Amazon.co.uk Review
Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One released this single disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to long-time Fabs faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s and beyond. But more than merely a trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find people to argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), I1/I is also a quick sketch of a remarkable seven-year musical evolution, one that stretches from the neo-skiffle of "Love Me Do" through a remarkable synthesis of RB, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley, gospel, country and classical that still defies efforts to effectively deconstruct it. --IJerry McCulley/I

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Fabs?   October 22, 2000

All the Beatles No.1s from Love Me Do to The Long Winding Road. You can't grumble about the quality of the songs or value for money - a single CD (and 79+ mins) with more tracks than the double Red album (1962-66).I just wonder what the motivation is behind this release. Maybe it's simply to provide a single disc career overview of the greatest pop band in history to those who don't want to invest in 2 double CDs. There will no doubt be those that will complain that no Beatles hits package is complete without Strawberry Fields Forever. But this is a compilation of all of the Beatles' US and UK No.1 hits and unfortunately that song only reached No.2 in the UK. The Billboard Hot 100 in the US is compiled from a combination of sales and airplay, and though Penny Lane (the double A flip-side) reached No.1, Strawberry Fields only got enough radio play to reach No.8. I suppose they could have used a different criterion to select their greatest hits, but with so many hits to choose from they couldn't help but exclude some favourites (Please Please Me, Twist Shout, In My Life, and there is not a single song from from Sgt. Peppers). Still, this is the first time that such classics as She Loves You, Yesterday, Help!, Hey Jude, Get Back and Let It Be have all appeared on the same album. So if you don't own a Beatles album, this is the place to start, and it makes a great gift for anyone who hasn't updated their scratched vinyl records.

5 out of 5 stars a work of genius...   October 11, 2005

well i would never have dreamed when i first heard the beatles in 1962 at the tender age of 9 that i would still be listening to them today, and they sound just as fresh and exciting to me as they did then! in those days everything was literally "flavour of the month". i'm pleased the younger generations of music fans appreciate these simple works of genius still too. i don't know anyone who doesn't like beatles music, proving good things cut across all barriers. i expect they'll still be playing beatles music in 500 years time! this album is a great clean collection of songs guaranteed to hook the uninitiated into a lifetime appreciation of beatles music. i must have heard these a thousand times and still find them refreshing. definitely a must have.

5 out of 5 stars An essential puchase for any vinyl lover!   December 7, 2000

This is a fantastic greatest hits compilation, and a superb intro to the music of the Beatles - at last we get all the UK and US No.1 hits on one double LP. And this is a far better compilation that the awful 20 Greatest Hits LP issued back in 1982, which had different tracks included on the US and UK versions. Having all the US and UK No 1 hits on a double LP is a superb idea! The remastered sound quality of the songs is stunning. I own this LP on CD too and, even though it's mastered from a digital source, I feel the vinyl does actually sound better. Play it on a decent hi-fi system and it really gives the CD version a run for its money. Also, the packaging of this double LP is superb, with a giant poster and 4 prints a la White Album. The vinyl is very thick (feels almost like 180g) and flat too. Just shows you what these record companies can actually do with vinyl when they try! This lavish double LP package is an absolute must-have for any Beatles fan and any vinyl fan for that matter. As for the music itself it's great of course although this album does fall some way short of painting the complete picture. The Beatles revolutionised the whole popular music scene and took it in a new direction with ground-breaking recordings like Revolver and Sgt Pepper. To appreciate the Beatles fully you need to check out their albums, especially their work from 1965's Rubber Soul onwards. But let's not forget, these guys were THE masters of great pop melodies and here is the proof, if ever any was needed. Just try NOT to sing along to this stuff. I'm 31 and a life-long fan of the Fabs since I was 10. My children will listen to this music, and their children, and their children. As their producer George Martin once said, the Beatles were the classical music of their times. So, here for your listening pleasure 27 of the finest pop songs ever written. Never equalled and certainly never bettered. If you need any more convincing to buy this LP, then you really do need HELP!

5 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack of my childhood   February 24, 2003

My first memory of the Beatles is when I was five and "She Loves You" blared from the six foot cube of mahoganised monstrosity my dad called a "radiogram". It was quite a shock to a kid brought up on "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "The Little Drummer Boy" pListening to this album is like charting my childhood. Although I was too young in '67 to appreciate the finer naunces of hippydom (if there were any), I knew even then that the fab four were more than just a pop band, and I can vividly remember seeing them perform for the last time on the London rooftops. pWho knows what they might have gone on to do if they hadn't split up. But then again, maybe it is best that they did, and left us with this perfect collection of pop gems. pThis is how a boy band should be. These guys didn't need to be manufactured, they didn't need anybody to tell them how to perform, and they didn't need anyone else to write their songs for them. From Lennon's snarl, McCartney's way with a melody, Harrisons' fluid guitar and Ringo's solid driving force, the combination formed a band that worked so well together that they might never be bettered.br brMy musical tastes may have changed since then, but if you were born before 1965, these songs will bring a warm wash of nostalgia that'll make you forget the subsequent fates of the band members....for a while at least.

This is an absolutely fantastic album just buy it! I'm only 15 and an a total beatles maniac. What they did in that space of time was amazing 27 NO.1S!!! The thing is this ISN'T there best album! Theyve done that many songs that you can't really do a best hits album for them. Who are the other all time GREATS? The rolling stones, the who, nirvana, oasis and a few others, but if you were asked to make a greatest hits album for them there would be songs that you would DEFINATLY put on. But try and do that for the beatles and it would be almost impossible to do. If your reading this and disagreeing then youve not heard ALL off there stuff over and over and read every thing about them. yes i'll admit im a beatles freak but i cant help being like that they've made me like that and if thats not a sign of a great band i dont know what is. Anyway this is all there no.1s they could have made over half of there songs no1 but didnt release a lot of them. If youve noy got this album GET IT. Get all of the beatles work and ill tell you youl definatly not regret it and thats a guarente. CLASS is written all over this so BUY IT! go on what u waitin for?!
