Amazon.co.uk Review Fatboy Slim has come a long way since his debut album, iBetter Living Through Chemistry/i, saw him bring big beat to the masses. His first offering of the new millennium, iHalfway Between the Gutter and the Stars/i was his most ambitious project to date. Married life and impending fatherhood seemed to have made the original party animal grow up, and this was reflected in the new and improved sound--the banging floor-fillers being replaced by a more refined and adult sound, as he teamed up with Bootsy Collins and Macy Gray to bring a fantastic blend of funk and soul to the dance floor. His collaborations with Macy Gray are two of the standout tracks--"Love Life" and "Demons" effortlessly combine funky fluid beats and Macy's distinctive vocals with fantastic results. Jim Morrison even pops up, providing the haunting looped sample for the first single to be taken from the album--"Sunset (Bird of Prey)". Purist fans of his previous output won't be disappointed by his change of direction, as tracks like "Ya Mama" and "Mad Flava" are instantly recognisable as vintage Fatboy Slim--big of beats and samples. The sound of a man growing old disgracefully. --iHelen Marquis/i

Breathtaking November 19, 2000 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
You'll either love this album or you'll hate it. The only reason people hate it is because it is less commercial than his previous effort. Don't expect the hyper-style dance featured in You've Come a long way, baby. Instead expect something darker and more gospel influenced. This album is amazing. From the soulful beginning to the heavenly end, this is pure perfection. The best songs are the Macy Gray collaborations (Demons, Love life) the chemical-brothers esque Ya Mama and the horribly catchy Weapon of Choice. This hasn't left my CD player since I got it. Undoubtably the album of the year
Norman Cooks back better than ever, with a brand new sound. October 31, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Halfway Between the Gutter And The Stars is certainly very different in comparison to You've Come a long way baby, but at the same time its not. This album is more melodic, and more soothing, and really captures ones emotions let it be danceing or resting. Another masterpiece has slapped us accross the face, it may different from Norman's old sounds, but it certainly is just as good. From the ravish booming bass of Star 69, to the catchy booty bounceing Weapon of choice, and The soothing Talking bout my Baby Fatboyslim nows how to work it. Hes back and better then ever.
Another Masterpiece!! November 8, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What is wrong with this guy? Can't he produce a rubbish song?! This is one of the most addictive collections of music ever.pThe songs are much harder and sharper, but not so bassy as You've Come A Long Way Baby. With the deep, soulful feeling as well, this album is another must-have for your collection.pPersonally, I don't think it's as easy to get into as his previous album, and it's more of an aquired taste. However, the variety of styles and moods are bound to be a crowd-pleaser and the album has something for everyone. An absolute get-now.pAnother thing, only halfway? Fatboy's more like 95% of the way to the stars. His next album...at this rate it's going to be something VERY special...
The way Dance Music SHOULD be going! November 11, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Forget UK garage, this is what the future of Dance Music should be!pFrom the soulful grooves of Talkin About My Baby to the stonkingly big beats of Retox this album has it all. As for coupling Norman Cook's talents with the vocals of Macy Gray - pure genius. pProudly wearing its funk and disco origins on its sleeves this is an album that learns from the past and gives it a modern twist.pIt'll build you up high and let you down gently. All in less than 70 minutes! Quite simply this is Fantastic!
THIS GUYS WITHIN REACH OF THE STARS NOW! October 12, 2000 Fatboys back and better than ever, its not old skool fatboy but it shows how he has progressed with his music in the last few years! Fav Tune is Sunset (bird of prey) for jims haunting voice and the amazing break it has, next has to be Thinkin bout ma baby which is funked up gospel with deep heavy grooves which does work, Star69 is a noisey agressive tune which you will be humming all day after you`ve heard it!pNorman its true its true YOU`VE COME A LONG WAY BABY!
