Amazon.co.uk Review
Spice Girl, Melanie B's debut, IHot/I acknowledges the warped, sexy, funky grooves of RB pop through imitation. Unlike her contemporaries, Destiny's Child, Mel's voice is sadly devoid of soul and range. Owing to these limitations, IHot/I sounds like a producer's album rather than Mel's chance to shine without the others. Sisqo, long-time Janet Jackson collaborators, Jam Lewis and Teddy Riley supply the grooves, Mel offers her loud and upfront personality. Sensibly Mel has chosen to exclude her cover of Cameo's "Word Up" and this decision goes in her favour. Although her collaboration with Missy Elliott, "I Want You Back", is there in all its dark and sexy neo-disco glory, it's not indicative of the album. The ace two-step flavoured "Step Inside" proves that up-tempo pop is her forte but boy, does she begin to let the side down. As IHot/I is partly about the break-up of her marriage, Melanie indulges in lots of melancholic spoken-word interludes circa Janet Jackson's IControl/I. It's not very good, mainly because her yearning is so ludicrously overblown. This weakness for amateur dramatics also applies to Mel's sordid attempt to be sexy on "Feel Me Down". But what works is pretty fab. She blows in with "Feel So Good", an irresistible slice of radio-friendly sunshine pop, follows that with the funky "Tell Me" and manages to disarm us with "Lullaby", a lovely, folky ballad. --IMaxine Kabuubi/I

Mel B's three solo singles have all rocked so I had high expectations of the album. I wasn't disappointed. Things kick off with Feels So Good which is just a really nice love song, and then there's Tell Me, which is the amazing current single. Lullaby is a cute little ballad about Phoenix which is followed by Step Inside, my favourite song which is a really cool, Destiny's Child 2-stepper. Every song is great and the production is excellent all the way through thanks to Sisqo, Fred and Rodney Jerkins, Missy Elliott, and many other talented producers. At the end of the CD, there is I Want You Back with Missy, which is very dark and groovy, Pack Your Sh*t which is really angry and excellent, and to finish a sleazy song called Feel Me Now. This whole album is great and Mel's voice and personality shine. It hasn't been out of my stereo since I bought it. The best RnB album of the year so far.

If I knew that this album is this good, I'd had bought it earlier. Maybe I would have if I've known that she worked with Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Missy Elliott, Fred Jerkins, LaShawn Daniels and Teddy Riley (each of them is a big name enough to make me buy a CD). I just can't pick which song is the best, 'cause they're equally good, maybe except for Feel Me Now, which tries to be sexy, but it's boring (although if you want to fell asleep, I can recommend it), I guess they gave it to her after Janet Jackson rejected it, but the rest of the album is very good. I especially like "Tell Me" with its cool rhythm and cool lyrics, and "I Believe" with its uncredited sampling of the Supremes' "Someday We'll Be Together" (say it, say it, say it again). It's a good album and makes me wanna more, so I guess I'll start looking for the singles while I'm waiting for Melanie's second solo album.

5 out of 5 stars One hot album!   November 11, 2000

Deemed by many as the 'Jimmy Gulzar bashing album', Hot, Spice Girl, Melanie B's first solo record does indeed see Brown getting rather feisty at times, but of the five tracks she co-wrote, only one song, the single 'Tell Me' talks of Gulzar ('and all you loved was Mel B's money'). The album is defined by the special guests and producers including former BLACKstreet members Teddy Riley and Eric Williams, Missy Elliott, Sisqo, Jimmy Jam Terry Lewis, Rodney Jerkins and bizarrely, Mel's actor boyfriend Max Beesely. However, vocally Mel puts in a all round good performance, and the last track 'Feel Me Now' proves what a deep sexy voice she has - phwoar! 'Lullaby', is the most honest and touching moment on the album, a truely beautiful song written by Mel for her 2 year old daughter, Phoenix Chi. The song, enough to reduce even the most heavy hearted listeners to tears ('..but I know this love is unconditional, deep inside you're my living joy'). Woth buying for the cover sleeve alone, but there's tons of top tracks to satisfy your pop tastebuds. Pure quality RB. pBest Song: Hell No Worst Song: I Believe

5 out of 5 stars Melanie B's CD is HOT!   September 28, 2000

Melanie B is one of the best RB artists, she doesn't sound British at all! She sounds a but like an american! She has a great voice, and the music is completely different from what you hear today. Tell Me is the best song on the whole CD. It talks about her break-up with her husband, and she tells us everything, even though the Parental Advisory sticker, it sounds great!

Congratulations to Mel B on an excellent album. I got it as a gift and she's definitely got the R'n'B thing going on! Though she sings about her heart break, the songs are really enjoyable. She is obviously talented and I wish her the best of luck with the album.
