed air-microphone rock-out.p'Shakermaker' is probably the weakest song on the album but even that was worthy of release as the band's second single. Think 'I'd Like to teach the World to Sing' performed by the Sex Pistols.pAnd this brings us to 'Live Forever'. Noel's finest lyrics, Liam's finest vocal and the finest song of the decade. Maybe I will never be / All the things that I want to be / Now is not the time to cry / Nows the time to find out why. It doesn't get better than this.p'Up in the sky' is classic Oasis rock, 'Columbia' an overpowering filthy guitar track which has to be played loud. These lead to 'Supersonic' the incredible debut single with slightly suspect lyrics and 'Bring it on down', the albums most indie track.pThe TRex driven 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' is one of the anthems of the Britpop generation. The album swaggers with a couldn't give a f**k attitude and this is it's crescendo.p'Digsy's Dinner' is a funny, bouncy song and 'Slide Away' is mysteriously sexy; just lie back and let the guitars wash over you. 'Married with Children' is an acoustic gem, ideal for putting on after your girlfriend has left you. It ends the album and leaves you feeling somewhat smug.pAs you can probably tell, I'm an Oasis fan. This album is the reason why. For anyone who believes they have a comprehensive record collection of the 90s, this CD is a must. If you were there at Knebworth or Maine Road you don't need persuading. If you listen to British music in 1994/5 you ought to know. If you are a living breathing human being who likes glorious melodies, powerful vocals and great rhythms, then you need this album. It was Britpop. It is the album of the nineties.

5 out of 5 stars A rock n roll classic, a bench mark for all debut albums.   November 30, 2000

It so hard to sum this album up in such a short space. From the screeching opening bars of Rock n Roll Star right through until the mellow ending of Married With Children this album show cases Noel Gallaghers brillance as a song writer. Songs like Live Forever and Cigarettes And Alcohol still sound as good today as ever and show us just how bad music has become lately. The stand out moment for me though is Supersonic, sure the lyrics aren't deep and meaningful or make much sense even but that opening drum beat, that intro guitar, that brilliant double tracked guitar solo. Quite simply, in my view, the best song Oasis have recorded. What do you mean you don't already own this album? Buy it now and what it is to love rock n roll!

5 out of 5 stars Where it all began!   February 1, 2004

1994, the British music industry still recovering from a post-Nirvana Grunge scene, and no top quality bands on the scene since the Stone Roses and Queen. With dance, pop and various other trashy forms of music becoming more and more popular, 5 working class mancunians bring out a single called Supersonic. It makes 31st in the charts, but more importantly is now regarded as a classic, and brings to public attention the band of the 90's, namely Oasis. Definitley Maybe soon followed, and with Liam's vocals, coupled with Noel's fantastic songwriting and a wall of sound behind it gives us 11 tracks that live long in the memory and create the best debut album for a long time!pTrack List:p1) Rock n Roll Star - If ever there's one song that sums up Oasis it's this one. Absolutely quality tune, the perfect opening to any debut album and a great live track.p2) Shakermaker - Probably one of the weaker tracks on the album, but still manages to sound good even a decade on as Noel borrows heavily but still manages to produce a recognisable Oasis tune.p3) Live Forever - What can I say about this tune that hasn't already been said? Easily the best track by the best band of the 90's and a song everyone should hear. Awesome song and one of the best ever made in my opinion.p4) Up in the Sky - Very underrated rocky track from this album. The lyrics mean little but this fast paced and enjoyable track is a welcome addition to any album.p5) Columbia - Another great live track and easily recognisable as a quality rock n roll track with Liam and Noel at their best.p6) Supersonic - Quality rock n roll track, showing to the world the band Oasis were destined to become. Some great lyrics and an absolutely fantastic song.p7) Bring it on Down - One of the most underrated songs from the album, quality track again.p8) Cigarettes n Alcohol - Another classic and instantly recognisable Oasis tune. Borrows the riff completely, but still manages to sound great and if one track sums up the Britpop attitude in this country then here it is!p9) Digsys Dinner - Irrelevant but still an enjoyable tune. The lyrics are at times bordering on ludicrous, but it's still a top song and deserving of a place on this quality debut.p10) Slide Away - One of the best songs on the album and ranks alongside Wonderwall and Don't Look Back in Anger as one of the bands best power ballads with Liam at his most emotional in a classic song.p11) Married with Children - Final song of the album and a great acoustic song perfect to wrap up the finest of debuts!pIf you haven't bought this one then go and get it and transfer yourself back to 1994, the birth of Britpop and one of our countries finest ever bands at their very best!
